Superorbital Period in the High Mass X-ray Binary 2S 0114+650
We report the detection of a superorbital period in the high-mass X-ray
binary 2S 0114+650. Analyses of data from the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer
(RXTE) All-Sky Monitor (ASM) from 1996 January 5 to 2004 August 25 reveal a
superorbital period of 30.7 +/- 0.1 d, in addition to confirming the previously
reported neutron star spin period of 2.7 h and the binary orbital period of
11.6 d. It is unclear if the superorbital period can be ascribed to the

Microwave oven fabricated hybrid memristor devices for non-volatile memory storage
© 2014 IOP Publishing Ltd. Novel hybrid non-volatile memories made using an ultra-fast microwave heating method are reported for the first time. The devices, consisting of aligned ZnO nanorods embedded in poly (methyl methacrylate), require no forming step and exhibit reliable and reproducible bipolar resistive switching at low voltages and with low power usage. We attribute these properties to a combination of the high aspect ratio of the nanorods and the polymeric hybrid structure of the device. The extremely easy, fast and low-cost solution based method of fabrication makes possible the simple and quick production of cheap memory cells
A Multicoloured View of 2S 0114+650
We report the results of radio and X-ray observations of the high mass X-ray
binary 2S 0114+650, made with the Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope and the Rossi
X-ray Timing Explorer respectively. No emission was detected at radio
wavelengths. The neutral hydrogen column density was found to vary over the
orbital period, while no variability over the the super-orbital period was
observed. We discuss the causes of the observed relationships and the

Embedding Versus Immersion in General Relativity
We briefly discuss the concepts of immersion and embedding of space-times in
higher-dimensional spaces. We revisit the classical work by Kasner in which he
constructs a model of immersion of the Schwarzschild exterior solution into a
six-dimensional pseudo-Euclidean manifold. We show that, from a physical point
of view, this model is not entirely satisfactory since the causal structure of
the immersed space-time is not preserved by the immersion.Comment: 5 page
An always convergent method for finding the spectral radius of an irreducible non-negative matrix
An always convergent method is used to calculate the spectral radius of an irreducible non-negative matrix. The method is an adaptation of a method of Collatz (1942), and has similarities to both the power method and the inverse power method. For large matrices it is faster than the eig routine in Matlab. Special attention is paid to the step-by-step improvement of the bounds and the subsequent convergence of this method
A note on the uniqueness of global static decompositions
We discuss when static Killing vector fields are standard, that is, leading
to a global orthogonal splitting of the spacetime. We prove that such an
orthogonal splitting is unique whenever the natural space is compact. This is
carried out by proving that many notable spacelike submanifolds must be
contained in an orthogonal slice. Possible obstructions to the global splitting

Molecular dynamics of flows in the Knudsen regime
Novel technological applications often involve fluid flows in the Knudsen
regime in which the mean free path is comparable to the system size. We use
molecular dynamics simulations to study the transition between the dilute gas

Signalment risk factors for cutaneous and renal glomerular vasculopathy (Alabama rot) in dogs in the UK
Seasonal outbreaks of cutaneous and renal glomerular vasculopathy (CRGV) have been reported annually in UK dogs since 2012, yet the aetiology of the disease remains unknown. The objectives of this study were to explore whether any breeds had an increased or decreased risk of being diagnosed with CRGV, and to report on age and sex distributions of CRGV cases occurring in the UK. Multivariable logistic regression was used to compare 101 dogs diagnosed with CRGV between November 2012 and May 2017 with a denominator population of 446,453 dogs from the VetCompass database. Two Kennel Club breed groups—hounds (odds ratio (OR) 10.68) and gun dogs (OR 9.69)—had the highest risk of being diagnosed with CRGV compared with terriers, while toy dogs were absent from among CRGV cases. Females were more likely to be diagnosed with CRGV (OR 1.51) as were neutered dogs (OR 3.36). As well as helping veterinarians develop an index of suspicion for the disease, better understanding of the signalment risk factors may assist in the development of causal models for CRGV and help identify the aetiology of the disease
