Possible discovery of the r-process characteristics in the abundances of metal-rich barium stars
We study the abundance distributions of a sample of metal-rich barium stars
provided by Pereira et al. (2011) to investigate the s- and r-process
nucleosynthesis in the metal-rich environment. We compared the theoretical
results predicted by a parametric model with the observed abundances of the
metal-rich barium stars. We found that six barium stars have a significant
r-process characteristic, and we divided the barium stars into two groups: the
r-rich barium stars (, [La/Nd]\,) and normal barium stars. The
behavior of the r-rich barium stars seems more like that of the metal-poor
r-rich and CEMP-r/s stars. We suggest that the most possible formation
mechanism for these stars is the s-process pollution, although their abundance
patterns can be fitted very well when the pre-enrichment hypothesis is
included. The fact that we can not explain them well using the s-process
nucleosynthesis alone may be due to our incomplete knowledge on the production
of Nd, Eu, and other relevant elements by the s-process in metal-rich and super
metal-rich environments (see details in Pereira et al. 2011).Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in A&
Compression of Atomic Phase Space Using an Asymmetric One-Way Barrier
We show how to construct asymmetric optical barriers for atoms. These
barriers can be used to compress phase space of a sample by creating a confined
region in space where atoms can accumulate with heating at the single photon
recoil level. We illustrate our method with a simple two-level model and then
show how it can be applied to more realistic multi-level atoms
Time-resolved PhotoEmission Spectroscopy on a Metal/Ferroelectric Heterostructure
In thin film ferroelectric capacitor the chemical and electronic structure of
the electrode/FE interface can play a crucial role in determining the kinetics
of polarization switching. We investigate the electronic structure of a
Pt/BaTiO3/SrTiO3:Nb capacitor using time-resolved photoemission spectroscopy.
The chemical, electronic and depth sensitivity of core level photoemission is
used to probe the transient response of different parts of the upper
electrode/ferroelectric interface to voltage pulse induced polarization
reversal. The linear response of the electronic structure agrees quantitatively
with a simple RC circuit model. The non-linear response due to the polarization
switch is demonstrated by the time-resolved response of the characteristic core
levels of the electrode and the ferroelectric. Adjustment of the RC circuit
model allows a first estimation of the Pt/BTO interface capacitance. The
experiment shows the interface capacitance is at least 100 times higher than
the bulk capacitance of the BTO film, in qualitative agreement with theoretical
predictions from the literature.Comment: 7 pages, 10 figures. Submitted to Phys. Rev.
FACETS: A cognitive business intelligence system
A cognitive decision support system called FACETS was developed and evaluated based on the situation retrieval (SR) model. The aim of FACETS is to provide decision makers cognitive decision support in ill-structured decision situations. The design and development of FACETS includes novel concepts, models, algorithms and system architecture, such as ontology and experience representation, situation awareness parsing, data warehouse query construction and guided situation presentation. The experiments showed that FACETS is able to play a significant role in supporting ill-structured decision making through developing and enriching situation awareness. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd
Magnetic resonance imaging of migrating neuronal precursors in normal and hypoxic-ischemic neonatal rat brains by intraventricular MPIO labeling
Proceedings of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society Conference, 2008, p. 363-366In this study, 10-day-old normal rats (n=6) and hypoxic-ischemic (H-I) neonatal rats (n=6) were injected with the micronsized iron oxide particles (MPIOs) into the anterior lateral ventricle. 2D and 3D high-spatial resolution MRI were performed with a 7T animal scanner 1 day before the MPIOs injection and hour 3, day 3, day 7 and day 14 after the MPIOs injection. Intraperitoneal injections of 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BrdU) were used to label newly produced cells, and were given thrice daily for 2 days before sacrifice. Immunohistochemistry and Prussian blue staining indicated that iron particles were inside the nestin+ and BrdU+ neural progenitor cells (NPCs), glial-fibrillary-acidic-protein-positive (GFAP+) astrocytes-like progenitor cells, and neuronal-nuclei-positive (NeuN+) mature neurons. Here we demonstrate that, in normal neonatal rat brain, the migrating pathway of the endogenous NPCs with MPIO is mainly along the rostral migratory stream to the olfactory bulb. In H-I neonatal rat brain, the migration of endogenous NPCs with MPIO is mainly towards the ischemic regions. Therefore, in vivo magnetic cell labeling of endogenous NPCs with MPIO and subsequently non-invasive, serial MRI monitoring should open up a new approach to probe into the mechanism of cell migration in the developmental brain under physiological and pathologic conditions. © 2008 IEEE.published_or_final_versio
Interface Electronic Structure in a Metal/Ferroelectric Heterostructure under Applied Bias
The effective barrier height between an electrode and a ferroelectric (FE)
depends on both macroscopic electrical properties and microscopic chemical and
electronic structure. The behavior of a prototypical electrode/FE/electrode
structure, Pt/BaTiO3/Nb-doped SrTiO3, under in-situ bias voltage is
investigated using X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy. The full band alignment is
measured and is supported by transport measurements. Barrier heights depend on
interface chemistry and on the FE polarization. A differential response of the
core levels to applied bias as a function of the polarization state is
observed, consistent with Callen charge variations near the interface.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures. Submitted to Phys. Rev.
Numerical Simulation of Solid-liquid Flow in Hydrocyclone
Hydrocyclone is widely used as the centrifugal separation equipment to separate, classify and concentrate the product. In this paper, the multiphase flow models of mixture and Euler-Euler are used to simulate the internal three-dimensional flow field of hydrocyclone. It is found that compared to the experiment, the mixture model is shown to have the best performance among the models of mixture, Euler-Euler and discrete phase for the separation simulation when the diameter of solid particle is less than 30 ÎĽm. Otherwise, the discrete phase model holds the best performance. Furthermore,
the field of static pressure, axial and tangential velocity, and volume fraction in the hydrocyclone is obtained by the mixture model. The outcome is very helpful to explain the separation procedure and optimize the hydrocyclone design
