At the end of the nineteenth and in the beginning of the twentieth century alcoholism, tuberculosis and venereal diseases were often considered to be the three great plagues of mankind. All kinds of connections were supposed to exist between these three diseases, to such an extent that one could speak of an alcoholism-tuberculosis-syphillis triangle or topos. This article deals with the way Belgian doctors perceived these connections and draws attention to the important role they assigned to alehouses and prostitutes in this respect. It also reveals the fears of physical and moral decadence and degeneration behind the triangular association, as well as its social and political consequences
