    Most patients want to maintain complete control of their choice in their healthcare decisions to the very end of life. However, according to Bern-Klug and Byram’s (2017) study, less than 25% of Americans complete advanced directives. Despite legislation that mandates healthcare providers ask patients if they have an advanced directive, most healthcare providers do not have advanced directive discussions with their patients (Spoelhof & Elliott, 2012). The purpose of this project was to develop multifocal interventions that would increase the number of conversations healthcare providers have with their patients over the age of 18 in the primary care setting and the number of patients that complete an advanced directive. The ultimate goal of this project was for patients to have a voice in their end-of-life healthcare decisions, followed by an advanced directive process replication across clinics in the state and nation

    Synthesis of the C(1)-C(9) fragment of disorazole C1 and novel heterocyclic analogues

    A highly convergent strategy for the synthesis of the antitubulin polyketide disorazole C1 is proposed based around the alkyne precursor I, featuring a novel Evans-Tishchenko/ring closing alkyne metathesis approach. Due to the inherent symmetry of the molecule this retrosynthesis leads to two fragments: a β- hydroxyketone II and the oxazole C(1)-(9) fragment III. A review of previous syntheses of disorazole C1 and established structure activity relationships (SARs) highlights a gap in current knowledge relating to the role of the oxazole in tubulin binding. Therefore, the focus of this research has been towards developing new routes for the synthesis of the C(1)-C(9) fragment that can be adapted to the synthesis of heterocyclic analogues to further establish the SAR of disorazole C1. Chapter 2 focuses on a disconnection at the C(5)-C(6) bond and a novel synthesis of the racemic C(1)-C(9) fragment has been achieved via a lithiation of methyl 2- methyl-1,3-oxazole-4-carboxylate and coupling to aldehyde V. First generation asymmetric routes to the C(1)-C(9) fragment centred on i. a biomimetic amino acid condensation route via an oxazoline intermediate based on the precedent of Meyers et al. and ii. a C(4)-C(5) disconnection approach based around the epoxide VII; are discussed in chapter 3. A second generation C(4)-C(5) disconnection centred on the novel tosylate VIII is discussed in chapter 4. Attempts to synthesise the parent C(1)- C(9) oxazole fragment using the tosylate VIII via i. a palladium catalysed C-H activation of ethyl 4-oxazole carboxylate and ii. lithiation of oxazole are reported. Coupling of fragment VIII (X = OTs) with ethyl 1H-pyrazole-4-carboxylate and a CuAAC coupling of the azide derived from tosylate VIII with methyl propiolate has allowed the successful completion of the synthesis of pyrazole and triazole analogues of this fragment

    Flight of the Condors: Evidence on the Performance of Condor Option Spreads in Australia

    This paper examines whether superior nominal and risk-adjusted returns can be generated using condor option spread strategies on a large capitalized Australian stock. Monthly Commonwealth Bank of Australia Ltd (CBA) condor option spreads are constructed from 2012 to 2015 and their returns established. Standard and alternative measures are used to determine the nominal and risk-adjusted performance of the spreads. The results show that the short put condor spread produces superior nominal and risk-adjusted returns, but seemingly underperformed when the upside potential ratio was taken into consideration. The long iron condor spread also offers reasonable returns across both performance metrics. On the other hand, the short call condor, long call condor, short iron condor and long put condor spreads did not perform as well on a nominal and risk-adjusted return basis. The results suggest that constructing spreads on the foundation of volatility preferences could be a driver of performance for condor option spreads strategies. For instance, short volatility condor spreads with negatively skewed return distribution shapes appear to add value, while long volatility condor spreads with positively skewed return distribution shapes seem to be less attractive over the sample period. Overall, condor option spreads demonstrate high risk-return profiles, offer versatility in their construction and intended pay-off outcomes, create value in some instances and can be executed across varying market conditions. It is suggested that risk averse investors best avoid condor option spreads, while those with above average risk tolerances may be well suited to the strategies, particularly short volatility-driven condor spreads

    Contribution of smartpens to design studies in capturing design process

    The paper focuses on technical and methodological aspects of using smartpens to capture sketching activities in the idea generation stage. Aiming to consider a more effective way to capture designers’ decisions, moves, verbal and non-verbal cues; the paper attempts to provide a critical appraisal of how smartpen-based recording system are able to improve small-scale observational studies’ rigorousness and increases richness of data. Comparison of conventional pen-and-video and smartpen devices are illustrated, by conducting two think-aloud design sessions using both mechanisms. Advantages and disadvantages will be analysed to provide balance views of the two tools. In general, both are able to capture sequences of thoughts, including moving through one page to another. Preliminary findings show that smartpens are somewhat superior in terms of: obtaining unobstructed views of the sketching process as result of participants’ hand/shadow or glare, pencast (replayed video) aids exploration of design strategies investigation, auto-synchronised thinking aloud (verbal) and sketching (actions) foster the effectiveness of study, minimal use of a single recording device and also possibly promote exploration in shading, textual aids, contextual aids and other cues of sketches. However, pen-and-video tools are more efficient at capturing hand gestures. Some recommendations for future studies are also suggested
