    Prediction of Metabolic Syndrome for the Survival of Patients With Digestive Tract Cancer: A Meta-Analysis

    Background and Objectives: Growing evidence indicates that metabolic syndrome confers a differential risk for the development and progression of many types of cancer, especially in the digestive tract system. We here synthesized the results of published cohort studies to test whether baseline metabolic syndrome and its components can predict survival in patients with esophageal, gastric, or colorectal cancer.Methods: Literature retrieval, publication selection and data extraction were performed independently by two authors. Analyses were done using STATA software (version 14.1).Results: A total of 15 publications involving 54,656 patients were meta-analyzed. In overall analyses, the presence of metabolic syndrome was associated with a non-significant 19% increased mortality risk for digestive tract cancer (hazard ratio [HR]: 1.19; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.45 to 2.520.95 to 1.49, P = 0.130; I2: 94.8%). In stratified analyses, the association between metabolic syndrome and digestive tract cancer survival was statistically significant in prospective studies (HR: 1.64, 95% CI: 1.18 to 2.28), in studies involving postsurgical patients (HR: 1.42, 95% CI: 1.06 to 1.92), and in studies assessing cancer-specific survival (HR: 1.91, 95% CI: 1.45 to 2.52). Further meta-regression analyses indicated that age and smoking were potential sources of between-study heterogeneity (both P < 0.001). The shape of the Begg's funnel plot seemed symmetrical (Begg's test P = 0.945 and Egger's test P = 0.305).Conclusions: Our findings indicate that metabolic syndrome is associated with an increased risk of postsurgical digestive tract cancer-specific mortality. Continued investigations are needed to uncover the precise molecule mechanism linking metabolic syndrome and digestive tract cancer

    Prognostic Value of an Inflammation-Related Index in 6,865 Chinese Patients With Postoperative Digestive Tract Cancers: The FIESTA Study

    Objectives: We sought to determine the optimal cutting points for two inflammatory biomarkers, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), to assess their prognostic value in patients with postoperative digestive tract cancers overall and by cancer sites, and further to construct an inflammation-related index based on the two biomarkers and assess its predictive performance.Methods: Total 6,865 assessable patients with digestive tract cancers who underwent tumor resection were consecutively enrolled from Fujian Cancer Hospital between January 2000 and December 2010, including 2535/3012/1318 patients with esophageal/gastric/colorectal cancer. The latest follow-up (median: 44.9 months) ended in December 2015. Optimal cutting points were determined using survival tree analysis overall and by cancer sites.Results: Among all study patients, the optimal cutting points were 2.07 and 168.50 to define high and low NLR and PLR, respectively. High NLR (hazard ratio [HR]: 1.48, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.37–1.61) and high PLR (HR: 1.41, 95% CI: 1.29–1.53) were associated with a significantly increased risk for the mortality of digestive tract cancers as a whole. By cancer sites, effect-size estimates were comparable and statistically significant. Elevation over the selected optimal cutting points for both NLR and PLR was associated with 1.69-fold increased risk of cancer-specific mortality compared to patients with simultaneously low NLR and PLR among all study patients, and this association persisted by cancer sites, especially for gastric cancer.Conclusions: Our findings demonstrate that the preoperative integrated NLR and PLR, as an inflammation-related index, is a significant independent predictor for postoperative mortality in Chinese patients with digestive tract cancers both overall and by cancer sites

    Progress in Antarctic marine geophysical research by the Chinese Polar Program

    Marine geophysical survey by the Chinese National Antarctic Research Expedition (CHINARE) began with the first science expedition in 1984/1985, although only four cruises were performed in the vicinity of the Antarctic Peninsula between then and 1991/1992. After a 20 year hiatus, Antarctic marine geophysical research was relaunched by the Chinese Polar Environmental Comprehensive Investigation and Assessment Programs (known simply as the Chinese Polar Program) in 2011/2012. Integrated geophysical surveys have been carried out annually since, in Prydz Bay and the Ross Sea. During the last 5 years, we have acquired about 5500 km of bathymetric, gravimetric, and magnetic lines; more than 1800 km of seismic reflection lines; and data from several heat flow and Ocean Bottom Seismometer (OBS) stations. This work has deepened understandings of geophysical features and their implications for geological tectonics and glacial history in Antarctica and its surrounding seas. Compiled Antarctic Bouguer and Airy isostatic gravity anomalies show different features of tectonics between the East Antarctic stability and West Antarctic activity. Calculated magnetic anomalies, heat flow anomalies and lithospheric anisotropy offshore of Prydz Bay may imply high heat capacity of mantle shielded by the continental shelf lithosphere, but high heat dissipation of mantle due to the Cretaceous breakup of Gondwana along the continent and ocean transition (COT), where large sediment ridges would be brought about by the Oligocene ice sheet retreat and would enlarge free-air gravity anomalies. In the western Ross Sea, CHINARE seismic profiles indicate northern termination of the Terror Rift and deposition time of the grounding zone wedge in the northern JOIDES Basin

    Interaction Between Prediabetes and the ABO Blood Types in Predicting Postsurgical Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma-Specific Mortality: The FIESTA Study

    Background: We aimed to investigate the interaction between prediabetes and the ABO blood types in predicting esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC)-specific mortality by analysing data from the FIESTA study on normal/prediabetic patients with ESCC.Methods: Total 1,857 normal/prediabetic patients with ESCC who underwent three-field lymphadenectomy between January 2000 and December 2010 and survived hospitalization were analyzable, with follow-up beginning in 2000 and ending in 2015.Results: At the end of the follow-up, there were 1,161 survivors and 696 non-survivors. The follow-up time ranged from 0.5 to 180 months. The cumulative survival rates in normal patients were obviously better than in prediabetic patients. The cumulative survival rates were significantly higher in normal patients than in prediabetic patients for the blood types O and A (Log-rank test P < 0.05), while no significance was detected for the blood types B and AB. Adjusted risk estimates for ESCC-specific mortality for prediabetic patients relative to normal patients were statistically significant in the blood type B− group (hazard ratio [HR]: 1.71; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.33–2.20; P < 0.001), but not in the blood type B+ group (HR: 1.12; 95% CI: 0.77–1.64; P = 0.5544).Conclusions: Our findings indicate that prediabetes can predict the significant risk of ESCC-specific mortality in Chinese Han patients with the blood types O and A

    APEX Nuclease (Multifunctional DNA Repair Enzyme) 1 Gene Asp148Glu Polymorphism and Cancer Risk: A Meta-Analysis Involving 58 Articles and 48903 Participants

    <div><p>Background</p><p>Polymorphisms in the APEX nuclease (multifunctional DNA repair enzyme) 1 gene (<i>APEX1</i>) may be involved in the carcinogenesis by affecting DNA repair. We aimed to summarize available data on the association of the <i>APEX1</i> Asp148Glu (rs1130409) polymorphism with risk of multiple types of cancer via a meta-analysis.</p> <p>Methods and Results</p><p>In total, 58 qualified articles including 22,398 cancer patients and 26,505 controls were analyzed, and the data were extracted independently by two investigators. Analyses of the full data set indicated a marginally significant association of the <i>APEX1</i> Asp148Glu polymorphism with cancer risk under allelic (odds ratio (OR)=1.05; 95% confidence interval (95% CI): 0.99-1.11; P=0.071), dominant (OR=1.09; 95% CI: 1.01-1.17; P=0.028), and heterozygous genotypic (OR=1.08; 95% CI: 1.01-1.16; P=0.026) models, with significant heterogeneity and publication bias. In subgroup analyses by cancer type, with a Bonferroni corrected alpha of 0.05/6, significant association was observed for gastric cancer under both dominant (OR=1.74; 95% CI: 1.2-2.51; P=0.003) and heterozygous genotypic (OR=1.66; 95% CI: 1.2-2.31; P=0.002) models. In subgroup analysis by ethnicity, risk estimates were augmented in Caucasians, especially under dominant (OR=1.11; 95% CI: 1.0-1.24; P=0.049) and heterozygous genotypic (OR=1.11; 95% CI: 0.99-1.24; P=0.063) models. By study design, there were no significant differences between population-based and hospital-based studies. In subgroup analysis by sample size, risk estimates were remarkably overestimated in small studies, and no significance was reached in large studies except under the heterozygous genotypic model (OR=1.23; 95% CI: 1.06-1.43; P=0.006, significant at a Bonferroni corrected alpha of 0.05/2). By quality score, the risk estimates, albeit nonsignificant, were higher in low-quality studies than in high-quality studies. Further meta-regression analyses failed to identify any contributory confounders for the associated risk estimates.</p> <p>Conclusions</p><p>Our findings suggest that <i>APEX1</i> Asp148Glu polymorphism might be a genetic risk factor for the development of gastric cancer. Further investigations on large populations are warranted.</p> </div

    Fiber tip Michelson interferometer for temperature sensing based on polymer-filled suspended core fiber

    A low-cost fiber tip temperature sensor is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. It is based on the Michelson interferometer (MI) structure which is partially filled with polymer-UV glue in the suspended core fiber (SCF). Due to the greater thermal properties of UV glue compared with the silica optical fiber, the length of the inner cavity in the MI structure is susceptible to temperature modulation, resulting in the interference wavelength drift. Experimental results show that the sensor achieves a sensitivity of −164 pm/°C in the temperature range of 25–60 °C, and the sensor offers good wavelength and power stability at room temperature.
