Magnetic excitations in two-leg spin 1/2 ladders: experiment and theory
Magnetic excitations in two-leg S=1/2 ladders are studied both experimentally
and theoretically. Experimentally, we report on the reflectivity, the
transmission and the optical conductivity sigma(omega) of undoped La_x Ca_14-x
Cu_24 O_41 for x=4, 5, and 5.2. Using two different theoretical approaches
(Jordan-Wigner fermions and perturbation theory), we calculate the dispersion
of the elementary triplets, the optical conductivity and the momentum-resolved
spectral density of two-triplet excitations for 0.2 <=
J_parallel/J_perpendicular <= 1.2. We discuss phonon-assisted two-triplet
absorption, the existence of two-triplet bound states, the two-triplet
continuum, and the size of the exchange parameters.Comment: 6 pages, 7 eps figures, submitted to SNS 200
High Superconductivity, Skyrmions and the Berry Phase
It is here pointed out that the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation may be
associated with a gauge field which gives rise to the antiferromagnetic ground
state chirality. This is associated with the chiral anomaly and Berry phase
when we consider the two dimensional spin system on the surface of a 3D sphere
with a monopole at the centre. This realizes the RVB state where spinons and
holons can be understood as chargeless spins and spinless holes attached with
magnetic flux. The attachment of the magnetic flux of the charge carrier
suggest, that this may be viewed as a skyrmion. The interaction of a massless
fermion representing a neutral spin with a gauge field along with the
interaction of a spinless hole with the gauge field enhances the
antiferromagnetic correlation along with the pseudogap at the underdoped
region. As the doping increases the antiferromagnetic long range order
disappears for the critical doping parameter . In this framework,
the superconducting pairing may be viewed as caused by skyrmion-skyrmion bound
states.Comment: 10 pages, accepted in Phys. Rev.
Jordan-Wigner approach to dynamic correlations in spin-ladders
We present a method for studying the excitations of low-dimensional quantum
spin systems based on the Jordan-Wigner transformation. Using an extended
RPA-scheme we calculate the correlation function of neighboring spin flips
which well approximates the optical conductivity of . We
extend this approach to the two-leg --ladder by numbering the spin
operators in a meander-like sequence. We obtain good agreement with the optical
conductivity of the spin ladder compound (La,Ca)CuO for
polarization along the rungs. For polarization along the legs higher order
correlations are important to explain the weight of high-energy continuum
excitations and we estimate the contribution of 4-- and 6--fermion processes.Comment: 15 pages, 16 figure
Phase diagrams of the generalized spin-1/2 ladder under staggered field and dimerization: A renormalization group study
In the weak-coupling regime of the continuous theories, two sets of one-loop
renormalization group equations are derived and solved to disclose the phase
diagrams of the antiferromagnetic generalized two-leg spin-1/2 ladder under the
effect of (I) a staggered external magnetic field and (II) an explicit
dimerization. In model (I), the splitting of the SU(2) critical line into
U(1) and Z critical surfaces is observed; while in model (II), two critical
surfaces arising from their underlying critical lines with SU(2) and Z
characteristics merge into an SU(2) critical surface on the line where the
model attains its highest symmetry.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figure
Phase Diagram of a Spin Ladder with Cyclic Four Spin Exchange
We present the phase diagram of the Heisenberg model on the two leg
ladder with cyclic four spin exchange, determined by a combination of Exact
Diagonalization and Density Matrix Renormalization Group techniques. We find
six different phases and regimes: the rung singlet phase, a ferromagnetic
phase, two symmetry broken phases with staggered dimers and staggered scalar
chiralities, and a gapped region with dominant vector chirality or collinear
spin correlations. We localize the phase transitions and investigate their
nature.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures, REVTeX 4, published versio
Rung-singlet phase of the S=1/2 two-leg spin-ladder with four-spin cyclic exchange
Using continuous unitary transformations (CUT) we calculate the one-triplet
gap for the antiferromagnetic S=1/2 two-leg spin ladder with additional
four-spin exchange interactions in a high order series expansion about the
limit of isolated rungs. By applying a novel extrapolation technique we
calculate the transition line between the rung-singlet phase and a
spontaneously dimerized phase with dimers on the legs. Using this efficient
extrapolation technique we are able to analyze the crossover from strong rung
coupling to weakly coupled chains.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures included, submitted to Phys Rev
Observation of two-magnon bound states in the two-leg ladders of (Ca,La)14Cu24O41
Phonon-assisted 2-magnon absorption is studied at T=4 K in the spin-1/2
two-leg ladders of Ca_14-x La_x Cu_24 O_41 (x=5 and 4) for polarization of the
electrical field parallel to the legs and the rungs, respectively. Two peaks at
about 2140 and 2800 1/cm reflect van-Hove singularities in the density of
states of the strongly dispersing 2-magnon singlet bound state, and a broad
peak at about 4000 1/cm is identified with the 2-magnon continuum. Two
different theoretical approaches (Jordan-Wigner fermions and perturbation
theory) describe the data very well for J_parallel = 1050 - 1100 1/cm and
J_parallel / J_perp = 1 - 1.1. A striking similarity of the high-energy
continuum absorption of the ladders and of the undoped high T_c cuprates is
observed.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, Revte
Imaging the Two Gaps of the High-TC Superconductor Pb-Bi2Sr2CuO6+x
The nature of the pseudogap state, observed above the superconducting
transition temperature TC in many high temperature superconductors, is the
center of much debate. Recently, this discussion has focused on the number of
energy gaps in these materials. Some experiments indicate a single energy gap,
implying that the pseudogap is a precursor state. Others indicate two,
suggesting that it is a competing or coexisting phase. Here we report on
temperature dependent scanning tunneling spectroscopy of Pb-Bi2Sr2CuO6+x. We
have found a new, narrow, homogeneous gap that vanishes near TC, superimposed
on the typically observed, inhomogeneous, broad gap, which is only weakly
temperature dependent. These results not only support the two gap picture, but
also explain previously troubling differences between scanning tunneling
microscopy and other experimental measurements.Comment: 6 page
Hole Dispersions for Antiferromagnetic Spin-1/2 Two-Leg Ladders by Self-Similar Continuous Unitary Transformations
The hole-doped antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 two-leg ladder is an important
model system for the high- superconductors based on cuprates. Using the
technique of self-similar continuous unitary transformations we derive
effective Hamiltonians for the charge motion in these ladders. The key
advantage of this technique is that it provides effective models explicitly in
the thermodynamic limit. A real space restriction of the generator of the
transformation allows us to explore the experimentally relevant parameter
space. From the effective Hamiltonians we calculate the dispersions for single
holes. Further calculations will enable the calculation of the interaction of
two holes so that a handle of Cooper pair formation is within reach.Comment: 16 pages, 26 figure
