    Quick reference list of basic literature to identify tropical African bryophytes

    The aim of this short and selected reference list is to guide bryologists in the very scattered African literature when they try to identify specimens, as no standard bryofloras are available for the whole of Tropical Africa. The idea to compile such a reference list was raised during the Tropical Bryology Workshop held by the British Bryological Society, in the Botany School of Cambridge University, on the 21st of September 1990. The list is based on the senior author’s private library and files. We hope that the publication and distribution of such a list, even if incomplete, will prove to be useful for the future taxonomic and floristic works in Tropical Africa with special reference to the Bryologia Africana Project. We also hope that it will encour- age further collecting and identification by those who are not well versed in or do not possess the very diversified taxonomic literature on African bryo- phytes

    An all-optical approach for probing microscopic flows in living embryos

    Living systems rely on fluid dynamics from embryonic development to adulthood. To visualize biological fluid flow, devising the proper labeling method compatible with both normal biology and in vivo imaging remains a major experimental challenge. Here, we describe a simple strategy for probing microscopic fluid flows in vivo that meets this challenge. An all-optical procedure combining femtosecond laser ablation, fast confocal microscopy and 3D-particle tracking was devised to label, image and quantify the flow. This approach is illustrated by studying the flow generated within a micrometer scale ciliated vesicle located deep inside the zebrafish embryo and involved in breaking left-right embryonic symmetry. By mapping the velocity field within the vesicle and surrounding a single beating cilium, we show this method can address the dynamics of cilia-driven flows at multiple length scales, and can validate the flow features as predicted from previous simulations. This approach provides new experimental access to questions of microscopic fluid dynamics in vivo

    Developmental evidence of acrocarpy in Hedwigia ciliata (Musci: Hedwigiaceae)

    The growth habit of the Hedwigiaceae has been described variously as acrocarpous, pseudopleurocarpous, or pleurocarpous. Anatomical evidence presented here indicates that Hedwigia ciliata is acrocarpous. The archegonia are terminal on the main shoot, and the branching pattern is sympodial. The main axis of each plant thus consists of a succession of subterminal innovations, rather than a single shoot of indeterminate growth. Since the plants are plagiotropic and are pleurocarpous in appearance, this growth pattern can be also called pseudo-pleurocarpous

    In many ways, it is presumptuous for me to speak on the mosses of the tropical regions of China. Many consider the knowledge about the taxonomy, ecology, and geography of tropical bryophytes inadequate (PĂłcs 1982; Schuster 1983; Richards 1984), and this is certainly the case for the bryophytes of the tropical regions of China. The taxonomy of Chinese taxa is generally in a state of disarray. Early workers, both Chinese and others, have tended to describe new species based upon minor or inconsequential morphological characters and without apparent reference to related taxa found outside of China. This is clear from recent monographic studies that compared Chinese taxa with taxa throughout the world

    37 species of mosses are reported from the Mascarenes. Of these 19 belong to the genus Campylopus and 8 to Leucoloma. Three are new to the Mascarenes i.e. Campylopus leucochlorus (C.MĂĽll.) Par., C. paludicola Broth. and C. subperichaetialis Biz. & Kilb., two are new to Mauritius i.e. Bryum truncorum (Brid.) Brid. and Leucoloma cinclidotioides Besch. and four are new to RĂ©union i.e. Campylopus incacorralis Herz. C. praetermissus J.-P. Frahm, C. trachyblepharon (C. MĂĽll.) Mitt. ssp. comatus (Ren. & Card.) J.- P. Frahm and Leucoloma rutenbergii (Geh.) Wright var. elatum Ren. The variety is new to the Mascarenes

    Studies on some Asian mosses of the Pottiales, mainly from the Himalayas

    Eighteen taxa are proposed as new synonyms in this study. Barbula calycina Schwägr. and Tortula ruraliformis (Besch.) Ingham are reported new for China. The types of Barbula pugionata Müll. Hal. and Streblotrichum gracillimum Herzog could not be located; comments on these two taxa are given. Barbula pugionata is considered as a questionable synonym of Syntrichia gemmascens (P.C. Chen) R.H. Zander. Streblotrichum gracillimum is Bellibarbula recurva (Griff.) R.H. Zander. Fruiting specimens of Didymodon giganteus (Funck) Jur., Didymodon leskeoides K. Saito and Didymodon subandreaeoides (Kindb.) R.H. Zander are reported from the Himalayas. Didymodon subandreaeoides and Bryoerythrophyllum rubrum (Geh.) P.C. Chen are reported new for Mongolia. Didymodon hastatus (Mitt.) R.H. Zander replaces Didymodon maschalogena (Renauld & Cardot) Broth. Barbula subcontorta Broth. is here viewed as Didymodon tectorum (Müll. Hal.) K. Saito: the latter is a distinct species
