Consumer perception of food products involving genetic modification: Results from a qualitative study in four Nordic countries
1. The present study addresses consumer acceptance of food products involving the use of different applications of genetic modification in four Nordic countries. Three food products were used as examples: hard cheese, hard candy, and salmon. Three types of applications of genetic modification were investigated: modification of the raw material, use of genetic modification in enzyme production, and direct use of genetically modified microorganisms. In addition, three levels of presence of the genetically modified material in the final product were investigated: not present, present, and present and living/able to function. 2. The results from consumer samples in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden are remarkably similar, showing a strong stability in consumer reactions to the use of genetic modification in food production in these four countries. 3. Consumer perception is characterised by a basic dichotomy of GM and non-GM products. Being non-GM is regarded as a major benefit in itself. When a product involves genetic modification, this elicits numerous negative assocations, of which the strongest ones are âunhealthyâ and âuncertainty.â 4. The level of presence of the genetically modified material in the final product has a clear impact on consumer acceptance. When the GM material is present and viable/able to function, acceptance is lowest. 5. The type of application of genetic modification has an impact on consumer acceptance as well, but it differs across products. Still, there is a clear tendency that acceptance of salmon products where the salmon itself was genetically modified was lowest among all products tested. 6. The consumer benefits which the application of GM brings about (e.g., improved taste, functional benefits, environmental benefits) are largely perceived, but cannot overcompensate for the negative associations to GM. In some cases, a supposed benefit (e.g., faster growth of salmon, leading to reduced energy costs) was actually perceived as a disadvantage. Benefits combining personal tangible benefits with societal relevance (e.g., a low calorie candy which can be consumed by people suffering from diabetes) may have most positive impact on consumer acceptance.Consumer behaviour; Buying behaviour; Food; Denmark; Norway; Sweden; Finland
Newton{Cartan Submanifolds and Fluid Membranes
We develop the geometric description of submanifolds in Newton--Cartan
spacetime. This provides the necessary starting point for a covariant spacetime
formulation of Galilean-invariant hydrodynamics on curved surfaces. We argue
that this is the natural geometrical framework to study fluid membranes in
thermal equilibrium and their dynamics out of equilibrium. A simple model of
fluid membranes that only depends on the surface tension is presented and,
extracting the resulting stresses, we show that perturbations away from
equilibrium yield the standard result for the dispersion of elastic waves. We
also find a generalisation of the Canham--Helfrich bending energy for lipid

GABAA Increases Calcium in Subventricular Zone Astrocyte-Like Cells Through L- and T-Type Voltage-Gated Calcium Channels
In the adult neurogenic subventricular zone (SVZ), the behavior of astrocyte-like cells and some of their functions depend on changes in intracellular Ca2+ levels and tonic GABAA receptor activation. However, it is unknown whether, and if so how, GABAA receptor activity regulates intracellular Ca2+ dynamics in SVZ astrocytes. To monitor Ca2+ activity selectively in astrocyte-like cells, we used two lines of transgenic mice expressing either GFP fused to a Gq-coupled receptor or DsRed under the human glial fibrillary acidic protein (hGFAP) promoter. GABAA receptor activation induced Ca2+ increases in 40â50% of SVZ astrocytes. GABAA-induced Ca2+ increases were prevented with nifedipine and mibefradil, blockers of L- and T-type voltage-gated calcium channels (VGCC). The L-type Ca2+ channel activator BayK 8644 increased the percentage of GABAA-responding astrocyte-like cells to 75%, suggesting that the majority of SVZ astrocytes express functional VGCCs. SVZ astrocytes also displayed spontaneous Ca2+ activity, the frequency of which was regulated by tonic GABAA receptor activation. These data support a role for ambient GABA in tonically regulating intracellular Ca2+ dynamics through GABAA receptors and VGCC in a subpopulation of astrocyte-like cells in the postnatal SVZ
Approximate square-root-time relaxation in glass-forming liquids
We present data for the dielectric relaxation of 43 glass-forming organic
liquids, showing that the primary (alpha) relaxation is often close to
square-root-time relaxation. The better an inverse power-law description of the
high-frequency loss applies, the more accurately is square-root-time relaxation
obeyed. These findings suggest that square-root-time relaxation is generic to
the alpha process, once a common view, but since long believed to be incorrect.
Only liquids with very large dielectric losses deviate from this picture by
having consistently narrower loss peaks. As a further challenge to the
prevailing opinion, we find that liquids with accurate square-root-time
relaxation cover a wide range of fragilities
Monitoring change in cycling with the Danish bike- traffic index.
The Danish Road Directorate has long experience in planning for cycling and the use of bicycle data and indexes. A national cycling index, a bike-traffic-index, was established in 1985, based on bike-flows continuously counted in locations all over the country. The number of counting stations included in the index has been increased over time to improve reliability and allow support for the development and assessment of policies aiming to maintain and further increase cycling. The index is partly fed by the Road Directorate and partly by the municipalities. With its current 61 counting stations in operation, the bike- traffic-index is still âthinâ compared to the equivalent car-traffic index, but it does provide consistent evidence on changes in cycling on Danish roads. The paper compares the bike-traffic-index with travel- survey data as indicators of changes in cycling, it presents the methodology and accuracy of the bike-traffic- index, and finally, it discusses its desirable improvements to increase accuracy and detect changes in cycling beyond the fluctuations in weather conditions that are generally important to cycling but also beyond policy reach
Breakdown of the classical description of a local system
We provide a straightforward demonstration of a fundamental difference
between classical and quantum mechanics for a single local system; namely the
absence of a joint probability distribution of the position and momentum
. Elaborating on a recently reported criterion by Bednorz and Belzig [Phys.
Rev. A {\bf 83}, 52113] we derive a simple criterion that must be fulfilled for
any joint probability distribution in classical physics. We demonstrate the
violation of this criterion using homodyne measurement of a single photon
state, thus proving a straightforward signature of the breakdown of a classical
description of the underlying state. Most importantly, the criterion used does
not rely on quantum mechanics and can thus be used to demonstrate
non-classicality of systems not immediately apparent to exhibit quantum
behavior. The criterion is directly applicable any system described by the
continuous canonical variables x and p, such as a mechanical or an electrical
oscillator and a collective spin of a large ensemble.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure
