"Swiss-Cheese" Inhomogeneous Cosmology & the Dark Energy Problem
We study an exact swiss-cheese model of the Universe, where inhomogeneous LTB
patches are embedded in a flat FLRW background, in order to see how
observations of distant sources are affected. We find negligible integrated
effect, suppressed by (L/R_{H})^3 (where L is the size of one patch, and R_{H}
is the Hubble radius), both perturbatively and non-perturbatively. We
disentangle this effect from the Doppler term (which is much larger and has
been used recently \cite{BMN} to try to fit the SN curve without dark energy)
by making contact with cosmological perturbation theory.Comment: 35 pages, 6 figure
Design and analysis of fractional factorial experiments from the viewpoint of computational algebraic statistics
We give an expository review of applications of computational algebraic
statistics to design and analysis of fractional factorial experiments based on
our recent works. For the purpose of design, the techniques of Gr\"obner bases
and indicator functions allow us to treat fractional factorial designs without
distinction between regular designs and non-regular designs. For the purpose of
analysis of data from fractional factorial designs, the techniques of Markov
bases allow us to handle discrete observations. Thus the approach of
computational algebraic statistics greatly enlarges the scope of fractional
factorial designs.Comment: 16 page
Risk of hematological malignancies associated with magnetic fields exposure from power lines: a case-control study in two municipalities of northern Italy
BackgroundSome epidemiologic studies have suggested an association between electromagnetic field exposure induced by high voltage power lines and childhood leukemia, but null results have also been yielded and the possibility of bias due to unmeasured confounders has been suggested.MethodsWe studied this relation in the Modena and Reggio Emilia municipalities of northern Italy, identifying the corridors along high voltage power lines with calculated magnetic field intensity in the 0.1-<0.2, 0.2-<0.4, and ≥ 0.4 microTesla ranges. We identified 64 cases of newly-diagnosed hematological malignancies in children aged <14 within these municipalities from 1986 to 2007, and we sampled four matched controls for each case, collecting information on historical residence and parental socioeconomic status of these subjects.ResultsRelative risk of leukemia associated with antecedent residence in the area with exposure ≥ 0.1 microTesla was 3.2 (6.7 adjusting for socioeconomic status), but this estimate was statistically very unstable, its 95% confidence interval being 0.4-23.4, and no indication of a dose-response relation emerged. Relative risk for acute lymphoblastic leukemia was 5.3 (95% confidence interval 0.7-43.5), while there was no increased risk for the other hematological malignancies.ConclusionsThough the number of exposed children in this study was too low to allow firm conclusions, results were more suggestive of an excess risk of leukemia among exposed children than of a null relation
Cosmic Microwave Background, Accelerating Universe and Inhomogeneous Cosmology
We consider a cosmology in which a spherically symmetric large scale
inhomogeneous enhancement or a void are described by an inhomogeneous metric
and Einstein's gravitational equations. For a flat matter dominated universe
the inhomogeneous equations lead to luminosity distance and Hubble constant
formulas that depend on the location of the observer. For a general
inhomogeneous solution, it is possible for the deceleration parameter to differ
significantly from the FLRW result. The deceleration parameter can be
interpreted as ( for a flat matter dominated universe) in a
FLRW universe and be as inferred from the inhomogeneous enhancement
that is embedded in a FLRW universe. A spatial volume averaging of local
regions in the backward light cone has to be performed for the inhomogeneous
solution at late times to decide whether the decelerating parameter can be
negative for a positive energy condition. The CMB temperature fluctuations
across the sky can be unevenly distributed in the northern and southern
hemispheres in the inhomogeneous matter dominated solution, in agreement with
the analysis of the WMAP power spectrum data by several authors. The model can
possibly explain the anomalous alignment of the quadrupole and octopole moments
observed in the WMAP data.Comment: 20 pages, no figures, LaTex file. Equations and typos corrected and

Cosmic Acceleration Driven by Mirage Inhomogeneities
A cosmological model based on an inhomogeneous D3-brane moving in an AdS_5 X
S_5 bulk is introduced. Although there is no special points in the bulk, the
brane Universe has a center and is isotropic around it. The model has an
accelerating expansion and its effective cosmological constant is inversely
proportional to the distance from the center, giving a possible geometrical
origin for the smallness of a present-day cosmological constant. Besides, if
our model is considered as an alternative of early time acceleration, it is
shown that the early stage accelerating phase ends in a dust dominated FRW
homogeneous Universe. Mirage-driven acceleration thus provides a dark matter
component for the brane Universe final state. We finally show that the model
fulfills the current constraints on inhomogeneities.Comment: 14 pages, 1 figure, IOP style. v2, changed style, minor corrections,

Large-scale magnetic fields from density perturbations
We derive the minimal seed magnetic field which unavoidably arises in the
radiation and matter eras, prior to recombination, by the rotational velocity
of ions and electrons, gravitationally induced by the non-linear evolution of
primordial density perturbations. The resulting magnetic field power-spectrum
is fully determined by the amplitude and spectral index of density
perturbations. The rms amplitude of the seed-field at recombination is B ~
10^{-23} (\lambda/Mpc)^{-2} G, on comoving scales larger than about 1 Mpc.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figur
Local Void vs Dark Energy: Confrontation with WMAP and Type Ia Supernovae
It is now a known fact that if we happen to be living in the middle of a
large underdense region, then we will observe an "apparent acceleration", even
when any form of dark energy is absent. In this paper, we present a "Minimal
Void" scenario, i.e. a "void" with minimal underdensity contrast (of about
-0.4) and radius (~ 200-250 Mpc/h) that can, not only explain the supernovae
data, but also be consistent with the 3-yr WMAP data. We also discuss
consistency of our model with various other measurements such as Big Bang
Nucleosynthesis, Baryon Acoustic Oscillations and local measurements of the
Hubble parameter, and also point out possible observable signatures.Comment: Minor numerical errors and typos corrected, references adde
Leptonic CP Violation and Neutrino Mass Models
We discuss leptonic mixing and CP violation at low and high energies,
emphasizing possible connections between leptogenesis and CP violation at low
energies, in the context of lepton flavour models. Furthermore we analyse weak
basis invariants relevant for leptogenesis and for CP violation at low
energies. These invariants have the advantage of providing a simple test of the
CP properties of any lepton flavour model.Comment: 26 pages, no figures, submitted to the Focus Issue on `Neutrino

A Filmless Radiology Department in a Full Digital Regional Hospital: Quantitative Evaluation of the Increased Quality and Efficiency
Reggio Emilia hospital installed Picture Archiving and Communications Systems (PACS) as the final step towards a completely digital clinical environment completing the HIS/EMR and 1,400 web/terminals for patient information access. Financial benefits throughout the hospital were assessed upfront and measured periodically. Key indicators (radiology exam turnaround time, number of radiology procedures performed, inpatients length of stay before and after the PACS implementation, etc.) were analyzed and values were statistically tested to assess workflow and productivity improvements. The hospital went “filmless” in 28 weeks. Between the half of 2004 and the respective period in 2003, overall Radiology Department productivity increased by 12%, TAT improved by more than 60%. Timelier patient care resulted in decreased lengths of stay. Neurology alone experienced a 12% improvement in average patient stay. To quantify the impact of PACS on the average hospital stays and the expected productivity benefits to inpatient productivity were used a “high level” and a “detailed” business model. Annual financial upsides have exceeded $1.9 millions/year. A well-planned PACS deployment simplifies imaging workflow and improves patient care throughout the hospital while delivering substantial financial benefits. Staff buy-in was the key in this process and on-going training and process monitoring are a must
One-loop corrections to the curvature perturbation from inflation
An estimate of the one-loop correction to the power spectrum of the
primordial curvature perturbation is given, assuming it is generated during a
phase of single-field, slow-roll inflation. The loop correction splits into two
parts, which can be calculated separately: a purely quantum-mechanical
contribution which is generated from the interference among quantized field
modes around the time when they cross the horizon, and a classical contribution
which comes from integrating the effect of field modes which have already
passed far beyond the horizon. The loop correction contains logarithms which
may invalidate the use of naive perturbation theory for cosmic microwave
background (CMB) predictions when the scale associated with the CMB is
exponentially different from the scale at which the fundamental theory which
governs inflation is formulated.Comment: 28 pages, uses feynmp.sty and ioplatex journal style. v2: supersedes
