Studies on the biology and ecology of Amblyomma Herbraem Koch, 1844 and other tick species (Ixodidae) of the Eastern Cape

Tick borne diseases of livestock are among the most important factors which have retarded economic development in many parts of Africa. Modification of the environment due to the expansion of agriculture into previously undeveloped areas, together with the introduction of livestock, has disturbed the natural balance which existed between ticks and indigenous hosts. Many tick species have adapted to domestic stock, and in some instances have spread over large areas which were previously uninfested. A number of tick species which are parasitic on domestic stock, eg. Amblyomma hebraeum Koch, 1844, Boophilus decoloratus (Koch, 1844), Rhipicephalus evertsi Neumann, 1897 and Rhipicephalus appendiculatus Netunann, 1901, are vectors of pathogenic micro-organisms. The epidemiology of skin cancer and public health strategies for its prevention in Southern Africa

Skin cancer is a non-communicable disease that has been underexplored in Africa, including Southern Africa. Exposure to solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is an important, potentially modifiable risk factor for skin cancer. The countries which comprise Southern Africa are Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa, and Swaziland. They di er in population size and composition and experience di erent levels of solar UVR. Here, the epidemiology and prevalence of skin cancer in Southern African countries are outlined. Information is provided on skin cancer prevention campaigns in these countries, and evidence sought to support recommendations for skin cancer prevention, especially for people with fair skin, or oculocutaneous albinism or HIV-AIDS who are at the greatest risk. Pulsed beams as field probes for precision measurement

We describe a technique for mapping the spatial variation of static electric, static magnetic, and rf magnetic fields using a pulsed atomic or molecular beam. The method is demonstrated using a beam designed to measure the electric dipole moment of the electron. We present maps of the interaction region, showing sensitivity to (i) electric field variation of 1.5 V/cm at 3.3 kV/cm with a spatial resolution of 15 mm; (ii) magnetic field variation of 5 nT with 25 mm resolution; (iii) radio-frequency magnetic field amplitude with 15 mm resolution. This new diagnostic technique is very powerful in the context of high-precision atomic and molecular physics experiments, where pulsed beams have not hitherto found widespread application.Comment: 6 pages, 12 figures.
