    Gender Roles in Technology Product Advertisements in Library Trade Magazines

    Several studies on the depiction of gender roles in high tech product advertisements have concluded that women frequently are portrayed as passive users of technology while men are shown as masters of technological innovations. I examined ten issues from each of four library and information science trade magazines published in 2007-2008 to discover if advertisements for high tech products in them contain gender role stereotypes or if they more accurately reflect the use of technology by women librarians. Two titles – Library Journal and American Libraries – are more traditional library magazines, while Computers in Libraries and Online are newer publications that focus on the use of technologies in libraries and information science. A content analysis of the technology product advertisements revealed that women and men appeared in the ads with similar frequency and that both genders are portrayed as working with technology at comparable rates. The presentation included a description of the methodology and results, a selection of sample advertisements, and a discussion of the implications and questions raised by the study

    SAPHIRE 8 Volume 6 - Quality Assurance

    The Systems Analysis Programs for Hands-on Integrated Reliability Evaluations (SAPHIRE) Version 8 is a software application developed for performing a complete probabilistic risk assessment using a personal computer running the Microsoft Windowsâ„¢ operating system. SAPHIRE 8 is funded by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). The role of the INL in this project is that of software developer and tester. This development takes place using formal software development procedures and is subject to quality assurance (QA) processes. The purpose of this document is to describe how the SAPHIRE software QA is performed for Version 8, what constitutes its parts, and limitations of those processes. In addition, this document describes the Independent Verification and Validation that was conducted for Version 8 as part of an overall QA process

    β-Deuteration of N-nitrosoethylmethylamine causes a shift in DNA methylation from rat liver to esophagus

    While N-nitrosoethylmethylamine (NEMA) is carcinogenic primarily for the liver, its β-trideuterated derivative, N-nitroso([2-D3]ethyl)methylamine (NEMA-d3), also produces a high incidence of tumors in the esophagus. To determine whether this shift in organ specificity is associated with an altered pattern of DNA alkylation, [methyl-14C]- and [1-ethyl-14C]-labeled NEMA-d3 were administered to adult male Fischer 344 rats as a single i.p. dose (0.05 mmol/kg; 4 h survival). Levels of methylated and ethylated purines in the DNA of various organs were determined by radiochromatography on Sephasorb-HP columns. When compared to previous data using undeuterated NEMA, 7-niethylguanine levelswerefoundtobereducedby ∽30%inliverandkldney, but were 160% greater in esophagus. This resulted in a decrease in the 7-methylguanine ratio for liver/esophagus from 109 to 29. O6-Methlguanine was diminished in liver and kidney, but levels in lung and esophagus were too low for quantitative detection. Similarly, deuteration led to an 18% decrease of 7-ethylguanine In hepatic DNA. The observed increase in esophageal DNA methylation correlates with the increased carcinogenicity of NEMA-d3 relative to undeuterated NEMA in that organ. Since pharmacokinetic studies have shown that β-trideuteration of NEMA does not alter its bioavailability, the data suggest that the observed shift in target organ results from isotopically-induced changes in the balance among competing metabolic pathways in different rat tissue

    A synthetic mechanogenetic gene circuit for autonomous drug delivery in engineered tissues

    Mechanobiologic signals regulate cellular responses under physiologic and pathologic conditions. Using synthetic biology and tissue engineering, we developed a mechanically responsive bioartificial tissue that responds to mechanical loading to produce a preprogrammed therapeutic biologic drug. By deconstructing the signaling networks induced by activation of the mechanically sensitive ion channel transient receptor potential vanilloid 4 (TRPV4), we created synthetic TRPV4-responsive genetic circuits in chondrocytes. We engineered these cells into living tissues that respond to mechanical loading by producing the anti-inflammatory biologic drug interleukin-1 receptor antagonist. Chondrocyte TRPV4 is activated by osmotic loading and not by direct cellular deformation, suggesting that tissue loading is transduced into an osmotic signal that activates TRPV4. Either osmotic or mechanical loading of tissues transduced with TRPV4-responsive circuits protected constructs from inflammatory degradation by interleukin-1α.     Resection of the liver for colorectal carcinoma metastases - A multi-institutional study of long-term survivors

    In this review of a collected series of patients undergoing hepatic resection for colorectal metastases, 100 patients were found to have survived greater than five years from the time of resection. Of these 100 long-term survivors, 71 remain disease-free through the last follow-up, 19 recurred prior to five years, and ten recurred after five years. Patient characteristics that may have contributed to survival were examined. Procedures performed included five trisegmentectomies, 32 lobectomies, 16 left lateral segmentectomies, and 45 wedge resections. The margin of resection was recorded in 27 patients, one of whom had a positive margin, nine of whom had a less than or equal to 1-cm margin, and 17 of whom had a greater than 1-cm margin. Eighty-one patients had a solitary metastasis to the liver, 11 patients had two metastases, one patient had three metastases, and four patients had four metastases. Thirty patients had Stage C primary carcinoma, 40 had Stage B primary carcinoma, and one had Stage A primarycarcinoma. The disease-free interval from the time of colon resection to the time of liver resection was less than one year in 65 patients, and greater than one year in 34 patients. Three patients had bilobar metastases. Four of the patients had extrahepatic disease resected simultaneously with the liver resection. Though several contraindications to hepatic resection have been proposed in the past, five-year survival has been found in patients with extrahepatic disease resected simultaneously, patients with bilobar metastases, patients with multiple metastases, and patients with positive margins. Five-year disease-free survivors are also present in each of these subsets. It is concluded that five-year survival is possible in the presence of reported contraindications to resection, and therefore that the decision to resect the liver must be individualized. © 1988 American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons
