    Possible higher order phase transition in large-NN gauge theory at finite temperature

    We analyze the phase structure of SU()SU(\infty) gauge theory at finite temperature using matrix models. Our basic assumption is that the effective potential is dominated by double-trace terms for the Polyakov loops. As a function of the temperature, a background field for the Polyakov loop, and a quartic coupling, it exhibits a universal structure: in the large portion of the parameter space, there is a continuous phase transition analogous to the third-order phase transition of Gross, Witten and Wadia, but the order of phase transition can be higher than third. We show that different confining potentials give rise to drastically different behavior of the eigenvalue density and the free energy.     Coupled Breathing Oscillations of Two-Component Fermion Condensates in Deformed Traps

    We investigate collective excitations coupled with monopole and quadrupole oscillations in two-component fermion condensates in deformed traps. The frequencies of monopole and dipole modes are calculated using Thomas-Fermi theory and the scaling approximation. When the trap is largely deformed, these collective motions are decoupled to the transverse and longitudinal breathing oscillation modes. As the trap approaches becoming spherical, however, they are coupled and show complicated behaviors.Comment: 18 pages and 8 figure

    Impact of Breast Cancer Awareness Month on Public Interest in the United States between 2012 and 2021: A Google Trends Analysis

    Simple Summary In this study, we quantified public awareness regarding breast cancer associated with Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM) in October using Google Trends data and a joinpoint regression analysis. We analyzed the impact of BCAM, Lung Cancer Awareness Month (LCAM), and Prostate Cancer Awareness Month (PCAM) on public awareness of the top three most common cancers in the U.S. from 2012 to 2021 using the relative search volume of Google Trends. The results imply that BCAM has successfully improved the public awareness of breast cancer in the U.S., while LCAM and PCAM had no impact on the awareness of lung and prostate cancers. BCAM could serve as a good example for organizations working on health observances or awareness campaigns. Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM) has a long history of over 30 years, established in 1985 to occur every October, and the National Breast Cancer Foundation now leads the operation. There have been no studies to evaluate the impact of the BCAM on public awareness of breast cancer. We analyzed the impact of BCAM on public awareness of breast cancer in the U.S. from 2012 to 2021 using the relative search volume (RSV) of Google Trends as a surrogate. We also analyzed the impact of Lung Cancer Awareness Month (LCAM) and Prostate Cancer Awareness Month (PCAM) on public awareness of lung and prostate cancer, respectively, to see differences in their effectiveness among the health observances for the top three most common cancers in the U.S. We performed a joinpoint regression analysis to identify statistically significant time points of a change in trend. There were joinpoints around BCAM for "Breast cancer" every year from 2012 to 2021, with a significant increase in the weekly RSVs from 21.9% to 46.7%. Except for 2013 and 2015 for "Lung cancer", when significant increases in the RSV at 1.8% and 1.2% per week were observed around LCAM, no joinpoints were noted around LCAM or PCAM. These results imply that BCAM has successfully improved the public awareness of breast cancer in the U.S. compared to other representative health observances, likely due to the effective involvement of non-medical industries, influencers affected by breast cancer, and an awareness symbol

    Investment under ambiguity with the best and worst in mind

    Recent literature on optimal investment has stressed the difference between the impact of risk and the impact of ambiguity - also called Knightian uncertainty - on investors' decisions. In this paper, we show that a decision maker's attitude towards ambiguity is similarly crucial for investment decisions. We capture the investor's individual ambiguity attitude by applying alpha-MEU preferences to a standard investment problem. We show that the presence of ambiguity often leads to an increase in the subjective project value, and entrepreneurs are more eager to invest. Thereby, our investment model helps to explain differences in investment behavior in situations which are objectively identical

    Antiferromagnetic Coupling of Pr0.9RE0.1Ni (RE = Tb, Dy, Ho) Single Crystals

    Magnetization and specific heat measurements were carried out on Pr0.9RE0.1Ni (RE = Tb,Dy, and Ho) single crystals. Spin rearrangements were observed along the c-axis ofsingle crystals with relatively small critical fields, Bc = 6.8, 4.0 and 2.6 T for RE = Tb,Dy and Ho, respectively. The magnetic phase transition temperatures, TM, were extracted from the specific heat data: TM = 22.7, 19.6 and 18.3 K with RE = Tb, Dy and Ho, respectively. The observed Bc values were used to estimate the heterogeneous (Pr-RE) exchange strength, and then calculate expected TM values, which were found to be close to the experimental ones. The present results of Bc and TM, together with the previous ones of Pr0.9Gd0.1Ni, were found to be consistent with the de Gennes rule
