Study of the dependence of 198Au half-life on source geometry
We report the results of an experiment to determine whether the half-life of
\Au{198} depends on the shape of the source. This study was motivated by recent
suggestions that nuclear decay rates may be affected by solar activity, perhaps
arising from solar neutrinos. If this were the case then the -decay
rates, or half-lives, of a thin foil sample and a spherical sample of gold of
the same mass and activity could be different. We find for \Au{198},
, where
is the mean half-life. The maximum neutrino flux at the sample in our
experiments was several times greater than the flux of solar neutrinos at the
surface of the Earth. We show that this increase in flux leads to a significant
improvement in the limits that can be inferred on a possible solar contribution

Power Spectrum Analysis of Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt Decay-Rate Data: Evidence for Solar Rotational Modulation
Evidence for an anomalous annual periodicity in certain nuclear decay data
has led to speculation concerning a possible solar influence on nuclear
processes. We have recently analyzed data concerning the decay rates of Cl-36
and Si-32, acquired at the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), to search for
evidence that might be indicative of a process involving solar rotation.
Smoothing of the power spectrum by weighted-running-mean analysis leads to a
significant peak at frequency 11.18/yr, which is lower than the equatorial
synodic rotation rates of the convection and radiative zones. This article
concerns measurements of the decay rates of Ra-226 acquired at the
Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) in Germany. We find that a similar
(but not identical) analysis yields a significant peak in the PTB dataset at
frequency 11.21/yr, and a peak in the BNL dataset at 11.25/yr. The change in
the BNL result is not significant since the uncertainties in the BNL and PTB
analyses are estimated to be 0.13/yr and 0.07/yr, respectively. Combining the
two running means by forming the joint power statistic leads to a highly
significant peak at frequency 11.23/yr. We comment briefly on the possible
implications of these results for solar physics and for particle physics.Comment: 15 pages, 13 figure
Searches for solar-influenced radioactive decay anomalies using Spacecraft RTGs
Experiments showing a seasonal variation of the nuclear decay rates of a
number of different nuclei, and decay anomalies apparently related to solar
flares and solar rotation, have suggested that the Sun may somehow be
influencing nuclear decay processes. Recently, Cooper searched for such an
effect in Pu nuclei contained in the radioisotope thermoelectric
generators (RTGs) on board the Cassini spacecraft. In this paper we modify and
extend Cooper's analysis to obtain constraints on anomalous decays of
Pu over a wider range of models, but these limits cannot be applied to
other nuclei if the anomaly is composition-dependent. We also show that it may
require very high sensitivity for terrestrial experiments to discriminate among
some models if such a decay anomaly exists, motivating the consideration of

The Energy-dependent Checkerboard Patterns in Cuprate Superconductors
Motivated by the recent scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments [J.
E. Hoffman {\it et al.}, Science {\bf 297}, 1148 (2002); K. McElroy {\it et
al.}, Nature (to be published)], we investigate the real space local density of
states (LDOS) induced by weak disorder in a d-wave superconductor. We first
present the energy dependent LDOS images around a single weak defect at several
energies, and then point out that the experimentally observed checkerboard
pattern in the LDOS could be understood as a result of quasiparticle
interferences by randomly distributed defects. It is also shown that the
checkerboard pattern oriented along to the Cu-O bonds at low energies
would transform to that oriented parallel to the Cu-O bonds at higher energies.

Radiation Hydrodynamical Instabilities in Cosmological and Galactic Ionization Fronts
Ionization fronts, the sharp radiation fronts behind which H/He ionizing
photons from massive stars and galaxies propagate through space, were
ubiquitous in the universe from its earliest times. The cosmic dark ages ended
with the formation of the first primeval stars and galaxies a few hundred Myr
after the Big Bang. Numerical simulations suggest that stars in this era were
very massive, 25 - 500 solar masses, with H II regions of up to 30,000
light-years in diameter. We present three-dimensional radiation hydrodynamical
calculations that reveal that the I-fronts of the first stars and galaxies were
prone to violent instabilities, enhancing the escape of UV photons into the
early intergalactic medium (IGM) and forming clumpy media in which supernovae
later exploded. The enrichment of such clumps with metals by the first
supernovae may have led to the prompt formation of a second generation of
low-mass stars, profoundly transforming the nature of the first protogalaxies.
Cosmological radiation hydrodynamics is unique because ionizing photons coupled
strongly to both gas flows and primordial chemistry at early epochs,
introducing a hierarchy of disparate characteristic timescales whose relative
magnitudes can vary greatly throughout a given calculation. We describe the
adaptive multistep integration scheme we have developed for the self-consistent

Further Evidence Suggestive of a Solar Influence on Nuclear Decay Rates
Recent analyses of nuclear decay data show evidence of variations suggestive
of a solar influence. Analyses of datasets acquired at the Brookhaven National
Laboratory (BNL) and at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) both
show evidence of an annual periodicity and of periodicities with sidereal
frequencies in the neighborhood of 12.25 year^{-1} (at a significance level
that we have estimated to be 10^{-17}). It is notable that this implied
rotation rate is lower than that attributed to the solar radiative zone,
suggestive of a slowly rotating solar core. This leads us to hypothesize that
there may be an "inner tachocline" separating the core from the radiative zone,
analogous to the "outer tachocline" that separates the radiative zone from the
convection zone. The Rieger periodicity (which has a period of about 154 days,
corresponding to a frequency of 2.37 year^{-1}) may be attributed to an r-mode
oscillation with spherical-harmonic indices l=3, m=1, located in the outer
tachocline. This suggests that we may test the hypothesis of a solar influence
on nuclear decay rates by searching BNL and PTB data for evidence of a
"Rieger-like" r-mode oscillation, with l=3, m=1, in the inner tachocline. The
appropriate search band for such an oscillation is estimated to be 2.00-2.28
year^{-1}. We find, in both datasets, strong evidence of a periodicity at 2.11
year^{-1}. We estimate that the probability of obtaining these results by

The dynamics of banking sector and stock market maturity and the performance of Asian economies : time series evidence
PURPOSE – The purpose of this paper is to examine the nature of causal relations between
banking sector maturity, stock market maturity, and four aspects of performance and operation
of the economy: economic growth, inflation, openness in trade, and the degree of government
involvement in the economy.
DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH – The authors look for possible links between the variables by
conducting panel cointegration and causality tests, using a large sample of Asian countries over the
period 1960-2011. Novel panel data estimation methods allow for robust estimates, using both
variation between countries and variation over time.
FINDINGS – The study identifies interesting causal links among the variables deriving uniquely from
our innovations. In particular, The paper finds that for all regions considered, banking sector maturity
and stock market maturity are causally linked, sometimes in both directions. Furthermore, stock
market maturity may lead to economic growth, both directly and indirectly through indicators such as
inflation and trade openness. The findings also support the notion that economic growth affects the
maturity of the stock market in most regions.
PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS – The results lend support to the notion that a mature financial sector is a
key contributor to generating economic growth. Furthermore, economic growth itself has the potential
to bring about maturity in the financial sector.
ORIGINALITY/VALUE – The paper uses sophisticated principal-component analysis, panel cointegration,
and Granger causality tests, methods not used in this literature before. The method was applied to
recent data pertaining to 35 Asian countries – a group of countries that has previously not been

Parity proofs of the Bell-Kochen-Specker theorem based on the 600-cell
The set of 60 real rays in four dimensions derived from the vertices of a
600-cell is shown to possess numerous subsets of rays and bases that provide
basis-critical parity proofs of the Bell-Kochen-Specker (BKS) theorem (a
basis-critical proof is one that fails if even a single basis is deleted from
it). The proofs vary considerably in size, with the smallest having 26 rays and
13 bases and the largest 60 rays and 41 bases. There are at least 90 basic
types of proofs, with each coming in a number of geometrically distinct
varieties. The replicas of all the proofs under the symmetries of the 600-cell
yield a total of almost a hundred million parity proofs of the BKS theorem. The
proofs are all very transparent and take no more than simple counting to
verify. A few of the proofs are exhibited, both in tabular form as well as in
the form of MMP hypergraphs that assist in their visualization. A survey of the
proofs is given, simple procedures for generating some of them are described
and their applications are discussed. It is shown that all four-dimensional
parity proofs of the BKS theorem can be turned into experimental disproofs of

Finance and growth : evidence from the ARF countries
This paper examines the relationships between economic growth and four different types of financial
development in ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) countries over the period 1991–2011. Using principal component
analysis (PCA) to construct development indices, and a panel vector auto-regressive model to test
for Granger causalities, the study demonstrates unidirectional and bidirectional causality between the
variables. The study enhances understanding of the interrelationship between the variables, combining
different strands of the literature, and investigating countries previously neglected in this context. The
paper recommends making banking more accessible to residents without bank accounts in ARF countries
and promoting stock market development to facilitate access to investment capital in order to enhance
