Forcing and Velocity Correlations in a Vibrated Granular Monolayer
The role of forcing on the dynamics of a vertically shaken granular monolayer
is investigated. Using a flat plate, surprising negative velocity correlations
are measured. A mechanism for this anti-correlation is proposed with support
from both experimental results and molecular dynamics simulations. Using a
rough plate, velocity correlations are positive, and the velocity distribution
evolves from a gaussian at very low densities to a broader distribution at high
densities. These results are interpreted as a balance between stochastic
forcing, interparticle collisions, and friction with the plate.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Optical spectroscopy study of Nd(O,F)BiS2 single crystals
We present an optical spectroscopy study on F-substituted NdOBiS
superconducting single crystals grown using KCl/LiCl flux method. The
measurement reveals a simple metallic response with a relatively low screened
plasma edge near 5000 \cm. The plasma frequency is estimated to be 2.1 eV,
which is much smaller than the value expected from the first-principles
calculations for an electron doping level of x=0.5, but very close to the value
based on a doping level of 7 of itinerant electrons per Bi site as
determined by ARPES experiment. The energy scales of the interband transitions
are also well reproduced by the first-principles calculations. The results
suggest an absence of correlation effect in the compound, which essentially
rules out the exotic pairing mechanism for superconductivity or scenario based
on the strong electronic correlation effect. The study also reveals that the
system is far from a CDW instability as being widely discussed for a doping
level of x=0.5.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Oscillatory instability in a driven granular gas
We discovered an oscillatory instability in a system of inelastically
colliding hard spheres, driven by two opposite "thermal" walls at zero gravity.
The instability, predicted by a linear stability analysis of the equations of
granular hydrodynamics, occurs when the inelasticity of particle collisions
exceeds a critical value. Molecular dynamic simulations support the theory and
show a stripe-shaped cluster moving back and forth in the middle of the box
away from the driving walls. The oscillations are irregular but have a single
dominating frequency that is close to the frequency at the instability onset,
predicted from hydrodynamics.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Europhysics Letter
Model of coarsening and vortex formation in vibrated granular rods
Neicu and Kudrolli observed experimentally spontaneous formation of the
long-range orientational order and large-scale vortices in a system of vibrated
macroscopic rods. We propose a phenomenological theory of this phenomenon,
based on a coupled system of equations for local rods density and tilt. The
density evolution is described by modified Cahn-Hilliard equation, while the
tilt is described by the Ginzburg-Landau type equation. Our analysis shows
that, in accordance to the Cahn-Hilliard dynamics, the islands of the ordered
phase appear spontaneously and grow due to coarsening. The generic vortex
solutions of the Ginzburg-Landau equation for the tilt correspond to the
vortical motion of the rods around the cores which are located near the centers
of the islands.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
The phylogeny of Galerucinae (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) and the performance of mitochondrial genomes in phylogenetic inference compared to nuclear rRNA genes
With efficient sequencing techniques, full mitochondrial genomes are rapidly replacing other widely used markers, such as the nuclear rRNA genes, for phylogenetic analysis but their power to resolve deep levels of the tree remains controversial. We studied phylogenetic relationships of leaf beetles (Chrysomelidae) in the tribes Galerucini and Alticini (root worms and flea beetles) based on full mitochondrial genomes (103 newly sequenced), and compared their performance to the widely sequenced nuclear rRNA genes (full 18S, partial 28S). Our results show that: (i) the mitogenome is phylogenetically informative from subtribe to family level, and the per-nucleotide contribution to nodal support is higher than that of rRNA genes, (ii) the Galerucini and Alticini are reciprocally monophyletic sister groups, if the classification is adjusted to accommodate several ‘problematic genera’ that do not fit the dichotomy of lineages based on the presence (Alticini) or absence (Galerucini) of the jumping apparatus, and (iii) the phylogenetic results suggest a new classification system of Galerucini with eight subtribes: Oidina, Galerucina, Hylaspina, Metacyclina, Luperina, Aulacophorina, Diabroticina and Monoleptina
PLM-IPE: A Pixel-Landmark Mutual Enhanced Framework for Implicit Preference Estimation
In this paper, we are interested in understanding how customers perceive fashion recommendations, in particular when observing a proposed combination of garments to compose an outfit. Automatically understanding how a suggested item is perceived, without any kind of active engagement, is in fact an essential block to achieve interactive applications. We propose a pixel-landmark mutual enhanced framework for implicit preference estimation, named PLM-IPE, which is capable of inferring the user's implicit preferences exploiting visual cues, without any active or conscious engagement. PLM-IPE consists of three key modules: pixel-based estimator, landmark-based estimator and mutual learning based optimization. The former two modules work on capturing the implicit reaction of the user from the pixel level and landmark level, respectively. The last module serves to transfer knowledge between the two parallel estimators. Towards evaluation, we collected a real-world dataset, named SentiGarment, which contains 3,345 facial reaction videos paired with suggested outfits and human labeled reaction scores. Extensive experiments show the superiority of our model over state-of-the-art approaches
Towards organizing health knowledge on community-based health services
Online community-based health services accumulate a huge amount of unstructured health question answering (QA) records at a continuously increasing pace. The ability to organize these health QA records has been found to be effective for data access. The existing approaches for organizing information are often not applicable to health domain due to its domain nature as characterized by complex relation among entities, large vocabulary gap, and heterogeneity of users. To tackle these challenges, we propose a top-down organization scheme, which can automatically assign the unstructured health-related records into a hierarchy with prior domain knowledge. Besides automatic hierarchy prototype generation, it also enables each data instance to be associated with multiple leaf nodes and profiles each node with terminologies. Based on this scheme, we design a hierarchy-based health information retrieval system. Experiments on a real-world dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of our scheme in organizing health QA into a topic hierarchy and retrieving health QA records from the topic hierarchy
