An approach to increasing the load-bearing capacity of drilled injection piles

    Get PDF
The problem of strengthening weak or overloaded bases is an important objective of underground space development. It is especially urgent if there are alternating weak layers in the base. The paper presents a practical geotechnical case of strengthening the overloaded base of a reinforced concrete foundation plate for a 25-storey residential building under construction. Combined soil piles that consist of Jet (type 1) soil concrete piles reinforced along the longitudinal axis with drilled injection piles made by electric discharge technology (EDT piles) are used as buried structures. This method of arrangement of a combined buried reinforced concrete structure is conditioned by the need to increase the load-bearing capacity of a pile in soil by two or more times

Consolidating Russia and Eurasia Antibiotic Resistance Data for 1992–2014 Using Search Engine

Background: The World Health Organization recognizes the antibiotic resistance problem as a major health threat in the 21st century. The paper describes an effort to fight it undertaken at the verge of two industries - healthcare and Data Science. One of the major difficulties in monitoring antibiotic resistance is low availability of comprehensive research data. Our aim is to develop a nation-wide antibiotic resistance database using Internet search and data processing algorithms using Russian language publications. Materials and methods: An interdisciplinary team built an intelligent Internet search filter to locate all publicly available research data on antibiotic resistance in Russia and Eurasia countries, extracted it, and collated it for analysis. A database was constructed using data from 850 original studies conducted at 153 locations in 12 countries between 1992 and 2014. The studies contained susceptibility and resistance rates of 156 microorganisms to 157 antibiotic drugs. Results: The applied search methodology was highly robust in that it yielded search precision of 58% versus 20% in a typical Internet search. It allowed finding and collating within the database the following data items (among many others): publication details including title, source, date, authors, etc.; study details: time period, locations, research organization, therapy area, etc.; microorganisms and antibiotic drugs included in the study along with prevalence values of resistant and susceptible strains, and numbers of isolates. The next stage in project development will try to validate the data by matching it to major benchmark studies; in addition, a panel of experts will be convened to evaluate the outcomes. Conclusions: The work provides a supplementary tool to national surveillance systems in antibiotic resistance, and consolidates fragmented research data available for 12 countries for a period of more than 20 years

ALGORITHM DESIGN FOR SHIP’S STEERING WITH SPECIFIED LIMITATIONS UNDER VARIOUS WEATHER CONDITIONS

The problems of developing the risk assessment methods to estimate the level of safety of the vessel under the current conditions on a planned route before staring the pilotage as well as to make the decision on the beginning or suspension of pilotage in order to increase the level of navigational safety are discussed in the paper. Moreover, the application of the research results will reduce the affect of the human factor in decision-making in tasks related to the sea-going vessel’s operation. The developed method for the quantitative assessment of navigational risks will improve the safety of ship’s pilotage. It can also be applied in the decision-making support systems for the navigator in case of collision avoidance actions. The research results presented in this paper can be used to create automatic control systems

Investigation by Cone Penetration Tests of Piled Foundations in Frozen Soil Maintained by Thermosyphons

Infrastructure built on permafrost may experience differential settlement and deformation due to permafrost degradation caused by many factors such as climate change, man-made impact, redistribution of snow cover, alteration of subsurface water flow, etc. Even a small change in the temperature of frozen soil can significantly alter (increase or decrease) the mechanical properties of the soil and hence the bearing capacity of piles. Modern Cone Penetration Testing (CPT) provides direct measurement of soil resistance and temperature in permafrost, thereby permitting the validation of pile capacity in permafrost conditions. An example application of CPT tests to diagnose the condition of piled foundations at the Salekhard College, Western Siberia, Russia, is described. The frozen soil is maintained by thermosyphons that are exposed in the crawl space below the building.  CPT tests were completed from within the crawl space to measure cone resistance qc [MPa], sleeve friction fs [kPa] and temperature T [°C] at several locations close to the thermosyphons and piles.  The data was obtained both within the zone of influence of the thermosyphons and at distance from the thermosyphons and piles, to provide “baseline” measurements. Based on this data; 1) the cooling effect of the thermosyphons was directly measured (soil temperature decrease), 2) the pile bearing capacity could be estimated and 3) pile capacity could be compared at different locations beneath the building.  In future projects it would be useful for reference during subsequent verification of foundation conditions to obtain data on the baseline soil properties and temperature conditions before installation of the piles and thermosyphons.

Along with other advanced geotechnical technologies for the exploration of underground space, electro-discharge technology (EDT technology) is one of the fundamental in the field of the construction of auger-injection microcircuits, as well as the construction transformation of the properties of foundation soils with weak physical and mechanical characteristics. At the same time, having significant differences compared to other methods of subsurface development of buildings and structures, the geotechnical EDT technology has a number of advantages, such as: 1) increased specific soil load-bearing capacity; 2) constructability of the auger piles in any geotechnical conditions; 3) possibility of geotechnical works performance under restricted conditions. As a basic structure for the development of new technologies, it has a large scientific research potential for the purposes of introducing it into modern underground construction
