    Lessons Learned Entry: Hypergolic Propellant Related Spills and Fires

    The attached report is a compilation of all credible, unintentional hypergolic fluid related spills, fires, and explosions from the Apollo Program, the Space Shuttle Program, Titan Program, and a few other programs. Spill sites include the following government facilities: KSC, JSC, WSTF, VAFB, CCAFS, EAFB, Little Rock AFB, and McConnell AFB. The root causes and consequences of the incidents contained in this document vary drastically; however, certain "themes" can be deduced and utilized for future hypergolic propellant handling. Some of those common "themes" are summarized below: (1) Improper configuration control and complacency can lead to being falsely comfortable with a system (2) Communication breakdown can escalate an incident to a level where injuries occur and/or hardware is damaged (3) Improper propulsion system and ground support system designs can destine a system for failure (4) Improper training of technicians, engineers, and safety personnel can put lives in danger (5) Improper PPE, spill protection, and staging of fire extinguishing equipment can result in unnecessary injuries or hardware damage if an incident occurs (6) Improper procedural oversight, development, and adherence to the procedure can be detrimental and quickly lead to an undesirable incident (7) Improper local cleanliness or compatibility can result in fires or explosions The items listed above are only a short list of the issues that should be recognized prior to handling of hypergolic fluids or processing of vehicles containing hypergolic propellants.     Sports events and social media marketing

    Sport marketing is the specific application of marketing principles and processes to sports products and services. In 2014 the biggest sports event in the world, the FIFA World Cup, took place in Brazil. Billions of spectators around the world saw Germany win the trophy in Rio de Janeiro for the fourth time in history. Yet unlike in previous World Cups, conversation was not only taking place at the numerous public viewings which were held in open spaces like bars and restaurants. For the entire tournament social media like Facebook or Twitter were playing a dominant role in all aspects. With 672 million tweets on Twitter and three billion conversations on Facebook, this was the most social World Cup as well as the most social mega sports event so far. It did not matter whether it were users, athletes or companies, everyone was trying to catch up on the conversation to be informed or inform others about their opinion or latest news. This paper analyzes the implementation of social media marketing during mega sports events with a focus on Adidas’ and Nike’s social media campaigns in the frame of the FIFA World Cup 2014 in Brazil. The analysis shows that social media marketing in the frame of mega sports events gains importance. Those companies finding topics that affect people personally with a relationship to their products achieve success through social media marketing

    Conditional Reliability in Uncertain Graphs

    Network reliability is a well-studied problem that requires to measure the probability that a target node is reachable from a source node in a probabilistic (or uncertain) graph, i.e., a graph where every edge is assigned a probability of existence. Many approaches and problem variants have been considered in the literature, all assuming that edge-existence probabilities are fixed. Nevertheless, in real-world graphs, edge probabilities typically depend on external conditions. In metabolic networks a protein can be converted into another protein with some probability depending on the presence of certain enzymes. In social influence networks the probability that a tweet of some user will be re-tweeted by her followers depends on whether the tweet contains specific hashtags. In transportation networks the probability that a network segment will work properly or not might depend on external conditions such as weather or time of the day. In this paper we overcome this limitation and focus on conditional reliability, that is assessing reliability when edge-existence probabilities depend on a set of conditions. In particular, we study the problem of determining the k conditions that maximize the reliability between two nodes. We deeply characterize our problem and show that, even employing polynomial-time reliability-estimation methods, it is NP-hard, does not admit any PTAS, and the underlying objective function is non-submodular. We then devise a practical method that targets both accuracy and efficiency. We also study natural generalizations of the problem with multiple source and target nodes. An extensive empirical evaluation on several large, real-life graphs demonstrates effectiveness and scalability of the proposed methods.Comment: 14 pages, 13 figure

    The gamma-globin Repressors KLF1, BCL11A, and MBD2: Knowledge Gaps in the Literature

    β-hemoglobinopathies affect millions of people around the world. Research into treatments for these conditions has focused on methods to increase γ-globin expression, because increased levels of γ-globin ameliorate or reduce the severity of symptoms. As more and more studies have been done, a few proteins have emerged as having crucial roles in γ-globin repression and have been established as key genes to study. These are Krüppel-like factor 1 (KLF1), B cell CLL/lymphoma 11A (BCL11A), and methyl binding domain 2 (MBD2). The roles of these proteins in the switch from fetal to adult hemoglobin and in repressing γ-globin expression have been investigated extensively. However, there are still questions that remain unanswered and knowledge gaps that need to be filled. This thesis focuses on the gaps for each of these three genes and presents approaches to answer these questions. Some of the questions discussed are how variants of KLF1 affect its function, if BCL11A regulates the γ-globin gene by binding at a distance or at its promoter, and how MBD2 binds at the β-globin locus. One of the questions that is universal to the three genes is how they each interact with the β-globin locus and if they each interact with each other in order to repress γ-globin expression. We propose knocking down different combinations of two of the three genes simultaneously to determine if the combinations have an additive or synergistic effect on increasing γ-globin expression, which could indicate whether the proteins are working in the same or different pathways. We provide evidence that dual knockdown of BCL11A and MBD2 in HUDEP-2 cells results in a significantly larger increase in γ-globin mRNA than single knockdown of either gene. Our evidence supports our rationale that further experiments on combinations of the KLF1, BCL11A, and MBD2 gene knockdowns in HUDEP-2 cells and then further verification in CD34+ cells could lead to future effective treatments for β-hemoglobinopathies

    AN EXPLORATION OF THE HALO EFFECT IN PROFESSIONAL SOCCER

    A halo effect can lead to significantly biased and distorted judgments in numerous situations and settings in daily life. However, its impact has barely been researched in the sporting environment, although it might help a great deal in understanding how sport fans think and behave. This paper provides an empirical study based on two German soccer clubs, VfB Stuttgart and FC Bayern Munich, analyzing the presence of halo effects.
