Turak Ngurah Ocin is a dance creation that aims to preserve and introduce the culture of the Dayak Ngaju Ot Danum community through the representation of traditional women's activities in fishing using fishing gear such as buwu and takalak. The dance creation method used in this work includes three stages, namely exploration, improvisation, and forming. The exploration stage is carried out by collecting data through observations and interviews to develop dance concepts. In the improvisation stage, the stylist tries various possibilities of movement based on experiences and emotions related to traditional activities. Furthermore, in the forming stage, the improvised movements are arranged into a complete and meaningful dance composition. The result of this process is a 12-minute dance performance that emphasizes aesthetic, educational and local cultural values. This performance is a medium of artistic expression as well as a means of preserving Dayak culture for the younger generation. Recommendations from this work are the importance of applying structured creation methods and exploring local culture as inspiration in the development of performing arts.

Perceptions and attitudes of radiographers in Malawi towards performing barium enema procedures

Abstract: Malawi is currently experiencing a severe shortage of radiologists. This shortage affects service delivery to patients. Radiographers currently only assist radiologists to perform special procedures where needed. This shortage of radiologists stimulated the role extension of radiographers. Radiography role extension has been realised in many countries where radiographers are performing procedures that are not in their scope of practice, like intravenous injections, barium enemas and even reporting on radiographs. In Malawi no feasibility study has been undertaken to explore different areas in which radiographers can extend their roles. One such role is performing barium enema procedures. Based on the conceptualisation of the research problem, the study question that was answered is: ‘What are the attitudes and perceptions of Malawian radiographers towards performing barium enema procedures as a role extension?’ The aim of this quantitative, descriptive research approach was to explore the attitudes and perceptions of Malawian radiographers towards performing barium enema procedures as an extension of their current role, consequently enhancing their career pathways. A quantitative, descriptive research approach was employed for this study. Radiographers from the four selected referral central hospitals in Malawi were invited to participate in this study. The population for this study included registered radiographers from the selected hospitals in Malawi. A purposeful sampling method was used to select 81 participants. Eighty-one questionnaires were administered and 45 were returned, which is a 56% response rate. Data was collected using an adapted questionnaire based on the reference from existing questionnaires. The questionnaire used both closed and open-ended questions. Data was analyzed through descriptive statistical data using IBM SPSS. Descriptive statistical data analysis is often used to describe and summarize the basic features of the data in the study. The data was presented in frequencies, percentages, and chi-squares. The findings of the study suggested that there was a statistical significance in radiographer perceptions in the two main categories surveyed. Radiographer perceptions remain mere static in Malawi whilst radiographers are still regarded as v assistants at barium enema procedures. The insight gained in this study will contribute to the lack of available quantitative data related to perceptions and attitudes of radiographers towards performing barium enema procedures. This study was limited by the instrument used (questionnaire), as it was adopted from other existing studies, hence it could not generate real innovations to the researcher as well as the results gathered. The study focussed on only central hospitals, one at each region of Malawi, hence it was not possible to generalise the results of other hospitals.M.Tech. (Radiography

Comparison of bird assemblage structures and diversity patterns between seasons among two Ethiopian wetlands

No full text
AbstractWetlands are significant habitats for bird populations, and knowledge of the diversity and other ecological aspects of bird species contribute to the management of the ecosystem. The present study was based on comparative studies of the diversity and relative abundance of bird species in the two wetlands of southwest Ethiopia. The point count method was utilized in this study. For the data analysis, the Shannon–Weaver diversity index, independent sample t-test, and similarity index were employed. A total of 36 bird species under 11 orders and 24 families were identified. The species diversity and relative abundance were higher in both wetlands during the wet season. The Loga wetland had the higher diversity (H’ = 3.089), whereas the lowest species diversity (H’ = 2.643) was recorded in the wetland of Hurri. During the dry season, the Loga wetland (H’ = 2.738) and the Hurri habitat (H’ = 2.283) had higher and lower diversity, respectively. Seasonal variations in bird species diversity are not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Although the two wetlands support several water birds, they have received no conservation attention from concerned bodies. Further follow-up studies over a long period will help determine species-specific conservation measures for wetland-dependent birds.</jats:p

Abstract Wetlands are significant habitats for avian populations, and knowledge of the diversity and other ecological aspects of waterbirds contribute a lot to the management of the ecosystem. The present study was conducted based on comparative studies on the diversity and relative abundance of waterbird species in the three wetlands of southwest Ethiopia. The point count method was utilized in this study. For the data analysis, the Shannon-Weaver diversity index, independent sample t-test, and similarity index were employed. A total of 46 bird species under 11 orders and 30 families were identified. The species diversity and relative abundance were higher in all of the three wetlands during the wet season. The Loga wetland had the highest diversity (H’ = 3.089), whereas the lowest diversity (H’ = 2.643) was recorded in the wetland of Hurri. During the dry season, the highest and the lowest diversity were also recorded in the Loga wetland (H’ = 2.738) and the Hurri habitat (H’ = 2.283), respectively. There is no statistically significant difference between seasons in the species diversity of waterbirds (p > 0.05). Since the existence of waterbirds is based on a wetland ecosystem; human activities very near to the wetland should be controlled for their sustainable conservation.</jats:p

The purpose of the study is to assess the effectiveness of the project, “Market Development Initiativefor Bondhu Chula”. Most people in the rural area of Bangladesh use a traditional cooking device.Biomass is the primary source of energy for cooking devices. The limitations of traditional cookingdevices demand the introduction of Bandhu Chula, which is claimed to be energy efficient andenvironment-friendly. Hence potential entrepreneurs were trained to produce and sell this newdevice. The study employed a qualitative approach. Fourteen stakeholders were interviewed. Thestudy found that users were not aware of this, and the local government representatives were notsensitized. Only 4 per cent of households at Kachuai union of Patiya upazila of Chottogram werefound to use Bondhu chula – a fact, which indicates that the project failed to create entrepreneurs. However, the users, and women, in particular, were found to be happy to use this cooking device as itis less time consuming, energy-efficient, less costly and easy to cook.</jats:p
