    Investigating the effect of a stress-based uniaxial anisotropy on the magnetic behaviour of La<sub>0.7</sub>Sr<sub>0.3</sub>MnO<sub>3</sub> elements

    We investigate the interplay between shape anisotropy and a stress-based uniaxial anisotropy on the magnetic domain structure of La&lt;sub&gt;0.7&lt;/sub&gt;Sr&lt;sub&gt;0.3&lt;/sub&gt;MnO&lt;sub&gt;3&lt;/sub&gt; nanoelements as a function of aspect ratio, using micromagnetic simulations. We show that a direct competition between the anisotropies gives rise to high energy multi-domain flux closure configurations, whilst an alignment of the anisotropies can modify the effective element dimensions and act to stabilise a single domain configuration. Our results demonstrate the ability to control the spin state of La&lt;sub&gt;0.7&lt;/sub&gt;Sr&lt;sub&gt;0.3&lt;/sub&gt;MnO&lt;sub&gt;3&lt;/sub&gt; elements in addition to tailoring the domain wall width by controlling the anisotropy of the material, which is key for spintronic applications that require a high spin-polarization and stable magnetic configurations

    Economic rationalisation of health behaviours: the dangers of attempting policy discussions in a vacuum

    When analysing the health behaviours of any group of people, understanding the constraints and possibilities for individual agency as shaped by the broader societal context is critical. In recent decades, our understanding of the ways in which physical and social environments influence health and health behaviours has expanded greatly. The authors of a recent analysis of Australian Aboriginal health data using an economic ‘rational choice model,’ published in this journal, claim to make a useful contribution to policy discussions relating to Aboriginal health, but neglect context. By doing so, they neglect the very factors that determine the success or failure of policy change.     Word order variation and string similarity algorithm to reduce pattern scripting in pattern matching conversational agents

    This paper presents a novel sentence similarity algorithm designed to tackle the issue of free word order in the Urdu language. Free word order in a language poses many challenges when implemented in a conversational agent, primarily due to the fact that it increases the amount of scripting time needed to script the domain knowledge. A language with free word order like Urdu means a single phrase/utterance can be expressed in many different ways using the same words and still be grammatically correct. This led to the research of a novel string similarity algorithm which was utilized in the development of an Urdu conversational agent. The algorithm was tested through a black box testing methodology which involved processing different variations of scripted patterns through the system to gauge the performance and accuracy of the algorithm with regards to recognizing word order variations of the related scripted patterns. Initial testing has highlighted that the algorithm is able to recognize legal word order variations and reduce the knowledge base scripting of conversational agents significantly.     Edge pixel response studies of edgeless silicon sensor technology for pixellated imaging detectors

    Silicon sensor technologies with reduced dead area at the sensor's perimeter are under development at a number of institutes. Several fabrication methods for sensors which are sensitive close to the physical edge of the device are under investigation utilising techniques such as active-edges, passivated edges and current-terminating rings. Such technologies offer the goal of a seamlessly tiled detection surface with minimum dead space between the individual modules. In order to quantify the performance of different geometries and different bulk and implant types, characterisation of several sensors fabricated using active-edge technology were performed at the B16 beam line of the Diamond Light Source. The sensors were fabricated by VTT and bump-bonded to Timepix ROICs. They were 100 and 200 Ό m thick sensors, with the last pixel-to-edge distance of either 50 or 100 Ό m. The sensors were fabricated as either n-on-n or n-on-p type devices. Using 15 keV monochromatic X-rays with a beam spot of 2.5 Ό m, the performance at the outer edge and corners pixels of the sensors was evaluated at three bias voltages. The results indicate a significant change in the charge collection properties between the edge and 5th (up to 275 Ό m) from edge pixel for the 200 Ό m thick n-on-n sensor. The edge pixel performance of the 100 Ό m thick n-on-p sensors is affected only for the last two pixels (up to 110 Ό m) subject to biasing conditions. Imaging characteristics of all sensor types investigated are stable over time and the non-uniformities can be minimised by flat-field corrections. The results from the synchrotron tests combined with lab measurements are presented along with an explanation of the observed effects

    An experimental evaluation of the benefits and costs of providing fertility information to adolescents and emerging adults

    STUDY QUESTION Does the provision of fertility (compared to control) information affect fertility-related knowledge, perceived threat of infertility, anxiety, physical stress and fertility plans in adolescents and emerging adults? SUMMARY ANSWER The provision of fertility information was associated with increased fertility knowledge (emerging adults) and greater infertility threat (adolescents and emerging adults). WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY According to fertility education research, adolescents and emerging adults know less than they should know about fertility topics. Fertility knowledge can be improved through the provision of information in older adults. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION Experimental design. Secondary and university students completed pre-information questionnaires, were randomly assigned via computer to an experimental group, read either fertility (FertiEduc group) or healthy pregnancy information (Control group), and completed post-information questionnaires. Data were collected in group sessions via an online portal. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS Eligible participants were aged 16–18 (adolescents) or 21–24 years (emerging adults), childless, not currently pregnant (for men, partner not pregnant) or trying to conceive, presumed fertile and intending to have a child in the future. Of the 255 invited, 208 (n = 93 adolescents, n = 115 emerging adults) participated. The FertiEduc group received ‘A Guide to Fertility’, four online pages of information about fertility topics (e.g. ‘When are men and women most fertile?’) and the Control group received four online pages from the National Health Service (NHS) pregnancy booklet ‘Baby Bump and Beyond’. Participants completed a questionnaire (fertility knowledge, perceived threat of infertility, anxiety, physical stress and fertility plans, moderators) prior to and after the provision of information. Mixed factorial analysis of variance was used to examine the effects of information provision and hierarchical multiple regression to assess potential moderators of knowledge. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE The FertiEduc and Control groups were equivalent on age, gender, disability, relationship status and orientation at baseline. Results showed that fertility information significantly increased fertility knowledge for emerging adults only (P < 0.001) and threat of infertility for emerging adults and adolescents (P = 0.05). The moderators were not significant. Participation in the study was associated with an increase in feelings of anxiety but a decrease in physical stress reactions. Adolescents had more optimal fertility plans compared to emerging adults due to being younger. LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION This was an experimental study on a self-selected sample of men and women from selected educational institutions and only short term effects of information were studied. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS Provision of fertility information can have benefits (increased fertility knowledge) but also costs (increase potential threat of infertility). Adolescents find fertility information positive but do not learn from it. Fertility education should be tailored according to age groups and created to minimise negative effects. Longitudinal examination of the effects of fertility information in multi-centre studies is warranted and should include measures of perceived threat of infertility

    Development of UMAIR the Urdu Conversational Agent for Customer Service

    This paper outlines the development of UMAIR an Urdu conversational agent developed as a customer service representative. UMAIRs architecture includes a novel engine, scripting language and WOW (Word Order Wizard) string similarity algorithm which are combined to tackle the language unique challenges of Urdu. Initial testing of the new architecture has yielded positive results towards UMAIR being able to cope with the inherent differences in the Urdu language such as word order

    Soft X-ray coronal spectra at low activity levels observed by RESIK

    The quiet-Sun X-ray emission is important for deducing coronal heating mechanisms, but it has not been studied in detail since the Orbiting Solar Observatory (OSO) spacecraft era. Bragg crystal spectrometer X-ray observations have generally concentrated on flares and active regions. The high sensitivity of the RESIK (REntgenovsky Spectrometer s Izognutymi Kristalami) instrument on the CORONAS-F solar mission has enabled the X-ray emission from the quiet corona to be studied in a systematic way for the first time. Our aim is to deduce the physical conditions of the non-flaring corona from RESIK line intensities in several spectral ranges using both isothermal and multithermal assumptions. We selected and analyzed spectra in 312 quiet-Sun intervals in January and February 2003, sorting them into 5 groups according to activity level. For each group, the fluxes in selected spectral bands have been used to calculate values parameters for the best-fit that lead to a intensities characteristic of each group. We used both isothermal and multitemperature assumptions, the latter described by differential emission measure (DEM) distributions. RESIK spectra cover the wavelength range (3.3-6.1 A). This includes emission lines of highly ionized Si, S, Cl, Ar, and K, which are suitable for evaluating temperature and emission measure, were used. The RESIK spectra during these intervals of very low solar activity for the first time provide information on the temperature structure of the quiet corona. Although most of the emission seems to arise from plasma with a temperature between 2MK and 3MK, there is also evidence of a hotter plasma (T approx. 10MK) with an emission measure 3 orders smaller than the cooler component. Neither coronal nor photospheric element abundances appear to describe the observed spectra satisfactorily.Comment: Submitting 1 Latex and 7 figure file
