    This comparative study was conducted to find out how heroism in Japanese and Javanese traditions is manifested into two literary works representing those traditions: Momotarō and Bharatayuda. This study is also aimed to find out the similarities of heroism manifestation in the two traditions. The reason for conducting this study is from the assumption that heroism is a universal concept. Therefore, such heroisms have similarities although they may come from different traditional backgrounds. Structural analysis and binary opposition were used in this study. The structural analysis was used to obtain the data on traditional background of the areas and the actions done by the main characters, while binary opposition was used to obtain the data on the main characters\u27 heroic actions which were then concluded as the heroic manifestation. The result shows that the heroismmanifestation in Japanese and Javanese traditions has the following things in common: 1) conquering enemies, 2) protecting the members of the group, 3) keeping promise, 4) recompense, and 5) acting ethically.     Poetry is a literary work that has existed since long time ago. There are many types of poetry in Japanese Literature, namely, tanka, haiku, shi, kashi, and another. In this thesis, the type of Japanese poem, haiku and shi have similarity. Both of them have similarity in using natural symbols, but they have different meanings. The purpose of this thesis are to determine the meaning of haiku and shi, and also the meaning of the natural symbols in those poems. The methods that are used to analyze the meaning of the natural symbols in the poem are structural method and semiotic method. Structural method is used to analyze the structure of the physical poem and inner structure poem. Analysis of the physical structure consists of diction, imagery, concrete word, and the figure of speech. Analysis of the inner structure consists of theme, tone, atmosphere, feel, and message. This structural method is used to determine the meaning of the whole poem. Semiotic method is used to determine the meaning of the natural symbols in poem. Natural symbols consist of phenomenon of plant, animal phenomenon, phenomenon of water, air phenomenon, phenomenon of soil and other natural symbols. Results of this thesis explain that haiku describes the implicit meaning of the circumstances at the time of the Edo period. Shi explains the feelings of the author. In addition, there are twenty natural symbols that contain in haiku and shi. There are six symbols of the plant phenomena, five animal phenomena, three water phenomena, an air phenomenon, two soil phenomena, and three another natural phenomena. All symbols have different meanings

    This thesis is a research of a short story, Haru no Tori by Kunikida Doppo which was published on 1904. Haru no Tori means The Spring Bird. Haru no Tori is a story about 11 years old boy named Rokuzoo, who\u27s got a mental disorders, which makes a teacher, Watashi, is interested by Rokuzoo\u27s pathetic life. This research is made for answering 2 main questions, such as: 1) to know the structure of Haru no Tori short story, and 2) to know why is Watashi interested on Rokuzoo\u27s life. The method that will used by the author of this thesis is structural method by Greimas. Greimas\u27s method is using two methods, they are actancial scheme and the functional structure. The methods used to facilitate the author to determine the storyline and different points of view, so the author will know what makes Watashi interested in Rokuzoo\u27s life from Haru no Tori. The results of this research by actancial scheme and structural method by Greimas are 14 of actancial schemes, 5 of functional structure, and one main actan which is the main core of Watashi\u27s interest on Rokuzoo\u27s life.So, the conclusions of this research are; 1) because Watashi is a teacher, he thinks he needs to do something to help Rokuzoo\u27s pathetic life by giving Rokuzoo a better education. 2) because Watashi feel so grateful by the kindness of Tanuguchi who lets Watashi stay in a rented room for a living place. 3) besides, Watashi is always interested to Rokuzoo\u27s strange fondness on bird
