Using Bars As Signposts of Galaxy Evolution at High and Low Redshifts
An analysis of the NICMOS Deep Field shows that there is no evidence of a
decline in the bar fraction beyond z~0.7, as previously claimed; both
bandshifting and spatial resolution must be taken into account when evaluating
the evolution of the bar fraction. Two main caveats of this study were a lack
of a proper comparison sample at low redshifts and a larger number of galaxies
at high redshifts. We address these caveats using two new studies. For a proper
local sample, we have analyzed 134 spirals in the near-infrared using 2MASS
(main results presented by Menendez-Delmestre in this volume) which serves as
an ideal anchor for the low-redshift Universe. In addition to measuring the
mean bar properties, we find that bar size is correlated with galaxy size and
brightness, but the bar ellipticity is not correlated with these galaxy
properties. The bar length is not correlated with the bar ellipticity. For
larger high redshift samples we analyze the bar fraction from the 2-square
degree COSMOS ACS survey. We find that the bar fraction at z~0.7 is ~50%,
consistent with our earlier finding of no decline in bar fraction at high

Although the studies highlighted in Kinlen and Peto’s letter describe situations they take to be “national in scope”, none of these adopted the ‘region-wide’ analysis we recommend. Rather, these studies have focussed on rural areas with small populations experiencing extreme levels of inward-migration that had been selected from larger regions/nation states. To definitively avoid bias, our study points to the need for comparisons of areas with varying levels of inward migration, either by comparing all areas within an entire region/nation state or random subsets thereof
5-Fluorouracil-induced cardiotoxicity mimicking myocardial infarction: a case report
BACKGROUND: Severe cardiotoxicity is a documented, but very unusual side-effect of intravenous 5-fluorouracil therapy. The mechanism producing cardiotoxicity is poorly understood. CASE PRESENTATION: A case of 5-fluorouracil-induced cardiotoxicity, possibly due to coronary artery spasm, and mimicking acute anterolateral myocardial infarction is presented and discussed. Electrocardiographs highlighting the severity of the presentation are included in the report along with coronary angiograms demonstrating the absence of significant coronary atherosclerosis. CONCLUSION: Severe 5-fluorouracil-induced cardiotoxicity is rare, but can be severe and may mimic acute myocardial infarction, leading to diagnostic and therapeutic dilemmas. Readministration of 5-fluorouracil is not advised following an episode of cardiotoxicity
Socio-economic patterning in early mortality of patients aged 0-49 years diagnosed with primary bone cancer in Great Britain, 1985-2008
Background: Studies have shown marked improvements in survival between 1981 and 2000 for Ewing sarcoma patients but not for osteosarcoma. This study aimed to explore socio-economic patterning in early mortality rates for both tumours. Procedure: The study analysed all 2432 osteosarcoma and 1619 Ewing sarcoma cases, aged 0-49 years, diagnosed in Great Britain 1985-2008 and followed to 31/12/2009. Logistic regression models were used to calculate risk of dying within three months, six months, one year, three years and five years after diagnosis. Associations with Townsend deprivation score and its components were examined at small-area level. Urban/rural status was studied at larger regional level. Results: For osteosarcoma, after age adjustment, mortality at three months, six months and one year was associated with higher area unemployment, OR = 1·05 (95% CI 1·00, 1·10), OR = 1·04 (95% CI 1·01, 1·08) and OR = 1·04 (95% CI 1·02, 1·06) respectively per 1% increase in unemployment. Mortality at six months was associated with greater household non-car ownership, OR = 1·02 (95% CI 1·00, 1·03). For Ewing sarcoma, there were no significant associations between mortality and overall Townsend score, nor its components for any time period. For both tumours increasing mortality was associated with less urban and more remote rural areas. Conclusions: This study found that for osteosarcoma, early mortality was associated with residence at diagnosis in areas of higher unemployment, suggesting risk of early death may be socio-economically determined. For both tumours, distance from urban centres may lead to greater risk of early death
Synchrotron radiation-based experimental determination of the optimal energy for cell radiotoxicity enhancement following photoelectric effect on stable iodinated compounds
This study was designed to experimentally evaluate the optimal X-ray energy for increasing the radiation energy absorbed in tumours loaded with iodinated compounds, using the photoelectric effect. SQ20B human cells were irradiated with synchrotron monochromatic beam tuned at 32.8, 33.5, 50 and 70 keV. Two cell treatments were compared to the control: cells suspended in 10 mg ml1 of iodine radiological contrast agent or cells pre-exposed with 10 mM of iodo-desoxyuridine (IUdR) for 48 h. Our radiobiological end point was clonogenic cell survival. Cells irradiated with both iodine compounds exhibited a radiation sensitisation enhancement. Moreover, it was energy dependent, with a maximum at 50 keV. At this energy, the sensitisation calculated at 10% survival was equal to 2.03 for cells suspended in iodinated contrast agent and 2.60 for IUdR. Cells pretreated with IUdR had higher sensitisation factors over the energy range than for those suspended in iodine contrast agent. Also, their survival curves presented no shoulder, suggesting complex lethal damages from Auger electrons. Our results confirm the existence of the 50 keV energy optimum for a binary therapeutic irradiation based on the presence of stable iodine in tumours and an external irradiation. Monochromatic synchrotron radiotherapy concept is hence proposed for increasing the differential effect between healthy and cancerous tissue irradiation
Microbial-driven preterm labour involves crosstalk between the innate and adaptive immune response
There has been a surge in studies implicating a role of vaginal microbiota in spontaneous preterm birth (sPTB), but most are associative without mechanistic insight. Here we show a comprehensive approach to understand the causative factors of preterm birth, based on the integration of longitudinal vaginal microbiota and cervicovaginal fluid (CVF) immunophenotype data collected from 133 women at high-risk of sPTB. We show that vaginal depletion of Lactobacillus species and high bacterial diversity leads to increased mannose binding lectin (MBL), IgM, IgG, C3b, C5, IL-8, IL-6 and IL-1β and to increased risk of sPTB. Cervical shortening, which often precedes preterm birth, is associated with Lactobacillus iners and elevated levels of IgM, C3b, C5, C5a and IL-6. These data demonstrate a role for the complement system in microbial-driven sPTB and provide a scientific rationale for the development of live biotherapeutics and complement therapeutics to prevent sPTB

Background
We can improve healthcare services by better understanding current provision. One way to understand this is by linking data sets from clinical and national audits, national registries and other National Health Service (NHS) encounter data. However, getting to the point of having linked national data sets is challenging.
Objective
We describe our experience of the data application and linkage process for our study ‘LAUNCHES QI’, and the time, processes and resource requirements involved. To help others planning similar projects, we highlight challenges encountered and advice for applications in the current system as well as suggestions for system improvements.
Findings
The study set up for LAUNCHES QI began in March 2018, and the process through to data acquisition took 2.5 years. Several challenges were encountered, including the amount of information required (often duplicate information in different formats across applications), lack of clarity on processes, resource constraints that limit an audit’s capacity to fulfil requests and the unexpected amount of time required from the study team. It is incredibly difficult to estimate the resources needed ahead of time, and yet necessary to do so as early on as funding applications. Early decisions can have a significant impact during latter stages and be hard to change, yet it is difficult to get specific information at the beginning of the process.
Conclusions
The current system is incredibly complex, arduous and slow, stifling innovation and delaying scientific progress. NHS data can inform and improve health services and we believe there is an ethical responsibility to use it to do so. Streamlining the number of applications required for accessing data for health services research and providing clarity to data controllers could facilitate the maintenance of stringent governance, while accelerating scientific studies and progress, leading to swifter application of findings and improvements in healthcare
Quantifying Morphological Evolution from Low to High Redshifts
Establishing the morphological history of ordinary galaxies was one of the original goals for the Hubble Space Telescope, and remarkable progress toward achieving this this goal has been made. How much of this progress has been at the expense of the Hubble sequence? As we probe further out in redshift space, it seems time to re-examine the underlying significance of Hubble's tuning fork in light of the the spectacular and often bizarre morphological characteristics of high redshift galaxies. The aim of this review is to build a morphological bridge between high-redshift and low-redshift galaxy populations, by using quantitative morphological measures to determine the maximum redshift for which the Hubble sequence provides a meaningful description of the galaxy population. I will outline the various techniques used to quantify high-redshift galaxy morphology, highlight the aspects of the Hubble sequence being probed by these techniques, and indicate what is getting left behind. I will argue that at higher redshifts new techniques (and new ideas) that place less emphasis on classical morphology and more emphasis on the link between morphology and resolved stellar populations are needed in order to probe the evolutionary history of high-redshift galaxies
