Fluidic self-assembly on electroplated multilayer solder bumps with tailored transformation imprinted melting points
This communication presents fluidic self-assembly of Si-chip on a sequentially electroplated multilayer solder bump with tailored transformation imprinted melting points. The multilayer solder bump is a lead free ternary solder system, which provides a route to transform the melting point of interconnects for applications in solder directed fluidic self-assembly. The outermost metal layers form a low melting point Bi33.7In66.3 solder shell (72 °C). This solder shell enables fluidic self-assembly and self-alignment of freely in water suspended Si-dies at relatively low temperature (75 °C) leading to well-ordered chip arrays. The reduction of the free surface energy of the shell-water interface provides the driving force for the self-assembly. The lowermost metal layer is a high melting point solder and acts as a core. After the self-assembly is complete, a short reflow causes the transformation of the core and the shell yielding a stable high melting point solder with adjustable melting points. The chosen ternary solder system enables the realization of interconnects with melting points in the range of 112 °C to 206 °C
The importance of disease associations and concomitant therapy for the long-term management of psoriasis patients
It is well established that several inflammatory-type conditions, such as arthritis, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and irritable bowel disease exist comorbidly and at an increased incidence in patients with psoriasis. Psoriasis and other associated diseases are thought to share common inflammatory pathways. Conditions such as these, with similar pathogenic mechanisms involving cytokine dysregulation, are referred to as immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs). Considerable evidence for the genetic basis of cormobidities in psoriasis exists. The WHO has reported that the occurrence of chronic diseases, including IMIDs, are a rising global burden. In addition, conditions linked with psoriasis have been associated with increasing rates of considerable morbidity and mortality. The presence of comorbid conditions in psoriasis patients has important implications for clinical management. QoL, direct health care expenditures and pharmacokinetics of concomitant therapies are impacted by the presence of comorbid conditions. For example, methotrexate is contraindicated in hepatic impairment, while patients on ciclosporin should be monitored for kidney function. In addition, some agents, such as beta blockers, lithium, synthetic antimalarial drugs, NSAIDs and tetracycline antibiotics, have been implicated in the initiation or exacerbation of psoriasis. Consequently, collaboration between physicians in different specialties is essential to ensuring that psoriasis treatment benefits the patient without exacerbating associated conditions
Aggression, anxiety and vocalizations in animals: GABA A and 5-HT anxiolytics
A continuing challenge for preclinical research on anxiolytic drugs is to capture the affective dimension that characterizes anxiety and aggression, either in their adaptive forms or when they become of clinical concern. Experimental protocols for the preclinical study of anxiolytic drugs typically involve the suppression of conditioned or unconditioned social and exploratory behavior (e.g., punished drinking or social interactions) and demonstrate the reversal of this behavioral suppression by drugs acting on the benzodiazepine-GABA A complex. Less frequently, aversive events engender increases in conditioned or unconditioned behavior that are reversed by anxiolytic drugs (e.g., fear-potentiated startle). More recently, putative anxiolytics which target 5-HT receptor subtypes produced effects in these traditional protocols that often are not systematic and robust. We propose ethological studies of vocal expressions in rodents and primates during social confrontations, separation from social companions, or exposure to aversive environmental events as promising sources of information on the affective features of behavior. This approach focusses on vocal and other display behavior with clear functional validity and homology. Drugs with anxiolytic effects that act on the benzodiazepine-GABA A receptor complex and on 5-HT 1A receptors systematically and potently alter specific vocalizations in rodents and primates in a pharmacologically reversible manner; the specificity of these effects on vocalizations is evident due to the effectiveness of low doses that do not compromise other physiological and behavioral processes. Antagonists at the benzodiazepine receptor reverse the effects of full agonists on vocalizations, particularly when these occur in threatening, startling and distressing contexts. 3D metamorphic stretchable microphone arrays
This article describes the realization of a metamorphic microphone array. The array morphs from a concave to a planar and then to a convex shape. The morphing array enables a better (12×) sound source localization when compared to existing static and planar arrangements. To enable the realization, a novel stretchable (elongated up to 320% of the original length) printed circuit board fabrication process is reported. The fabrication process enables high-temperature processing, alignment, and registration. Moreover, conventional and otherwise rigid surface mount devices (SMDs) can be used. The process allows the researcher to increase the number of devices (30 SMDs) and interconnects (60 in total) to the required level. As electrical connections, a polyimide-cladded metal track design is reported; the design sustained 11 050 stretch and release cycles. Moreover, 3D reinforcement frames are reported as an effective measure to shield the SMD components from high levels of stress. The resulting products are millimeter-thin stretchable rubberembedded and electrically interconnected electronic structures with mechanical rubber-membrane-like properties. Morphology changes involve deflation and inflation of the membrane to bulge inward or outward. Finally, the use of 3D-shaped chaperon is discussed to provide additional shape control

Long term efficacy and safety of cyclosporin versus parenteral gold in early rheumatoid arthritis: a three year study of radiographic progression, renal function, and arterial hypertension
Objective: To compare the three year safety and efficacy of cyclosporin and parenteral gold in the treatment of early, active, severe rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and to study the reversibility of cyclosporin associated renal dysfunction in patients who discontinued cyclosporin treatment. Methods: The patients continued to receive cyclosporin or parenteral gold in an 18 month open extension to an 18 month randomised, parallel group study. The main efficacy variable was blinded evaluation of radiographic progression of joint damage. Safety variables included serum creatinine, calculated creatinine clearance, and blood pressure. Results: Radiographic progression during follow up was similar in both groups. About 60% of the patients in the intention to treat groups (n=272) and about half of the patients in the completer groups (n=114) had definite radiographic progression in joint damage (increases >6 in the Larsen-Dale score), and about one in three also had substantial progression (>18 increase in Larsen-Dale score). Both systolic and diastolic blood pressure were significantly increased in the cyclosporin group compared with the gold group, and 12/139 (9%) versus 3/139 (2%) (p=0.03) had notably raised blood pressure. The mean serum creatinine increased by 28% at the treatment end point in the cyclosporin group as compared with 7% in the gold group. The mean calculated creatinine clearance was reduced by 16% and increased by 1% in the cyclosporin and gold groups, respectively, at the end of the study. At the final follow up visit after discontinuation of cyclosporin (at least three months after treatment was stopped) the mean serum creatinine was increased by 15% and creatinine clearance reduced by 16%. Sustained increases in serum creatinine at this post-treatment end point were mostly seen in patients with a raised serum creatinine during treatment of at least 50%. Conclusion: Three year changes in radiographic damage during cyclosporin and parenteral gold were similar in patients with early, active RA. Abnormal renal function and raised blood pressure were often seen in the cyclosporin treated patients
