Influence of the Catalyst Supporters upon the Catalyst Nano Particle for Synthesizing Single-walled Carbon Nanotubes
Controlling diameter and chirality of single-walled carbon nanotubes are most interesting aspects on synthesis, and these kinds of controls are desired to be done during the synthetic processes. In fact combination of catalysts, modifying their species, and adjusting the size of catalyst can roughly control the diameter distribution. However, since catalysts including cobalt atoms work much better for synthesizing SWNTs in alcohol catalytic chemical vapor deposition process, which is considered one of the best processes to synthesize, this fact restricts the flexibility of catalyst combination. Usually, supporters are used for avoiding the condensation of catalysts, but it turns out that sometimes these supporters give bad effects on catalysts of losing their catalytic activities. In this paper we synthesized SWNTs by using catalysts on different supporters and considered the influence of supporters by calculating their electronic structures
Magnetostriction studies up to megagauss fields using fiber Bragg grating technique
We here report magnetostriction measurements under pulsed megagauss fields
using a high-speed 100 MHz strain monitoring system devised using fiber Bragg
grating (FBG) technique with optical filter method. The optical filter method
is a detection scheme of the strain of FBG, where the changing Bragg wavelength
of the FBG reflection is converted to the intensity of reflected light to
enable the 100 MHz measurement. In order to show the usefulness and reliability
of the method, we report the measurements for solid oxygen, spin-controlled
crystal, and volborthite, a deformed Kagom\'{e} quantum spin lattice, using
static magnetic fields up to 7 T and non-destructive millisecond pulse magnets
up to 50 T. Then, we show the application of the method for the
magnetostriction measurements of CaVO, a two-dimensional
antiferromagnet with spin-halves, and LaCoO, an anomalous spin-crossover

Electrostatic double-layer interaction between stacked charged bilayers
The inapplicability of the DLVO theory to multilayered anionic bilayers is found in terms of the co-ion-valence dependence of the lamellar repeat distance. Most of the added salt is expelled from the interlamellar space to the bulk due to the Gibbs-Donnan effect on multiple bilayers with the bulk. The electrostatic double-layer interaction is well expressed by the formula recently proposed by Trefalt. The osmotic pressure due to the expelled ions, rather than the van der Waals interaction, is the main origin of the attractive force between the bilayers
Human Hepatocyte Growth Factor Promotes Functional Recovery in Primates after Spinal Cord Injury
Many therapeutic interventions for spinal cord injury (SCI) using neurotrophic factors have focused on reducing the area damaged by secondary, post-injury degeneration, to promote functional recovery. Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), which is a potent mitogen for mature hepatocytes and a mediator of the inflammatory responses to tissue injury, was recently highlighted as a potent neurotrophic factor in the central nervous system. We previously reported that introducing exogenous HGF into the injured rodent spinal cord using a herpes simplex virus-1 vector significantly reduces the area of damaged tissue and promotes functional recovery. However, that study did not examine the therapeutic effects of administering HGF after injury, which is the most critical issue for clinical application. To translate this strategy to human treatment, we induced a contusive cervical SCI in the common marmoset, a primate, and then administered recombinant human HGF (rhHGF) intrathecally. Motor function was assessed using an original open field scoring system focusing on manual function, including reach-and-grasp performance and hand placement in walking. The intrathecal rhHGF preserved the corticospinal fibers and myelinated areas, thereby promoting functional recovery. In vivo magnetic resonance imaging showed significant preservation of the intact spinal cord parenchyma. rhHGF-treatment did not give rise to an abnormal outgrowth of calcitonin gene related peptide positive fibers compared to the control group, indicating that this treatment did not induce or exacerbate allodynia. This is the first study to report the efficacy of rhHGF for treating SCI in non-human primates. In addition, this is the first presentation of a novel scale for assessing neurological motor performance in non-human primates after contusive cervical SCI
Two cases of lymphoepithelial cyst of the pancreas
A 35-year-old man was found to have a cystic mass in the pancreatic body on a routine health examination ; high serum CA19-9 was also detected. The enucleated cyst was diagnosed as a lymphoepithelial cyst (LEC). A 74-year-old man found to have a cystic mass in the pancreatic head by computer tomography as well as high serum CA19-9 was suspected of a cystic neoplasm of the pancreas (IPMN), and pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy (PPPD) was performed. Pathologically, the cyst was found to be LEC. It is often difficult to diagnose pancreatic cyst as LEC preoperatively. Care should be taken not to do over-surgery for benign disease LEC
