Social-aware Opportunistic Routing Protocol based on User's Interactions and Interests
Nowadays, routing proposals must deal with a panoply of heterogeneous
devices, intermittent connectivity, and the users' constant need for
communication, even in rather challenging networking scenarios. Thus, we
propose a Social-aware Content-based Opportunistic Routing Protocol, SCORP,
that considers the users' social interaction and their interests to improve
data delivery in urban, dense scenarios. Through simulations, using synthetic
mobility and human traces scenarios, we compare the performance of our solution
against other two social-aware solutions, dLife and Bubble Rap, and the
social-oblivious Spray and Wait, in order to show that the combination of
social awareness and content knowledge can be beneficial when disseminating
data in challenging networks

Supporting Story Synthesis: Bridging the Gap between Visual Analytics and Storytelling
Visual analytics usually deals with complex data and uses sophisticated algorithmic, visual, and interactive techniques. Findings of the analysis often need to be communicated to an audience that lacks visual analytics expertise. This requires analysis outcomes to be presented in simpler ways than that are typically used in visual analytics systems. However, not only analytical visualizations may be too complex for target audience but also the information that needs to be presented. Hence, there exists a gap on the path from obtaining analysis findings to communicating them, which involves two aspects: information and display complexity. We propose a general framework where data analysis and result presentation are linked by story synthesis, in which the analyst creates and organizes story contents. Differently, from the previous research, where analytic findings are represented by stored display states, we treat findings as data constructs. In story synthesis, findings are selected, assembled, and arranged in views using meaningful layouts that take into account the structure of information and inherent properties of its components. We propose a workflow for applying the proposed framework in designing visual analytics systems and demonstrate the generality of the approach by applying it to two domains, social media, and movement analysis
Coherent coupling between surface plasmons and excitons in semiconductor nanocrystals
We present an experimental demonstration of strong coupling between a surface
plasmon propagating on a planar silver substrate, and the lowest excited state
of CdSe nanocrystals. Variable-angle spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements
demonstrated the formation of plasmon-exciton mixed states, characterized by a
Rabi splitting of 82 meV at room temperature. Such a coherent
interaction has the potential for the development of plasmonic non-linear
devices, and furthermore, this system is akin to those studied in cavity
quantum electrodynamics, thus offering the possibility to study the regime of
strong light-matter coupling in semiconductor nanocrystals at easily accessible
experimental conditions.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figure
Suppression of Intensity Fluctuations in Free Space High-Speed Optical Communication Based on Spectral Encoding of a Partially Coherent Beam
A new concept of a free-space, high-speed (Gbps) optical communication system
based on spectral encoding of radiation from a broadband pulsed laser is
developed. It is shown that, in combination with the use of partially coherent
laser beams and a relatively slow photosensor, scintillations can be suppressed
by orders of magnitude for distances of more than 10 km. We also consider the
spectral encoding of radiation from a LED as a gigabit rate solution of the
"last mile" problem and rapid-deployment systems for disaster recovery.Comment: 16 pages, 2 figure
Resolution in Linguistic Propositional Logic based on Linear Symmetrical Hedge Algebra
The paper introduces a propositional linguistic logic that serves as the
basis for automated uncertain reasoning with linguistic information. First, we
build a linguistic logic system with truth value domain based on a linear
symmetrical hedge algebra. Then, we consider G\"{o}del's t-norm and t-conorm to
define the logical connectives for our logic. Next, we present a resolution
inference rule, in which two clauses having contradictory linguistic truth
values can be resolved. We also give the concept of reliability in order to
capture the approximative nature of the resolution inference rule. Finally, we
propose a resolution procedure with the maximal reliability.Comment: KSE 2013 conferenc
Survey of J=0,1 mesons in a Bethe-Salpeter approach
The Bethe-Salpeter equation is used to comprehensively study mesons with
J=0,1 and equal-mass constituents for quark masses from the chiral limit to the
b-quark mass. The survey contains masses of the ground states in all
corresponding J^{PC} channels including those with "exotic" quantum numbers.
The emphasis is put on each particular state's sensitivity to the low- and
intermediate-momentum, i.e., long-range part of the strong interaction.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure
Relativistic Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory with Density Dependent Meson-Nucleon Couplings
Relativistic Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (RHFB) theory with density-dependent
meson-nucleon couplings is presented. The integro-differential RHFB equations
are solved by expanding the different components of the quasi-particle spinors
in the complete set of eigen-solutions of the Dirac equations with Woods-Saxon
potentials. Using the finite-range Gogny force D1S as an effective interaction
in the pairing channel, systematic RHFB calculations are performed for Sn
isotopes and N=82 isotones. It is demonstrated that an appropriate description
of both mean field and pairing effects can be obtained within RHFB theory with
finite range Gogny pairing forces. Better systematics are also found in the
regions from the stable to the neutron-rich side with the inclusion of Fock
terms, especially in the presence of -tensor couplings.Comment: 11 pages, 2 tables and 4 figure
