Programs and materials in the language arts for Negro junior high school students

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to survey the programs and materials for Negro junior high school pupils. This study was limited to: programs and materials used in curricula with disadvantaged Negro junior high school pupils. Through this study the writer hoped to show that programs and materials are available for those students who are deficient in language development. Educators can enhance and augment programs in their schools by making use of them. Flexible experimentation with vicarious programs should be pursued when developing the Language Arts in junior high schools. This is the way educators could meet the challenge of developing a curriculum for junior high school students

History and development of the Mental Hygiene Clinic of Louisville, Kentucky.

Interest in the field of Mental Hygiene and psychiatry has been stimulated by tensions of World War II. As in other communities there are mental hygiene and psychiatric facilities in Louisville. Kentucky. Since there is no available history compiled of this development such a study seems especially valuable at this time. How the community has gone about meeting the needs in this area of work in the past may be seen through such a study and may in turn prove a guide for future planning. The purpose of this dissertation is to trace the history and development of the Louisville Mental Hygiene Clinic. Beginning with an over-all survey of the mental hygiene movement from its inception in 1908. it traces the phases through which the concept passed nationally, then locally

    The right mood

Through this supportive documentation of my thesis work, I hope to verbally clarify the intentions mentioned in my proposal. Due to the subjective nature of abstract paintings, it is nearly impossible to conclusively prove a point. By referring to observations made by and about other artists and their work, I have been able to substantiate and complement my own ideas. I found evidence of what I interpreted to be the underlying attitude that is developed individually but shared collectively by artists. It seems this shared attitude has no geographic or time boundaries. It is remarkable to note parallels between the methods and thoughts involving ancient oriental art, as a whole, and those of particular modern artists. As a result of researching, I have been able to compose more accurately with words, what I have known in my mind: namely, the mood I experience when painting effectively. I felt a strengthening in the validity that one proper artistic attitude exists when I discovered that the ideas of other artists reflect the essences of my thoughts. Along with some of the concerns of ancient oriental painters, I have chosen statements from several twentieth painters to help illustrate my impression of a proper frame of mind

Sexual Health of Older Patients: Attitudes and Perceptions of Healthcare Providers

    Get PDF
Background: Recent research has demonstrated an alarming rate of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) among sexually active heterosexual individuals \u3e age 40 years . Literature suggests that healthcare providers give minimal attention to the sexual health of their older patients and admit to decreased confidence and comfort in broaching the subject of sex with these patients and may not include STDs in a list of differential diagnoses when patients present with uro-genital or other symptoms. Objective: To explore healthcare providers‟ perceptions, awareness, and level of comfort in managing their older patients‟ sexual health. Older patient : individual \u3e age 40 years Methods: Ten health care providers participated in focused guided interviews. Themes, interactions, and sequences in conversations were examined. Results: All of the practitioners indicated sexual health of older patients to be an important aspect of healthcare, but agreed the barriers to discussion with their patients were lack of time in a patient encounter, age and gender of the practitioner, length of time in practice for the practitioner, lack of appropriate education of the practitioner and perceived lack of medical priority. Conclusions: Further research is warranted for this population and increased educational opportunities should be presented to practitioners to decrease barriers to dialogue with their older patients concerning sexual health

Interability Communication Involves More than Just Motivation

    Get PDF
This study analyzed the effect motivation has on reported anxiety, communication apprehension (CA), and willingness to communicate (WTC) in interability interactions. As interability communication is a form of intercultural communication, the author employed the use of intercultural theories and scales. Participants chose one of two URL links and were either presented with a situation in which they were voluntarily engaging in interability communication, or were forced to engage in interability communication. All participants responded to the measures’ questions with one of these scenarios in mind. Although the study’s initial hypotheses were not supported, the rejection of Hypothesis Three, which predicted a positive correlation between compelled interability communication and reported anxiety, but resulted in a significant finding in the opposite direction, could mean that people who are willingly engaging in interability communication experience more anxiety due to their fear of doing or saying the wrong thing. Future research should expand the number of individuals surveyed, compare other demographic factors, and also look to explore ways to lessen anxiety among volunteers in interability communication situations

Potential Use of Contraception for Managing Wildlife Pests in Australia

    Get PDF
There is an increasing level of interest in contraception to manage wildlife pests in Australia, due mainly to concerns over high recurrent costs, animal welfare, and the failure of current control techniques to prevent damage in some instances. We have developed criteria that need to be met for contraception to be successful for pest control: • Technology exists to reduce fertility • An effective delivery mechanism to treat wild animals exists. • The end result of reduced animal damage is achieved. • Effects are humane and nontoxic. • Product is target specific, cost effective, and environmentally acceptable

    Get PDF
This guide outlines a framework for implementing quality assurance programs for child welfare services. The components are based on federal requirements, national standards, and child welfare research. Five steps are described: select outcomes and standards, integrate quality assurance goals and procedures throughout the agency, collect data about outcomes, analyze data, and improve systems as indicated by evaluation findings. Specific topics include the role of the quality assurance system in the Child and Family Services Review process, communication of quality assurance practices, and staff participation in analysis. The manual describes each step of the quality assurance system and reviews the tasks.https://digitalcommons.usm.maine.edu/facbooks/1096/thumbnail.jp

The Associations of the Level of School Wellness Policy Implementation and School Nurse Activities to Weight Status of School Children in Massachusetts

    Get PDF
The increase in prevalence of childhood obesity has prompted child health authorities to propose mandates focusing on population health efforts that may be implemented in public schools. In 2010, the federal government passed the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, reinforcing the 2004 regulations to guide school districts in development and implementation of school wellness policies. The purpose of this secondary data analysis was an examination of the association between implementation of the school wellness policy and school nurse activities to the absolute change in percent of students with body mass index in the obese weight category between the school years 2005-2006 and 2008-2009. The methodological approach used correlational and ordinary least squares regression analyses. The Conceptual Model of Nursing and Health Policy guided this study. The data sources were the Massachusetts Departments of Public Health and Elementary and Secondary Education. Results indicated that school nurse activities were significantly associated with the absolute change in percent of students with body mass index in the obese weight category between the 2005-2006 and 2008-2009 school years. After adjusting for demographic variables, for every point increase in school nurse activities there was 0.16% (p \u3c .05) absolute change in percent obese, indicating a reduction in the percent of students in the obese weight category. The upper fourth quartile school nurse activities was associated with a nearly 3% (p \u3c .05) absolute change in percent of students with body mass index in the obese weight category when compared to the first quartile. The level of implementation of the school wellness policy was not significantly associated with the absolute change in percent of students in the obese weight category during the study years. School nurse ratio and promotional climate for implementation of the school wellness policy were not significantly associated with change in the level of implementation of the school wellness policy or school nurse activities. Childhood obesity is a public health problem that requires a multifactorial approach in treatment. The implications for research are to define, identify and investigate school nurse practices that may be associated with school policy implementation and reduction in childhood obesity

Pando Clone Recovery: Repeat Photos 2014-2019

    Get PDF
The world\u27s largest known clone of aspen (Populus tremuloides), called the Pando Clone is located in the Fishlake National Forest in central Utah. For many decades, significant pressure from ungulate (deer and cattle) browsing has prevented growth of young aspen stems in to trees that would replace the mature trees as they die of natural causes. There has been concern that this impressive 104-acre Pando Clone could be lost altogether due to the excessive browsing of young aspen stems. In 2013, 16 acres of this clone were fenced to exclude all ungulates (deer and cattle) so that recovery of aspen could occur in a portion of the clone
