Gravitational-wave bursts from soft gamma-ray repeaters: Can they be detected?

In this letter we suggest a scenario for simultaneous emission of gravitational-wave and γ\gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) from soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGRs). we argue that both of the radiations can be generated by a super-Eddington accreting neutron stars in X-ray binaries. In this model a supercritical accretion transient takes back onto the remnant star the disk leftover by the hydrodynamic instability phase of a low magnetized, rapidly rotating neutron star in a X-ray binary system. We estimate the rise timescale Δtc=0.21ms\Delta t_c = 0.21 ms, minimum mass accretion rate needed to trigger the γ\gamma-ray emission, M˙λ=4.5×1028g\dot{M}_\lambda = 4.5 \times 10^{28} g, and its effective associated temperature Teff=740keVT_{eff} = 740 keV, and the timescale for repeating a burst of γ\gamma-rays ΔτR=11.3yr\Delta \tau_R = 11.3 yr. Altogether, we find the associated GW amplitude and frequency to be hc=2.7×1023/(Hz)1/2h_c = 2.7 \times 10^{-23}/{(Hz)}^{1/2} and fgw=966Hzf_{gw} = 966 Hz, for a source distance 55kpc\sim 55 kpc. Detectability of the pulses by t he forthcoming GW anntenas is discussed and found likely.Comment: 5 pages, [prl]{revtex}, 1 PS figure included. To appear in Physical Review Letter

Wave polarizations for a beam-like gravitational wave in quadratic curvature gravity

We compute analytically the tidal field and polarizations of an exact gravitational wave generated by a cylindrical beam of null matter of finite width and length in quadratic curvature gravity. We propose that this wave can represent the gravitational wave that keep up with the high energy photons produced in a gamma ray burst (GRB) source.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, minor corrections, to appear in CQ

Equilibrium and Disorder-induced behavior in Quantum Light-Matter Systems

We analyze equilibrium properties of coupled-doped cavities described by the Jaynes-Cummings- Hubbard Hamiltonian. In particular, we characterize the entanglement of the system in relation to the insulating-superfluid phase transition. We point out the existence of a crossover inside the superfluid phase of the system when the excitations change from polaritonic to purely photonic. Using an ensemble statistical approach for small systems and stochastic-mean-field theory for large systems we analyze static disorder of the characteristic parameters of the system and explore the ground state induced statistics. We report on a variety of glassy phases deriving from the hybrid statistics of the system. On-site strong disorder induces insulating behavior through two different mechanisms. For disorder in the light-matter detuning, low energy cavities dominate the statistics allowing the excitations to localize and bunch in such cavities. In the case of disorder in the light- matter coupling, sites with strong coupling between light and matter become very significant, which enhances the Mott-like insulating behavior. Inter-site (hopping) disorder induces fluidity and the dominant sites are strongly coupled to each other.Comment: about 10 pages, 12 figure

Response of the Brazilian gravitational wave detector to signals from a black hole ringdown

It is assumed that a black hole can be disturbed in such a way that a ringdown gravitational wave would be generated. This ringdown waveform is well understood and is modelled as an exponentially damped sinusoid. In this work we use this kind of waveform to study the performance of the SCHENBERG gravitational wave detector. This first realistic simulation will help us to develop strategies for the signal analysis of this Brazilian detector. We calculated the signal-to-noise ratio as a function of frequency for the simulated signals and obtained results that show that SCHENBERG is expected to be sensitive enough to detect this kind of signal up to a distance of 20kpc\sim 20\mathrm{kpc}.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, Amaldi 5 Conference Proceedings contribution.
