Mosquitoes of Kudat: species composition and their medical importance(diptera: culicidae)

    Get PDF
A survey of mosquito fauna was done to determine the mosquito population and species composition in Kudat. Outdoor human landing catches (HLC) were done from April to June 2015. A total of 4,350 mosquitoes, representing eight genera and 37 species were collected. These include Aedes (Stegomyia), Aedimorphus, Anopheles, Armigeres, Culex, Mansonia, Phagomyia and Uranotaenia. Medical important species are specially noted and discussed. Armigeres (52.7%) was the most abundant, followed by Culex (31.9%), Aedes (9.4%), and Anopheles (4.3%). Armigeres kesseli and Ar. subabaltus were the two most common species. Armigeres annulipalpi and Phagomyia prominens are new records of Sabah

Saying the ‘F word … in the nicest possible way’: augmentative communication and discourses of disability

    Get PDF
This paper examines a case study of a severely physically disabled man, Ralph, in terms of his interaction with his carers. He communicates using various systems of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC, such as symbol boards and high-tech devices), the vocabulary for which has mostly been selected for him by others. The starting point of the paper is the assumption that disabled people have traditionally held a disempowered position in society (relative to non-disabled people), and the question asked is to what extent is Ralph further disempowered by the limited vocabulary available to him in his AAC systems, and in the way others interact with him. The paper draws on the work of Bourdieu, according to whom ‘Language is not only an instrument of communication or even of knowledge, but also an instrument of power’ (1977, 648). I consider the tensions between the drive towards the empowerment of disabled individuals, as exemplified by the provision of AAC, and opposition to allowing access to certain types of vocabulary (especially expletives such as ‘the F word’), unless it is expressed in ‘the nicest possible way’

Edge states in Open Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Chains

In this letter we report our results in investigating edge effects of open antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chains with spin magnitudes S=1/2,1,3/2,2S=1/2, 1,3/2,2 using the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method initiated by White. For integer spin chains, we find that edge states with spin magnitude Sedge=S/2S_{edge}=S/2 exist, in agreement with Valence-Bond-Solid model picture. For half-integer spin chains, we find that no edge states exist for S=1/2S=1/2 spin chain, but edge state exists in S=3/2S=3/2 spin chain with Sedge=1/2S_{edge}=1/2, in agreement with previous conjecture by Ng. Strong finite size effects associated with spin dimmerization in half-integer spin chains will also be discussed.Comment: 4 pages, RevTeX 3.0, 5 figures in a separate uuencoded postscript file. Image-Guided Ablative Therapies for Lung Tumors

    Get PDF
While the gold standard for early stage lung cancers is still surgical resection, many patients have comorbidities or suboptimal lung function making surgery unfavorable. At the same time, more and more small lung nodules are being incidentally discovered on computer tomography (CT), leading to the discovery of pre-malignant or very early stage lung cancers without regional spread, which could probably be eradicated without anatomical surgical resection. Various ablative energies and technologies are available on the market, including radiofrequency ablation, microwave ablation, cryoablation, and less commonly laser ablation and irreversible electroporation. For each technology, the mechanism of action, advantages, limitations, potential complications and evidence-based outcomes will be reviewed. Traditionally, these ablative therapies were done under CT guidance with percutaneous insertion of ablative probes. Recently, bronchoscopic ablation under ultrasound, CT, or electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy guidance is gaining popularity due to improved navigation precision, reduced pleural-based complications, and providing a true “wound-less” option

Landau Transport equations in slave-boson mean-field theory of t-J model

In this paper we generalize slave-boson mean-field theory for tJt-J model to the time-dependent regime, and derive transport equations for tJt-J model, both in the normal and superconducting states. By eliminating the boson and constraint fields exactly in the equations of motion we obtain a set of transport equations for fermions which have the same form as Landau transport equations for normal Fermi liquid and Fermi liquid superconductor, respectively with all Landau parameters explicity given. Our theory can be viewed as a refined version of U(1) Gauge theory where all lattice effects are retained and strong correlation effects are reflected as strong Fermi-liquid interactions in the transport equation. Some experimental consequences are discussed.Comment: 19 page

Adiabatic spin pumping through a quantum dot with a single orbital level

We investigate an adiabatic spin pumping through a quantum dot with a single orbital energy level under the Zeeman effect. Electron pumping is produced by two periodic time dependent parameters, a magnetic field and a difference of the dot-lead coupling between the left and right barriers of the dot. The maximum charge transfer per cycle is found to be ee, the unit charge in the absence of a localized moment in the dot. Pumped charge and spin are different, and spin pumping is possible without charge pumping in a certain situation. They are tunable by changing the minimum and maximum value of the magnetic field.Comment: RevTeX4, 5 pages, 3 figure
