Natural spatial variability of algal endosymbiont density in the coral Acropora globiceps : a small- scale approach along environmental gradients around Moorea ( French Polynesia)

    No full text
This study provides a baseline describing natural small scale variability of Symbiodinium density in the sentinel coral Acropora globiceps during the summer, under non-bleaching conditions. Spatial scales investigated range from the colony scale (1-10cm, i.e. among branches of the same colony) to the reef scale (1-10km, i.e. among stations distributed over several locations and depths), at Moorea Island, French Polynesia. The coral-Symbiodinium symbiosis is a key process in scleractinian coral physiology, and Symbiodinium density provides an easy-to-measure and inexpensive biomarker of this symbiosis health. Spatial variability of three major environmental factors: light intensity, sedimentation and water motion was also assessed to evaluate their potential link with Symbiodinium density. Density of Symbiodinium did not significantly differ within colonies or among colonies within a station. However, a marked depth gradient was observed, showing increasing density with increasing depth and decreasing light intensity. These observations provide an interesting reference for forthcoming comparisons with disturbed conditions, such as bleaching events

    Josephson charge qubits:a brief review

    Get PDF
The field of solid-state quantum computation is expanding rapidly initiated by our original charge qubit demonstrations. Various types of solid-state qubits are being studied, and their coherent properties are improving. The goal of this review is to summarize achievements on Josephson charge qubits. We cover the results obtained in our joint group of NEC Nano Electronics Research Laboratories and RIKEN Advanced Science Institute, also referring to the works done by other groups. Starting from a short introduction, we describe the principle of the Josephson charge qubit, its manipulation and readout. We proceed with coupling of two charge qubits and implementation of a logic gate. We also discuss decoherence issues. Finally, we show how a charge qubit can be used as an artificial atom coupled to a resonator to demonstrate lasing action

Enhancement of the mechanical properties of a low-carbon, low-silicon steel by formation of a multiphased microstructure containing retained austenite

    No full text
Dual-phase and transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP)-assisted multiphase steels are related families of high-strength formable steels exhibiting excellent mechanical characteristics. This study shows how a ferrite-bainite-martensite microstructure containing retained austenite can improve the mechanical properties of a cold-rolled low-carbon, low-silicon steel. Such a multiphased microstructure is obtained by a heat treatment involving intercritical annealing followed by a bainite transformation tempering. Depending on the heat-treatment parameters, the samples present a variety of microstructures. Due to the presence of retained austenite, some samples exhibit a TRIP effect not anticipated with such a low silicon content. A composite strengthening effect also results from the simultaneous presence of a ductile ferrite matrix with bainite and martensite as hard second phases. A true stress at maximum load of 800 MPa and a true uniform strain of 0.18 can be obtained by forming a ferrite-bainite-martensite microstructure containing up to 10 pct of retained austenite. These properties correspond to a favorable evolution of work hardening during plastic deformation
