The Effect of Player Performance on Free Agency Contract Value in Major League Baseball
This study estimates the effect of player performance on free agency contract values in Major League Baseball (MLB). We hypothesize that performance, as measured by Wins Above Replacement (WAR), has a positive effect on the contract value. To test this, we specify and estimate a linear regression for contract value as a function of current and lagged WAR values and other control variables. Using data from 82 major league position players during the 2013 and 2014 seasons, our results indicate that the current and lagged values of WAR have a significant, positive effect on contract value. Among the control variables, the contract length has a significant, positive effect on the contract value. The model is used to predict free agent contract values set during the 2015 off-season. This prediction for 25 players has an average error of 35%, without systematic over-or under-prediction
Information Preserving Component Analysis: Data Projections for Flow Cytometry Analysis
Flow cytometry is often used to characterize the malignant cells in leukemia
and lymphoma patients, traced to the level of the individual cell. Typically,
flow cytometric data analysis is performed through a series of 2-dimensional
projections onto the axes of the data set. Through the years, clinicians have
determined combinations of different fluorescent markers which generate
relatively known expression patterns for specific subtypes of leukemia and
lymphoma -- cancers of the hematopoietic system. By only viewing a series of
2-dimensional projections, the high-dimensional nature of the data is rarely
exploited. In this paper we present a means of determining a low-dimensional
projection which maintains the high-dimensional relationships (i.e.
information) between differing oncological data sets. By using machine learning
techniques, we allow clinicians to visualize data in a low dimension defined by
a linear combination of all of the available markers, rather than just 2 at a
time. This provides an aid in diagnosing similar forms of cancer, as well as a
means for variable selection in exploratory flow cytometric research. We refer

Impairment of pneumococcal antigen specific isotype-switched IgG memory B-cell immunity in HIV infected Malawian adults
Pneumococcal disease is associated with a particularly high morbidity and mortality amongst adults in HIV endemic countries. Our previous findings implicating a B-cell defect in HIV-infected children from the same population led us to comprehensively characterize B-cell subsets in minimally symptomatic HIV-infected Malawian adults and investigate the isotype-switched IgG memory B-cell immune response to the pneumococcus. We show that similar to vertically acquired HIV-infected Malawian children, horizontally acquired HIV infection in these adults is associated with IgM memory B-cell (CD19+ CD27+ IgM+ IgD+) depletion, B-cell activation and impairment of specific IgG B-cell memory to a range of pneumococcal proteins. Our data suggest that HIV infection affects both T-cell independent and T-cell dependent B-cell maturation, potentially leading to impairment of humoral responses to extracellular pathogens such as the pneumococcus, and thus leaving this population susceptible to invasive disease.Oluwadamilola H. Grassland vegetation from three conservation measures
accepted for publicationSemi-natural grassland habitats have declined significantly throughout Europe. To halt the decline, grassland conservation measures have been included in most European agri-environment schemes. This is the first study to compare the botanical composition of grassland habitats managed under the Irish Agri Environment Options Scheme (AEOS). Sixty fields on dry stock pastoral farms in receipt of agri-environment payments for grassland conservation were surveyed, with twenty fields being enrolled in each of the following AEOS options: Traditional Hay Meadow (THM), Species Rich Grassland (SRG) and Natura 2000 species rich grassland (Natura).
The vegetation quality of sites enrolled in the Natura measure was higher than those enrolled in the THM and SRG measures. Natura sites had the greatest species richness with a mean > 40 species per site, which included approximately 17 species indicative of high botanical quality. Traditional Hay Meadow sites had the lowest species richness (mean 29 species per site) and were dominated by species associated with improved grassland. Some THM sites had good levels of botanical richness and were similar in composition to Natura sites, with some Natura sites having a lower vegetation quality, more similar to that of THM sites. Species Rich Grassland had a botanical richness that was intermediate between THM and Natura sites. A thorough assessment of the effectiveness of these measures was confounded by a lack of quantitative objectives for the target community composition to be attained. We discuss limitations and potential opportunities regarding the design, targeting, implementation and cost-effectiveness of these agri-environment measures.Teagasc Walsh Fellowship Programm

Unstable Nonradial Oscillations on Helium Burning Neutron Stars
Material accreted onto a neutron star can stably burn in steady state only
when the accretion rate is high (typically super-Eddington) or if a large flux
from the neutron star crust permeates the outer atmosphere. For such situations
we have analyzed the stability of nonradial oscillations, finding one unstable
mode for pure helium accretion. This is a shallow surface wave which resides in
the helium atmosphere above the heavier ashes of the ocean. It is excited by
the increase in the nuclear reaction rate during the oscillations, and it grows
on the timescale of a second. For a slowly rotating star, this mode has a
frequency of approximately 20-30 Hz (for l=1), and we calculate the full
spectrum that a rapidly rotating (>>30 Hz) neutron star would support. The
short period X-ray binary 4U 1820--30 is accreting helium rich material and is
the system most likely to show this unstable mode,especially when it is not
exhibiting X-ray bursts. Our discovery of an unstable mode in a thermally
stable atmosphere shows that nonradial perturbations have a different stability
criterion than the spherically symmetric thermal perturbations that generate

Lateral Pile Response from Model Tests in a Large Centrifuge
Lateral loading tests on instrumented model piles in saturated sand in a centrifuge are described. Piles were tested in isolation and in groups of two, three and six piles. Data were obtained on deflections and bending moments in single piles and on interaction factors between piles. Response of single piles compared favourably with data from Mustang Island field tests. Experimental interaction factors generally differed from those commonly used which are derived from elastic theory. The difference depends on pile spacing
