On uniqueness of pp-adic period morphisms, II

We prove equality of the various pp-adic period morphisms for smooth, not necessarily proper, schemes. We start with showing that the KK-theoretical uniqueness criterium we had found for proper smooth schemes extends to proper finite simplicial schemes in the good reduction case and to cohomology with compact support in the semistable reduction case. It yields the equality of the period morphisms for cohomology with compact support defined using the syntomic, almost \'etale, and motivic constructions. We continue with showing that the hh-cohomology period morphism agrees with the syntomic and almost \'etale period morphisms whenever the latter morphisms are defined. We do it by lifting the syntomic and almost \'etale period morphisms to Voyevodsky triangulated category of motives, where their equality with the hh-cohomology period morphism can be checked directly using the Beilinson Poincar\'e Lemma

Phase diagram and magnetocaloric effect of CoMnGe_{1-x}Sn_{x} alloys

We propose the phase diagram of a new pseudo-ternary compound, CoMnGe_{1-x}Sn_{x}, in the range x less than or equal to 0.1. Our phase diagram is a result of magnetic and calometric measurements. We demonstrate the appearance of a hysteretic magnetostructural phase transition in the range x=0.04 to x=0.055, similar to that observed in CoMnGe under hydrostatic pressure. From magnetisation measurements, we show that the isothermal entropy change associated with the magnetostructural transition can be as high as 4.5 J/(K kg) in a field of 1 Tesla. However, the large thermal hysteresis in this transition (~20 K) will limit its straightforward use in a magnetocaloric device.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure

As a response to the growing demand of consumers for active, natural ingredients of cosmetic preparations, manufacturers are looking for new raw materials, rich in compounds with high antioxidative activity. In this research an attempt were made to evaluate the content of phenolic compounds, L-ascorbic acid and the antioxidant potential (DPPH•, ABTS•+ method) of aqueous and aqueous-glycerine extracts from cherry (Prunus avium L), and sweet cherry (Prunus cerasus L.). The next stage of this work was the application of analysed extracts to cleaning preparations. The best antioxidant properties were demonstrated for the aqueous-glycerine extract of sweet cherry fruit, which also was exhibit the highest phenol and L-ascorbic acid content. After application of analysed extract aqueous-glycerine extract of sweet cherry fruit to the gel, it was showed high foam stability. The model formulations enriched with the aqueous extracts of cherries and sweet cherries had a higher foaming ability, compared to the formulations containing the aqueous-glycerine extracts. The addition of both cherry and sweet cherry fruit extracts to the formulations resulted in a decrease in viscosity, in comparison with the baseline sample. The highest decline in viscosity (15% in relation to the baseline sample) was noted for the aqueous extract of sweet cherry fruit. None of model formulations, containing analysed extracts, did not induce skin lesions in the epidermal patch tests. The results indicate that the extracts can be used as a valuable cosmetic raw material, which have strong antioxidant ability and at the same time did not adversely affecting the usable properties of the washing gel

Orbital ordering and one-dimensional magnetic correlation in vanadium spinel oxides AV2O4 (A = Zn, Mg, or Cd)

We present our theoretical results on the mechanism of two transitions in vanadium spinel oxides AAV2_2O4_4 (AA=Zn, Mg, or Cd) in which magnetic V cations constitute a geometrically-frustrated pyrochlore structure. We have derived an effective spin-orbital-lattice coupled model in the strong correlation limit of the multiorbital Hubbard model, and applied Monte Carlo simulation to the model. The results reveal that the higher-temperature transition is a layered antiferro-type orbital ordering accompanied by tetragonal Jahn-Teller distortion, and the lower-temperature transition is an antiferromagnetic spin ordering. The orbital order lifts the magnetic frustration partially, and induces spatial anisotropy in magnetic exchange interactions. In the intermediate phase, the system can be considered to consist of weakly-coupled antiferromagnetic chains lying in the perpendicular planes to the tetragonal distortion.Comment: 2 pages, 1 figure, submitted to SCES'0

Academic Ethos in the Times of the McDonaldisation of Universities – a Few Reflections on the Consequences of the Economisation and Financialisation of Science

Historically, universities not only played an educational and research role, but also created culture. It was also expressed by the academic ethos. At the same time, along with the advancement of the globalisation of economic processes, there is a tendency to apply the market approach in their case, which results in the economisation and financialisation of science. The clash of these two worlds, i.e. the academic ethos embedded in academic values and the economic approach to the functions of universities, is manifested, for example, in their McDonaldisation. As a consequence, universities focus on those aspects of their activities that are economically effective, including, for example, providing specialised educational services for student – clients. This process may result in universities losing their character, and thus becoming centres of creative inspiration and scientific discourse between scientists. Therefore, the aim of this study is to try to answer the following research questions: first, what are the consequences for universities of their economisation and financialisation, and, second, how their McDonaldisation affects the academic ethos. The study uses the dogmatic, legal and comparative methods.  Historically, universities not only played an educational and research role, but also created culture. The article presents economic and legal aspect of ownership, especially the ownership of land estate. Ownership is one of the essential categories which determine social and economic relations. Ownership is defined differently as a ownership in the legal sense and the economic ownership. However, it is obvious that the legal regulations in force can determine the economic relations in the field of ownership. This is the result of influence the legal regulations, which establish the ownership of production factors, on the economy regulating mechanism. Thus, it can be stated, that there is a specific dependency between the law and the economics, since the legal regulations determine the economic relations.W artykule przeanalizowano znaczenie terminu "własność" w polskim systemie prawnym. Omówiono również znaczenie własności w aspekcie ekonomicznym oraz związki między tymi dwoma aspektami pojęcia

Arithmetic duality for pp-adic pro-\'etale cohomology of analytic curves

We prove a Poincar\'e duality for arithmetic pp-adic pro-\'etale cohomology of smooth dagger curves over finite extensions of Qp{\mathbf Q}_p. We deduce it, via the Hochschild-Serre spectral sequence, from geometric comparison theorems combined with Tate and Serre dualities. The compatibility of all the products involved is checked via reduction to the ghost circle, for which we also prove a Poincar\'e duality (showing that it behaves like a proper smooth analytic variety of dimension 1/21/2). Along the way we study functional analytic properties of arithmetic pp-adic pro-\'etale cohomology and prove that the usual cohomology is nuclear Fr\'echet and the compactly supported one -- of compact type
