Among the many factors that increase students’ achievement in the mastery of foreign languages, including English, are motivation and use of language learning strategies. Previous studies by a range of researchers have identified these two elements as the most important in obtaining success in language learning. This study carried out on 152 university students, roughly equal in gender, studying at a university in Can Tho, Vietnam, sought to discover the relationships between these two factors within the Vietnamese language learning context. In particular, the study sought to 1) discover which of two types of motivation, intrinsic and extrinsic, is most prevalent among the students studied; 2) their use of language learning strategies; 3) reveals the relationship between students' motivation and use of language learning strategies; and 4) describe the differences in their use of language learning strategies based on whether their motivation was high, medium or low. Research instruments included Schmidt et al.'s Questionnaire on Motivation in Learning English, and Oxford's Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (both modified for the Vietnamese language learning context and translated into Vietnamese), plus an interview with 18 of the students to gain greater insight into the answers they gave on the questionnaires. Results were obtained using standard deviations and t-tests. They showed that Vietnamese university students are mainly extrinsically motivated; that all strategies were used at least at a medium level, amidst other fluctuations; and that those metacognitive strategies are most prevalent among medium and high motivated students but affective strategies are most common among low motivation students. Recommendations flowing from these results are that teachers should prioritize the formal teaching of learning strategies and should attempt to increase intrinsic motivation by putting greater emphasis on making language learning fun and relevant to the students' interests and passions. Risk management of variable annuity portfolios using machine learning techniques

Variable annuities (VAs) are increasingly becoming popular insurance products in many developed countries which provide guaranteed forms of income depending on the performance of the equity market. Insurance companies often hold large VA portfolios and the associate valuation of such portfolios is a very time-consuming task. There have been several studies focusing on inventing techniques aimed at reducing the computational time including the selection of representative VA contracts and the use of a metamodel to estimate the values of all contracts in the portfolio. In this thesis, LASSO regression is used to select a set of representative scenarios after the representative contracts are chosen, which in turn allows for the set of representative contracts to expand without significant increase in computational load. The proposed approach leads to a remarkable improvement in the computational efficiency and accuracy of the metamodel. Stochastic reserving and calculation of capital requirement require VA providers to calculate risk measures such as Value at Risk and Conditional Tail Expectation. An emulation framework is proposed to calculate these risk measures by building a neural network to model the net liability of a VA contract at some given scenario. The surrogate model is faster at estimating net liability than the exact calculation. Efficiency is improved thanks to faster computing of net liability for any contract at any scenario in the Monte Carlo simulation. This approach can also be used to select scenarios where the estimated portfolio liabilities are in the top quantile. The true liabilities of the portfolio at these top-quantile scenarios can be computed which can then be used to compute the risk measures. This results in a reduction in computational time because the Monte Carlo method is performed on only a fraction of the original scenarios. As an equity-linked insurance products, VA is exposed to significant market risks due to the underlying assets in the mutual funds that its contributions are invested in. To hedge against these market risks, insurers need to construct a hedging portfolio consisting of the underlying assets whose hedge positions can be determined by the Greeks of the portfolio such as the partial dollar Deltas. For a large portfolio, the calculation of the Greeks using Monte Carlo simulation is very slow, so a metamodeling approach can be used to estimate the Greeks. Assuming that the mutual funds of the VA insurers is a mixture of major market indices, there is likely a dependence between the partial dollar Deltas of the portfolio on the market indices. This dependent relationship can be incorporated into the model using multi-output regression approaches and the resulting improvement in the effectiveness of the metamodel or the lack thereof will be studied in the thesis

Abstract— This research evaluate the impact of business diversification of companies listed on HoSe from 2013 to 2017, the research has used balance panel data form of 145 listed enterprises. Business diversification is measured according to the Entropy index, measured by turnover in the Grade 2 subdivision and Level 4 subdivision according to Vietnam's industry standard. The results of the study showed that diversification would generally help improve financial efficiency, however, for those enterprises focusing on diversification outside the industry will reduce financial efficiency. In addition, the results of the study also showed that businesses increasing financial leverage for the purpose of expanding the left-sector business will be unstable, those businesses scaling up to strengthen the true diversification of businesses with experience will help increase their financial efficiency

Forbidden Patterns in Temporal Graphs Resulting from Encounters in a Corridor

In this paper, we study temporal graphs arising from mobility models where some agents move in a space and where edges appear each time two agents meet. We propose a rather natural one-dimensional model. If each pair of agents meets exactly once, we get a temporal clique where each possible edge appears exactly once. By ordering the edges according to meeting times, we get a subset of the temporal cliques. We introduce the first notion of of forbidden patterns in temporal graphs, which leads to a characterization of this class of graphs. We provide, thanks to classical combinatorial results, the number of such cliques for a given number of agents. We consider specific cases where some of the nodes are frozen, and again provide a characterization by forbidden patterns. We give a forbidden pattern when we allow multiple crossings between agents, and leave open the question of a characterization in this situation

    Get PDF
In recent years, foreign direct investment (FDI) has played an important role in Bac Ninh’s economic restructuring. Of all provinces, Bac Ninh has always been leading the way for attracting foreign investment in Vietnam. The goal of this article is to study the relationship between FDI and the structure of economy of Bac Ninh. We use Ordinary Least Squares regression (OLS) to analyze the influence of the province’s FDI on its economic restructuring over the period from 2009 to 2019. The result partly shows that the FDI has had a strong impact on Bac Ninh’s economic restructuring in both speed and quality. Through these findings, we propose several recommendations for the local authorities to continue to attract the FDI and reinforce the positive impacts of the FDI on the province’s economic restructuring in the future. Centrality of Buddhist Religiosity Scale: Adaptation and Validation of the Centrality of Religiosity Scale in a Buddhist Sample in Vietnam

    Get PDF
This paper describes an adaptation of the Centrality of Religiosity Scale to the Buddhist religious tradition (CBRS) and a validation in Vietnam. The sample included data from 421 Vietnamese Buddhists (300 females, 121 males), aged 17 to 71 years (M=35.03, SD=13.09). The results provided evidence for good psychometric properties of the short, intermediate, and long version: CBRS-5, CBRS-10, and CBRS-15 respectively. Specifically, exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses supported the measure’s original five-factor structure: intellect, ideology, public practice, private practice, and religious experience. Furthermore, the Centrality of Buddhist Religiosity has proven to be a stable psychological construct across the three versions of CBRS and was associated strongly with the Gordon Allport’s notion of the intrinsic religious orientation. The results also suggested that the Stefan Huber’s centrality of religiosity model can capture the Buddhist religiosity and that the CBRS can be used to measure the five theoretical defined core dimensions of religiosity in Buddhism
