    Hadronization effects in event shape moments

    We study the moments of hadronic event shapes in e+ee^+e^- annihilation within the context of next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) perturbative QCD predictions combined with non-perturbative power corrections in the dispersive model. This model is extended to match upon the NNLO perturbative prediction. The resulting theoretical expression has been compared to experimental data from JADE and OPAL, and a new value for αs(MZ)\alpha_s(M_Z) has been determined, as well as of the average coupling α0\alpha_0 in the non-perturbative region below μI=2\mu_I=2 GeV within the dispersive model: \alpha_s(M_Z)&=0.1153\pm0.0017(\mathrm{exp})\pm0.0023(\mathrm{th}),\alpha_0&=0.5132\pm0.0115(\mathrm{exp})\pm0.0381(\mathrm{th}), The precision of the αs(MZ)\alpha_s(M_Z) value has been improved in comparison to the previously available next-to-leading order analysis. We observe that the resulting power corrections are considerably larger than those estimated from hadronization models in multi-purpose event generator programs.Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures, 15 tables.     Estimation of the Compression Modulus of a Technical Rubber via Cyclic Volumetric Compression Tests

    In many applications for finite element (FE) simulations rubber materials are assumed to be nearly incompressible by applying a high ratio between compression modulus and shear modulus. The compression modulus is commonly given as a constant value in FE analysis. In reality this assumption is not fully correct. Influencing factors like the compressibility of the included filler can lead to a notably change of the compression modulus during mechanical loading. The focus of this work is on the estimation of the cyclic evolution of the compression modulus for a technical ethylene propylene diene rubber (EPDM) by using cyclic volumetric compression tests

    NNLO phase space master integrals for two-to-one inclusive cross sections in dimensional regularization

    We evaluate all phase space master integrals which are required for the total cross section of generic 2 -> 1 processes at NNLO as a series expansion in the dimensional regulator epsilon. Away from the limit of threshold production, our expansion includes one order higher than what has been available in the literature. At threshold, we provide expressions which are valid to all orders in terms of Gamma functions and hypergeometric functions. These results are a necessary ingredient for the renormalization and mass factorization of singularities in 2 -> 1 inclusive cross sections at NNNLO in QCD.Comment: 37 pages, plus 3 ancillary files containing analytic expressions in Maple forma

    Measurement of the strong coupling alpha_S from the three-jet rate in e+e- - annihilation using JADE data

    We present a measurement of the strong coupling alpha_S using the three-jet rate measured with the Durham algorithm in e+e- -annihilation using data of the JADE experiment at centre-of-mass energies between 14 and 44 GeV. Recent theoretical improvements provide predictions of the three-jet rate in e+e- -annihilation at next-to-next-to-leading order. In this paper a measurement of the three-jet rate is used to determine the strong coupling alpha_s from a comparison to next-to-next-to-leading order predictions matched with next-to-leading logarithmic approximations and yields a value for the strong coupling alpha_S(MZ) = 0.1199+- 0.0010 (stat.) +- 0.0021 (exp.) +- 0.0054 (had.) +- 0.0007 (theo.) consistent with the world average.Comment: 27 pages, 8 figure

    Determination of the Strong Coupling \boldmath{\as} from hadronic Event Shapes and NNLO QCD predictions using JADE Data

    Event Shape Data from e+ee^+e^- annihilation into hadrons collected by the JADE experiment at centre-of-mass energies between 14 GeV and 44 GeV are used to determine the strong coupling αS\alpha_S. QCD predictions complete to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO), alternatively combined with resummed next-to-leading-log-approximation (NNLO+NLLA) calculations, are used. The combined value from six different event shape observables at the six JADE centre-of-mass energies using the NNLO calculations is αS(MZ)\alpha_S(M_Z)= 0.1210 +/- 0.0007(stat.) +/- 0.0021(expt.) +/- 0.0044(had.) +/- 0.0036(theo.) and with the NNLO+NLLA calculations the combined value is αS\alpha_S= 0.1172 +/- 0.0006(stat.) +/- 0.0020(expt.) +/- 0.0035(had.) +/- 0.0030(theo.) . The stability of the NNLO and NNLO+NLLA results with respect to missing higher order contributions, studied by variations of the renormalisation scale, is improved compared to previous results obtained with NLO+NLLA or with NLO predictions only. The observed energy dependence of αS\alpha_S agrees with the QCD prediction of asymptotic freedom and excludes absence of running with 99% confidence level.Comment: 9 pages, EPHJA style, 4 figures, corresponds to published version with JADE author lis

    Double-Spin Asymmetry of J/psi Production in Polarized pp Collisions at HERA-N\vec N

    We calculated the color-octet contribution to the double spin asymmetry of J/ψJ/\psi hadroproduction with nonzero transverse momenta at fixed target energies s40\sqrt{s}\simeq40 GeV. It is shown that the color-octet contribution is dominant in the asymmetries. The expected asymmetries and statistical errors in a future option of HERA with longitudinally polarized protons at HERA-N\vec N should allow one to distinguish between different parametrizations for the polarized gluon distribution in the proton.Comment: 14 pages with 6 figures (epsfig), LaTeX; Some figures are changed and misprint is correcte

    Extraction of the pion distribution amplitude from polarized muon pair production

    We consider the production of muon pairs from the scattering of pions on longitudinally polarized protons. We calculate the cross section and the single spin asymmetry for this process, taking into account pion bound state effects. We work in the kinematic region where the photon has a large longitudinal momentum fraction, which allows us to treat the bound state problem perturbatively. Our predictions are directly proportional to the pion distribution amplitude.     I consider the expansion of transcendental functions in a small parameter around rational numbers. This includes in particular the expansion around half-integer values. I present algorithms which are suitable for an implementation within a symbolic computer algebra system. The method is an extension of the technique of nested sums. The algorithms allow in addition the evaluation of binomial sums, inverse binomial sums and generalizations thereof.Comment: 21 page
