If the conventional measure of a generation in family life could be applied in tracing the history of an academic institution, it would be easy to delimit the scope of this lecture as devoted to the first two generations of the law school of The Catholic University of America. To be precise, however, it must be clear that it is the period from 1895 to 1954 that is under review. These were not fifty-nine years of glorious achievement. On the contrary, during these years, as will become evident, the school was several times near dissolution. The bright spots in its record reflect largely the continuing hope of its faculty for the realization of ideals that in the name of the university could never be relinquished but that, alas, were never to receive the material support that might have permitted their attainment. It is only since 1954, in its third generation, that the school has found materially firmer prospects. Its early vicissitudes would be of little interest in themselves except that they illustrate certain aspects of the development of legal education in the country as well as on the campus. But of more than historic interest are the concepts that the deans and the faculty employed in defining the university\u27s role in legal education. These will continue to have relevance for the discussions of what is by now a fourth generation

Cell cycle kinetics of irradiated synchronous and asynchronous tumor cells with DNA distribution analysis and BrdUrd-Hoechst 33258-technique.

Radiation-induced progression delay in S-phase and G2-block, both depending on time of irradiation in the cell cycle, were measured in synchronized Ehrlich ascites tumor cells in vitro using flow cytometric analysis of DNA content in single cells. Similar results could be obtained by the BrdUrd-Hoechst 33258 technique after irradiating asynchronous cells. BrdUrd replaces thymidine in newly synthesized DNA which is not stainable by the thymidine-specific dye Hoechst 33258. The temporal development of the fluorescence distributions after addition of BrdUrd to the medium has been measured in the flow cytometer. In asynchronous cells the mean durations of the cell cycle phases and their perturbations after irradiation could be calculated, and the data agreed with the results in synchronized cells. Division delay afer irradiation consists of a small progression delay in S-phase and a block in G2-phase. Both effects depend on time of irradiation during the cell cycle with delay in S-phase increasing in irradiated late S-cells and G2-block increasing in irradiated G2-cells. Data from both types of experiments were used with a simple model describing the fractions of cells in the cell cycle phases after irradiation had been applied

Development of an integrated management model for effective applications of cooperative construction research

Research management attracts attention of varying intensity within different innovation areas. Whereas in product development efficient management of the whole process is seen as a prerequisite for success, the need for management in pre-competitive applied research is often questioned. If the construction sector is examined, its specific innovation characteristics provide additional obstacles to the achievement of innovation success. Moreover, current research topics focusing on individual technical phenomena have been shifting towards those with a holistic approach, resulting inevitably in interdisciplinary research. The thesis thus aims to develop a holistic management model for pre-competitive applied research in the construction sector, with the focus on steel construction. The study demonstrates the need for increased use of innovation initiators from politics, society and complementary steel user sectors and the formation of networks across the construction supply chain. For the project phase optimization potential is demonstrated in efforts to realize the exchange of technical information and joint creation of knowledge between science and industry. The holistic management model developed offers scope to implement such approaches to improvement while facilitating a repeatable path to project success. A key model component is the innovation broker, through whom from idea generation to results transfer project success is prepared and supported at differing action levels and with all participants integrated. A project-related Community of Practice is additionally used to implement non-contractual project integration prioritized by industry. The model is also evaluated using current European developments for optimizing research management. Testing within an interdisciplinary research cluster project in the construction sector confirms its readiness for application while revealing further development potential. On this basis recommendations are given on the model’s introduction in the management of applied research in structural engineering. The thesis meets the requirement of responding to practical problems while expanding the theoretical understanding of research management
