    Remembrance

    Get PDF
The artwork in the collection, “Remembrance,” is a collection of three-dimensional paper toys inspired by the culture of Dong Son civilization. The study was intended as an investigation into a mysterious, once-lost kingdom that flourished in the northern delta region of Vietnam. The designs and art motifs found on bronze artifacts from Dong Son have been scrutinized, then compared with stories in Vietnamese legends to decipher their hidden message and symbolism. I collected and translated the design motifs digitally as part of the creative process before analyzing their philosophies and intentions to not only introduce the culture but also accurately represent the spirits of the Vietnamese Dong Son civilians. The paper toys were envisioned as embodiments of semi-mythical figures and Dong Son philosophical concepts. Together, the twelve characters represent Dong Son\u27s messengers. As the audience interacted with the toys, I envisioned the audience contemplating the beautiful motifs and actively creating their own adventures into the lost world of civilization Dong Son

Monte Carlo Simulation of Correction Factors for Neutron Activation Foils

In the conventional neutron activation analysis, the elemental concentrations are normally determined from the comparison ratios between the measured specific activities of the sample and the standard reference material. An advantage in the comparison ratio method is that the systematic error due to neutron self-shielding and multi-scattering effects is canceled out, and the correction factors can be ignored but the preparation of reference standards to match the same conditions with those of various samples is the main difficulty. In the modern trend of neutron activation analysis, the K0-standardization method has been developed and applied in almost all the NAA laboratories. An important research work in the procedure under this method is the characteristic information regarding the neutron source, such as thermal and epithermal neutron fluxes, and epithermal spectrum shape-factor. These neutron spectrum parameters are experimentally determined by using the activation foils, in which the corrections for all neutron effects cause systematic errors should be taken into account. Using the MCNP5 code, a well-known Monte Carlo simulation program, the results of correction factors of thermal, epithermal and resonance neutron self-shielding factors for Au, Co, Mn, W activation foils are presented in this chapter

Understanding first year university students’ passivity via their attitudes and language behaviors towards answering questions in class

Learning styles and learning strategies play a key role in learners’ success and autonomy in language learning. However, the majority of research in this area is carried out in foreign context rather than locally. Thus, many false assumptions have been made about Asian learning styles in general and Vietnamese learners in particular, i.e. they are passive and group-oriented learners, and they tend to learn by rote and memorize knowledge. In an attempt to find out if Vietnamese first year university non-English majored learners are passive or active, the study investigates their attitudes and language behaviors towards answering questions in class. The major findings from valid questionnaires responded by 90 students from five different technology-grouped departments reveal that Vietnamese students are not passive at all and the reasons why they appear passive are related to their shyness and face-saving attitudes. No statistically significant association was found between students’ personality and their passivity in the classroom

SOURCE APPORTIONMENT OF VOCS BY RECEPTOR MODELLING IN AN URBAN SITE IN HA NOI

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are atmospheric pollutants of concern because of the health effect including carcinogenic risk of some of their species and the contribution in the formation of tropospheric ozone. The levels of VOCs in Hanoi were demonstrated to be higher than neighboring countries by previous research. The ozone potential formation (OFP) of VOCs was also some folds higher than others. Among transportation sources, VOCs were proved to be mainly emitted from motorbikes. The contribution percentages of transportation and other sources such as industrial, biomass burning sources are still remained unknown. In this research we applied chemical mass balance (CMB) receptor modelling to determine VOCs source apportionment. One week VOCs observation data at Hanoi University of Science and Technology in June 2017 was applied for investigation. Fourteen VOC species among 55 of which were applied for CMB modelling. Transportation and biomass burning source profiles were developed by monitoring in this study. Four other source profiles, namely gasoline evaporation, industrial production, cooking and paint that were compiled or calculated from previous studies. The results showed that the main sources of VOCs were vehicular emission, biomass burning, and gasoline evaporation contributing 37 %, 21 % and 20 % for VOCs levels, respectively. Other sources contributed for the leftover. The results can support to initiate policy for future control of VOCs

APPLICATION OF PRINCIPLE COMPONENT ANALYSIS TO BUILD PROVINCIAL ECO-EFFICIENCY INDEX FOR BINH DUONG PROVINCE FROM 2001-2012

    Get PDF
Based on a proposed concept of Regional Eco-Efficiency of Zhou Zhenfeng, a set of indicators for assessing, eco-efficiency of provincial level has been conducted. Set of indicators included 26 indicators, and was divided into 3 groups: Socio-Economic Development Index (SDI) (9 indicators); Resources Consumption Index (RCI) (7 indicators) and Environmental Pressure index (EPrI) (10 indicators). Principle component analysis (PCA) was used to assess Eco-efficiency Synthetic Index (ESI) of Binh Duong province in the 2001-2012. Results shown that the ESI of Binh Duong province has been clearly improving from 2001-2012. RCI and EPrI respectively had a significant correlation with SDI. Results also have been shown that the industrialization generated waste and if the pollution control solution is not effectively so environmental pressure is continuously increase and degrade the environment

Saprochaete Capitata Infection in an 80–Year Old Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Patient: A Case Report

BACKGROUND: The fungal disease caused by invasive fungus Saprochaete capitata is becoming an increasingly popular infection. Fungal pathogens mainly occur in patients with immunocompromised disorders such as hematologic malignancies, acute myeloid leukemia, transplant patients. CASE REPORT: In this study, we presented a COPD patient infected with S. capitata. At the first check, the patient showed cough, dyspnea, chest pain on both sides. The clinical laboratory test result was characterized with high White blood cell (12.8 G/L), HIV negative. The X ray showed bronchitis and emphysema. Bronchoscopy illustrated bronchial mucositis. CT scanner demonstrated pneumonia with fuzzy nodular lesions and thick interstitial organization in both lungs. The patient was treated with ciprofloxacin 800 mg/day; cefuroxime 2250 mmg/day. However, the fever appeared 2 weeks thereafter. The S. capitata was discovered in the bronchial fluid. The patient was then treated with fluconazole 400 mg/day for 14 days. At the end of treatment, all signs and symptoms of S. capitata infection disappeared and the patient recovered. CONCLUSION: This case study showed that S. capitata infection can occur in the COPD patients and fluconazole is a pertinent drug for treatment of the infection

New record for Asia-Pacific of Protoperidinium anomaloplaxum (Peridiniales, Dinophyceae) from Vietnamese waters

Minusculum (Lebour) Balech is one of four subgenera of the genus Protoperidinium Bergh 1881. Only five species of this subgenus have been discovered worldwide, most of which are distributed in cold waters. In this study, Protoperidinium anomaloplaxum (Balech) Balech is reported from Vietnam and thus for the first time from Asia-Pacific waters. This species is illustrated with line drawing, light and scanning electron microscopic photographs and described details of the ornamentation of the thecal plates as well as its geographic distribution.
