On the electrooxidation of glucose on gold: Towards an electrochemical glucaric acid production as value-added chemical
The electrocatalytic oxidation of glucose to value-added chemicals, such as glucaric acid, has gathered increased interest in recent years. Glucose oxidation is a promising process which has the potential to contribute to establishing renewable resources as alternatives to fossil carbon sources. Herein, we present rotating disk electrode (RDE) studies on polycrystalline gold surfaces and subsequent Koutecký-Levich analysis as a benchmark to expand the understanding of reaction kinetics and competition between glucose, reaction intermediates and OH− at the catalyst surface. Based on the obtained results it follows that the glucose oxidation reaction (GOR) is predominately mass-transport controlled. Combining electrochemical studies and Raman spectroscopy, it is shown that increasing glucose concentrations lead to a delayed oxidation of the gold catalyst surface, presumably by increased consumption rates of Au-hydroxide species
A Deep Photometric Look at Two of Andromeda's Dwarf Spheroidals: X and XVII
We use deep wide-field photometry from the Large Binocular Camera to study
the stellar and structural properties of the recently discovered Andromeda X
and Andromeda XVII (And X and And XVII) dwarf galaxies. Using the mean apparent
magnitude of the horizontal branch (HB), we derive distances of 621 +- 20 kpc
to And X and 734+- 23 kpc to And XVII, closer by >60 kpc than the previous
estimates which were based on red giant branch (RGB) observations. Thus our
results warrant against the use of the RGB tip method for determining distances
to systems with sparsely populated RGBs, and show how crucial HB observations
are in obtaining accurate distances in systems such as these. We find that And
X is a relatively faint (MV = -7.36), highly elongated (e = 0.48) system at a
distance of 174 +- 62 kpc from Andromeda. And XVII is brighter (MV = -8.61)
with an M31-centric distance of 73 kpc which makes it one of the closest
satellites to Andromeda. Both galaxies are metal-poor: we derive =-2.2
for And X, while And XVII shows = -2.0, consistent with the relation
of higher luminosity dwarfs being more metal- rich. Additionally, both galaxies
show considerable intrinsic spreads in metallicity (0.2 and 0.3 dex for And X
and And XVII respectively), consistent with multiple stellar populations.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure
Impact of percutaneous mitral valve repair using the MitraClip™ system on ventricular arrhythmias and ICD therapies
Transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER) using the MitraClip™ device has been established as a suitable alternative to mitral valve surgery in patients with severe mitral regurgitation (MR) and high or prohibitive surgical risk. Only limited information regarding the impact of TEER on ventricular arrhythmias (VA) has been reported. The aim of the present study was to assess the impact of TEER using the MitraClip(TM) device on the burden of VA and ICD (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator) therapies. Among 600 MitraClip(TM) implantations performed in our clinic between September 2009 and October 2018, we identified 86 patients with successful TEER and an active implantable cardiac device (pacemaker, ICD, CRT-P/D (Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy-Pacemaker/Defibrillator)) eligible for retrospective VA analyses. These patients presented with mainly functional MR (81.4%) and severely reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (mean LVEF 22.1% ± 10.3%). The observation period comprised 456 ± 313 days before and 424 ± 287 days after TEER. The burden of ventricular arrhythmias (sustained ventricular tachycardia (sVT) and ventricular fibrillation (VF)) was significantly reduced after TEER (0.85 ± 3.47 vs. 0.43 ± 2.03 events per patient per month, p = 0.01). Furthermore, the rate of ICD therapies (anti-tachycardia pacing (ATP) and ICD shock) decreased significantly after MitraClip(TM) implantation (1.0 ± 3.87 vs. 0.32 ± 1.41, p = 0.014). However, reduction of VA burden did not result in improved two-year survival in this patient cohort with severely reduced LVEF. Electrochemical Reduction of CO 2 on Au Electrocatalysts in a Zero‐Gap, Half‐Cell Gas Diffusion Electrode Setup: a Systematic Performance Evaluation and Comparison to an H‐cell Setup
Based on H-cell measurements, gold (Au) is one of the most selective catalysts for the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) to CO. To ensure a high dispersion, typically small Au nanoparticles (NPs) are used as a catalyst. However, the preparation of small Au NPs based on conventional synthesis methods often requires the use of surfactants such as polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). Here, a systematic evaluation of the performance of laser-generated, surfactant-free Au NPs for the CO2RR in a gas diffusion electrode (GDE) setup was presented and the results were compared to investigations in an H-cell configuration. The GDE setup supplied a continuous CO2 stream at the electrode-electrolyte interface to circumvent CO2 mass transport limitations encountered in conventional H-cells. The influence of the catalyst loading and the effect of PVP were investigated. By comparing the two screening methods, that is GDE and H-cell measurements, it was shown that the performance of the same catalyst could be substantially different in the two environments. In the GDE setup without liquid electrolyte-catalyst interface a higher reaction rate, but lower faradaic efficiency was determined. Independent of the setup, the presence of PVP favoured the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, in the GDE setup PVP was more detrimental for the performance than in the H-cell
The enigmatic pair of dwarf galaxies Leo IV and Leo V: coincidence or common origin?
We have obtained deep photometry in two 1x1 degree fields covering the close
pair of dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSph) Leo IV and Leo V and part of the area
in between. We find that both systems are significantly larger than indicated
by previous measurements based on shallower data and also significantly
elongated. With half-light radii of r_h=4'.6 +- 0'.8 (206 +- 36 pc) and
r_h=2'.6 +- 0'.6 (133 +- 31 pc), respectively, they are now well within the
physical size bracket of typical Milky Way dSph satellites. Their ellipticities
of epsilon ~0.5 are shared by many faint (M_V>-8) Milky Way dSphs. The large
spatial extent of our survey allows us to search for extra-tidal features with
unprecedented sensitivity. The spatial distribution of candidate red giant
branch and horizontal branch stars is found to be non-uniform at the ~3 sigma
level. This substructure is aligned along the direction connecting the two
systems, indicative of a possible `bridge' of extra-tidal material. Fitting the
stellar distribution with a linear Gaussian model yields a significance of 4
sigma for this overdensity, a most likely FWHM of ~16 arcmin and a central
surface brightness of ~32 mag arcsec^{-2}. We investigate different scenarios
to explain the close proximity of Leo IV and Leo V and the possible tidal
bridge between them. Orbit calculations demonstrate that they are unlikely to
be remnants of a single disrupted progenitor, while a comparison with
cosmological simulations shows that a chance collision between unrelated
subhalos is negligibly small. Leo IV and Leo V could, however, be a bound
`tumbling pair' if their combined mass exceeds 8 +- 4 x 10^9 M_sun. The
scenario of an internally interacting pair appears to be the most viable

Safety Evaluation of a Medical Congress Held During the COVID-19 Pandemic-A Prospective Cohort
Objectives: During the COVID-19 pandemic, few scientific congresses have been held on-site. We prospectively evaluated the safety concept of the congress of the Swiss Societies of Infectious Diseases and Hospital Hygiene. Methods: The congress was held in Geneva (Switzerland) while local COVID-19 incidence (with SARS-CoV-2 wild type circulating) was 65/100,000 population (September 2020). A rigorous safety concept was implemented. Congress attendees filled out a questionnaire to assess risk perception, exposures, symptoms and diagnoses of SARS-CoV-2 before, during and after the congress. Dried blood spots were taken on-site and 4 weeks later to detect SARS-CoV-2 seroconversions. Results: Of 365 congress attendees, 196 (54%) either answered the questionnaire (N = 150) or provided baseline and follow-up blood samples (N = 168). None of the participants reported a positive PCR in the 2 weeks after the congress. Five of 168 (3%) participants were seropositive at follow-up, all of which had already been positive at baseline. Conclusion: Findings indicate that congresses with a rigorous safety concept may take place, even in areas with moderately-high COVID-19 activity. Whether this holds true in vaccinated populations and with more transmissible viral variants circulating remains unclear
