Transport and ageing: Extending quality of life for older people via public and private transport
Accessible public transport and the independence that comes with car driving are generally thought to be linked to quality of life in old age. However, there has been almost no research on this topic in the UK. This study by researchers from the University of Paisley and the University of East London used a multi-method approach to explore the relationship between quality of life and access to public and private transport. The study also examined the extent to which the transport needs of older people are taken into account by transport professionals
On discretization in time in simulations of particulate flows
We propose a time discretization scheme for a class of ordinary differential
equations arising in simulations of fluid/particle flows. The scheme is
intended to work robustly in the lubrication regime when the distance between
two particles immersed in the fluid or between a particle and the wall tends to
zero. The idea consists in introducing a small threshold for the particle-wall
distance below which the real trajectory of the particle is replaced by an
approximated one where the distance is kept equal to the threshold value. The
error of this approximation is estimated both theoretically and by numerical
experiments. Our time marching scheme can be easily incorporated into a full
simulation method where the velocity of the fluid is obtained by a numerical
solution to Stokes or Navier-Stokes equations. We also provide a derivation of
the asymptotic expansion for the lubrication force (used in our numerical
experiments) acting on a disk immersed in a Newtonian fluid and approaching the
wall. The method of this derivation is new and can be easily adapted to other
cases
A restatement of the normal form theorem for area metrics
An area metric is a (0,4)-tensor with certain symmetries on a 4-manifold that
represent a non-dissipative linear electromagnetic medium. A recent result by
Schuller, Witte and Wohlfarth provides a pointwise normal form theorem for such
area metrics. This result is similar to the Jordan normal form theorem for
(1,1)-tensors, and the result shows that any area metric belongs to one of 23
metaclasses with explicit coordinate expressions for each metaclass. In this
paper we restate and prove this result for skewon-free (2,2)-tensors and show
that in general, each metaclasses has three different coordinate
representations, and each of metaclasses I, II, ..., VI, VII need only one

What is the topology of a Schwarzschild black hole?
We investigate the topology of Schwarzschild's black hole through the
immersion of this space-time in spaces of higher dimension. Through the
immersions of Kasner and Fronsdal we calculate the extension of the

Energy cost associated with vortex crossing in superconductors
Starting from the Ginzburg-Landau free energy of a type II superconductor in
a magnetic field we estimate the energy associated with two vortices crossing.
The calculations are performed by assuming that we are in a part of the phase
diagram where the lowest Landau level approximation is valid. We consider only
two vortices but with two markedly different sets of boundary conditions: on a
sphere and on a plane with quasi-periodic boundary conditions. We find that the
answers are very similar suggesting that the energy is localised to the
crossing point. The crossing energy is found to be field and temperature
dependent -- with a value at the experimentally measured melting line of
, where is the Lindemann
melting criterion parameter. The crossing energy is then used with an extension
of the Marchetti, Nelson and Cates hydrodynamic theory to suggest an
