    A V-shape superconducting artificial atom based on two inductively coupled transmons

    Circuit quantum electrodynamics systems are typically built from resonators and two-level artificial atoms, but the use of multi-level artificial atoms instead can enable promising applications in quantum technology. Here we present an implementation of a Josephson junction circuit dedicated to operate as a V-shape artificial atom. Based on a concept of two internal degrees of freedom, the device consists of two transmon qubits coupled by an inductance. The Josephson nonlinearity introduces a strong diagonal coupling between the two degrees of freedom that finds applications in quantum non-demolition readout schemes, and in the realization of microwave cross-Kerr media based on superconducting circuits.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Time-resolved charge detection with cross-correlation techniques

    We present time-resolved charge sensing measurements on a GaAs double quantum dot with two proximal quantum point contact (QPC) detectors. The QPC currents are analyzed with cross-correlation techniques, which enables us to measure dot charging and discharging rates for significantly smaller signal-to-noise ratios than required for charge detection with a single QPC. This allows to reduce the current level in the detector and therefore the invasiveness of the detection process and may help to increase the available measurement bandwidth in noise-limited setups.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

    Expression of phosphate and calcium transporters and their regulators in parotid glands of mice

    The concentration of inorganic phosphate (Pi) in plasma is under hormonal control, with deviations from normal values promptly corrected to avoid hyper- or hypophosphatemia. Major regulators include parathyroid hormone (PTH), fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF-23), and active vitamin D3_{3} (calcitriol). This control is achieved by mechanisms largely dependent on regulating intestinal absorption and renal excretion, whose combined actions stabilise plasma Pi levels at around 1–2 mM. Instead, Pi concentrations up to 13 and 40 mM have been measured in saliva from humans and ruminants, respectively, suggesting that salivary glands have the capacity to concentrate Pi. Here we analysed the transcriptome of parotid glands, ileum, and kidneys of mice, to investigate their potential differences regarding the expression of genes responsible for epithelial transport of Pi as well as their known regulators. Given that Pi and Ca2+^{2+} homeostasis are tightly connected, the expression of genes involved in Ca2+^{2+} homeostasis was also included. In addition, we studied the effect of vitamin D3_{3} treatment on the expression of Pi and Ca2+^{2+} regulating genes in the three major salivary glands. We found that parotid glands are equipped preferentially with Slc20 rather than with Slc34 Na+^{+}/Pi cotransporters, are suited to transport Ca2+^{2+} through the transcellular and paracellular route and are potential targets for PTH and vitamin D3_{3} regulation

    The Accuracy of Automatic Photogrammetric Techniques on Ultra-light UAV Imagery

    This paper presents an affordable, fully automated and accurate mapping solutions based on ultra-light UAV imagery. Several datasets are analysed and their accuracy is estimated. We show that the accuracy highly depends on the ground resolution (flying height) of the input imagery. When chosen appropriately this mapping solution can compete with traditional mapping solutions that capture fewer high-resolution images from airplanes and that rely on highly accurate orientation and positioning sensors on board. Due to the careful integration with recent computer vision techniques, the post processing is robust and fully automatic and can deal with inaccurate position and orientation information which are typically problematic with traditional techniques

    Towards quantum thermodynamics in electronic circuits

    Electronic circuits operating at sub-kelvin temperatures are attractive candidates for studying classical and quantum thermodynamics: their temperature can be controlled and measured locally with exquisite precision, and they allow experiments with large statistical samples. The availability and rapid development of devices such as quantum dots, single-electron boxes and superconducting qubits only enhance their appeal. But although these systems provide fertile ground for studying heat transport, entropy production and work in the context of quantum mechanics, the field remains in its infancy experimentally. Here, we review some recent experiments on quantum heat transport, fluctuation relations and implementations of Maxwell’s demon, revealing the rich physics yet to be fully probed in these systems.Peer reviewe

    The humanistic roots of Islamic administration and leadership for education : philosophical foundations for cross-cultural and transcultural teaching

    For a number of decades, a humanistic approach has been a minor but persistent one in the Western field of administrative and leadership studies, and only recently has been broadening to include other humanist traditions (Dierksmeier et al., 2011) and has yet to be fully explored in educational administration and its pedagogy and curriculum although some foundational work has been done (e.g., Samier, 2005). The focus in this chapter is on the Islamic humanist tradition as it relates to the teaching of educational administration and leadership in a Muslim context, with implications for cross-cultural and transcultural use. The second purpose of the chapter is to show the correspondences that exist between the Islamic and Western humanist traditions in terms of human values, knowledge and educational ideal, which in this chapter are argued to be close to the Western Idealist tradition and the German Bildung conception of education as well as the strong interpretive and hermeneutic foundations that originated in the Islamic tradition and which influenced the foundations of many relevant European schools of thought, particularly in the Enlightenment.The initial section of the chapter is a comparative examination of the central principles of the Islamic humanist tradition from the classical through to contemporary times with the Western humanist tradition as they relate to conceptions of the good, ethics, the construction of meaning and a set of higher order values predicated upon human dignity, integrity, empathy, well-being, and the public good (Goodman, 2003) covering a number of important scholars like Al Farabi, al Isfanhani, and Edward Said (e.g., Kraemer, 1986). In both, professions are viewed as meaningful work that allow for large measures of decision making, and are grounded in human qualities and needs including autonomy, freedom and emancipation balanced with responsibilities, obligations and duties to society. These are compared with the corresponding principles of knowledge in Western humanism which includes a strong constructivist view of reality (Makdisi, 1990). Secondly, the chapter examines the principles of good or ideal leadership and administration that humanism aims at in its preparation of officials, including those in the educational sector in both the classical Islamic tradition (Hassi, 2012) and Western approaches to humanistic administration and leadership (Czarniawska-Joerges & Guillet de Monthoux, 1994; Gagliardi & Czarniawska, 2006; Leoussi, 2000). The third section focusses on close correspondences that exist between the Islamic (Afsaruddin, 2016; al-Attas, 1980; Yasin & Jani, 2013) and Western (Aloni, 2007; Veugelers, 2011) humanist education traditions in terms of educational ideal as well as the kind of teaching practices that distinguish these traditions (Daiber, 2013; Dossett, 2014) as they apply to educational administration and leadership (Greenfield & Ribbins, 1993). The chapter concludes with a discussion of how the Islamic humanist tradition can contribute to cross-cultural and transcultural graduate teaching in international educational administration (Khan & Amann, 2013)

    Determination of kidney function in patients with ovarian cancer treated with chemotherapy: calculation versus measurement of creatine clearance

    In patients with ovarian cancer receiving chemotherapy we compared the creatinine clearance measured in the usual way with the calculation of the creatinine clearance according to the formulas of Jelliffe and Cockroft. Regression analysis only showed a moderate correlation, whereas the analysis of the data by ROC curves allows the use of these formulas as screening tests with acceptable values of sensitivity and false-positive rate. Therefore, in the majority of these patients, collecting urine over 24 h before starting chemotherapy is no longer necessary

    Serial assessment of somatic and cardiovascular development in patients with single ventricle undergoing Fontan procedure

    BACKGROUND The palliation of patients with single ventricle (SV) undergoing Fontan procedure led to improved long-term survival but is still limited due to cardiovascular complications. The aim of this study was to describe the somatic and cardiovascular development of Fontan patients until adolescence and to identify determining factors. METHODS We retrospectively assessed somatic growth, vascular growth of pulmonary arteries, and cardiac growth of the SV and systemic semilunar valve from 0 to 16 years of age using transthoracic echocardiography. The Doppler inflow pattern of the atrioventricular valve was quantified by E-, A-wave and E/A ratio. All data were converted to z-scores and analyzed using linear mixed effect models to identify associations with age at Fontan procedure, gender, and ventricular morphology. RESULTS 134 patients undergoing Fontan procedure at a median age of 2.4 (IQR 2.12 to 2.8) years were analyzed. A catch-up of somatic growth after Fontan procedure until school age was found, with lower body height and weight z-scores in male patients and patients with systemic right ventricles. An early time of Fontan procedure was favorable for somatic growth, but not for vascular growth. Cardiac development indicated a decrease of SV end-diastolic diameter z-score until adolescence. Despite a trend towards normalization, E-wave and E/A ratio z-scores were diminished over the entire period. CONCLUSIONS There is a catch-up growth of somatic, vascular and cardiac parameters after Fontan procedure, which in our cohort depends on the time of Fontan procedure, ventricular morphology, and gender.
