In this essay I explain the concept of discursive leadership and describe how it is mapped on the leadership practice of Dr. Jeffrey Vitter, Ole Miss Chancellor. I provide multiple examples illustrating instances of this mapping and outline the vocabulary of key terms that my MBA students derived from Chancellor Vitter’s letters, speeches, statements, and social media presence. My essay provides a unique contribution to our understanding of discursive leadership practice in the context of higher education

The purpose of this paper is to integrate research from the fields of economics, management and consumer satisfaction in an attempt to better understand the nature of expectations and the process of their formation in realistic job previews (RJP) and expectations lowering procedures (ELP) methods of influencing the development of realistic expectations about a position and an organization. The approach to the paper development is to initially review the research regarding met expectations and expectation formation, while later to introduce Expectation Disconfirmation Theory and relate it to both RJP and ELP.  Borrowing from the aforementioned diverse areas, a model is developed containing a continuum of expectations, disconfirmation, satisfaction and turnover intention that provides some insight, from a theoretical perspective, why RJP and ELP frequently result in successful and positive organizational outcomes.  “We fear things in proportion to our ignorance of them.”   (Titus Livius

Exploring The Developmental Potential Of Leader-Follower Interactions: A Constructive-Developmental Approach

Researchers in leadership have long recognized the important role of leaders in developing the competencies of followers.More recently, however, scholars have begun to emphasize the pivotal role of followers in the development of leaders. We use constructive developmental theory (e.g., Kegan, 1982; Loevinger & Blasi, 1976) to suggest that both leaders and followers influence the development of the meaningmaking systems of their counterparts in leader–follower dyads. We argue that a combination of challenge – in the formof delegation, participation, and feedback – and support – in the form of positive leader–follower relationships – works to promote the development ofmore complex meaningmaking systems in leaders and followers, thus enriching both individuals in the dyad

Promoting Ethical Corporate Behavior in a Global Context

    Get PDF
The goal of this paper is to provide executives with actionable strategies for promoting ethical corporate behavior through the recognition, understanding, and management of the social comparison process. To that end, we discuss how social comparison may influence the behavior of managers in ethical contexts and particularly how errors in social comparison (like pluralistic ignorance and false consensus) may increase the number of ethical dilemmas in organizations. We suggest that the appropriate management of social comparison could limit the occurrence of unethical behavior in organizations. We conclude with recommendations for executive actions to initiate programs that may facilitate the development of an ethical corporate culture by emphasizing managerial accountability

    Authentic Leadership: A Historical Perspective

    Get PDF
The purpose of this paper is to interpret the historical meanings conveyed by Barnard's classic works and use them for theorizing about authenticity of leaders in executive roles. Our analysis employs an interpretative logic for meanings of historical ideas proposed by Bevir. As an outcome of this analysis, we identify the conditions that contribute to the failure, crisis, tragedy, and/or success of leader authenticity. In addition, we discuss practical and research implications of the proposed framework.Yeshttps://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/manuscript-submission-guideline

This dissertation examines the judgment of international human resource managers in global organizations entering emerging markets about the appropriateness of inpatriation practice. First, the strategic drivers and the operating limitations relative to the inpatriation process are outlined. Second, the knowledge-based theoretical perspective on global management staffing is utilized to develop the key research propositions. Third, the analytical approach of policy capturing is used to model the judgment of managers about the appropriateness of inpatriate assignments. Finally, the data on the managers' judgments are analyzed and the results and the findings discussed in terms of the theoretical propositions. The results indicate that the environmental uncertainty of the inpatriate assignment is the most relevant variable in the managerial judgment. The hypothesis of the importance of the unique competence of inpatriates to manage the environmental uncertainly and risk in emerging markets is supported in this study. In conclusion, future directions of the research on inpatriation are suggested
