    Investigation of the utilisation of social networks in e-learning at universities

    Over the years universities have considered to use social networks for learning purposes as most of their students now engage on them. However, questions on the impact social networks would have on learning and how they can be utilised further for more effective teaching and learning are still unclear. To solve these questions, an in-depth investigation has been conducted to understand the benefits and drawback of social network features available for students. The investigation results show that students strongly believe that social network features will help enhance learning and the key ways of utilising such features have been suggested

    Iterative detection of Diagonal Block Space Time Trellis Codes (DBSTTCs), Trellis Coded Modulation (TCM) and Reversible Variable Length Codes (RVLCs) is proposed. With the aid of efficient iterative decoding, the proposed scheme is capable of providing full transmit diversity and a near channel capacity performance. The performance of the proposed scheme was evaluated when communicating over uncorrelated Rayleigh fading channels. Explicitly, significant iteration gains were achieved by the proposed scheme, which was capable of performing within 2~dB from the channel capacity

    A Purely Symbol-Based Precoded and LDPC-Coded Iterative-Detection Assisted Sphere-Packing Modulated Space-Time Coding Scheme

    In this contribution, we propose a purely symbol-based LDPC-coded scheme based on a Space-Time Block Coding (STBC) signal construction method that combines orthogonal design with sphere packing, referred to here as (STBCSP). We demonstrate that useful performance improvements may be attained when sphere packing aided modulation is concatenated with non-binary LDPC especially, when performing purely symbol-based turbo detection by exchanging extrinsic information between the non-binary LDPC decoder and a rate-1 non-binary inner precoder. We also investigate the convergence behaviour of this symbol-based concatenated scheme with the aid of novel non-binary Extrinsic Information Transfer (EXIT) Charts. The proposed symbol-based turbo-detected STBC-SP scheme exhibits a 'turbo-cliff' at Eb/N0 = 5.0 dB and achieves an Eb/N0 gain of 19.2dB at a BER of 10-5 over Alamouti’s scheme

    Fabrication of Embedded Microvalve on PMMA Microfluidic Devices through Surface Functionalization

    The integration of a PDMS membrane within orthogonally placed PMMA microfluidic channels enables the pneumatic actuation of valves within bonded PMMA-PDMS-PMMA multilayer devices. Here, surface functionalization of PMMA substrates via acid catalyzed hydrolysis and air plasma corona treatment were investigated as possible techniques to permanently bond PMMA microfluidic channels to PDMS surfaces. FTIR and water contact angle analysis of functionalized PMMA substrates showed that air plasma corona treatment was most effective in inducing PMMA hydrophilicity. Subsequent fluidic tests showed that air plasma modified and bonded PMMA multilayer devices could withstand fluid pressure at an operational flow rate of 9 mircoliters/min. The pneumatic actuation of the embedded PDMS membrane was observed through optical microscopy and an electrical resistance based technique. PDMS membrane actuation occurred at pneumatic pressures of as low as 10kPa and complete valving occurred at 14kPa for 100 micrometers x 100 micrometers channel cross-sections.Comment: Submitted on behalf of EDA Publishing Association (http://irevues.inist.fr/handle/2042/16838

    A Turbo-Detection Aided Serially Concatenated MPEG-4/TCM Videophone Transceiver

    A Turbo-detection aided serially concatenated inner Trellis Coded Modulation (TCM) scheme is combined with four different outer codes, namely with a Reversible Variable Length Code (RVLC), a Non-Systematic Convolutional (NSC) code a Recursive Systematic Convolutional (RSC) code or a Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) code. These four outer constituent codes are comparatively studied in the context of an MPEG4 videophone transceiver. These serially concatenated schemes are also compared to a stand-alone LDPC coded MPEG4 videophone system at the same effective overall coding rate. The performance of the proposed schemes is evaluated when communicating over uncorrelated Rayleigh fading channels. It was found that the serially concatenated TCM-NSC scheme was the most attractive one in terms of coding gain and decoding complexity among all the schemes considered in the context of the MPEG4 videophone transceiver. By contrast, the serially concatenated TCM-RSC scheme was found to attain the highest iteration gain among the schemes considered

    Edge states in Open Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Chains

    In this letter we report our results in investigating edge effects of open antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chains with spin magnitudes S=1/2,1,3/2,2S=1/2, 1,3/2,2 using the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method initiated by White. For integer spin chains, we find that edge states with spin magnitude Sedge=S/2S_{edge}=S/2 exist, in agreement with Valence-Bond-Solid model picture. For half-integer spin chains, we find that no edge states exist for S=1/2S=1/2 spin chain, but edge state exists in S=3/2S=3/2 spin chain with Sedge=1/2S_{edge}=1/2, in agreement with previous conjecture by Ng.     Multiple scattering in random mechanical systems and diffusion approximation

    This paper is concerned with stochastic processes that model multiple (or iterated) scattering in classical mechanical systems of billiard type, defined below. From a given (deterministic) system of billiard type, a random process with transition probabilities operator P is introduced by assuming that some of the dynamical variables are random with prescribed probability distributions. Of particular interest are systems with weak scattering, which are associated to parametric families of operators P_h, depending on a geometric or mechanical parameter h, that approaches the identity as h goes to 0. It is shown that (P_h -I)/h converges for small h to a second order elliptic differential operator L on compactly supported functions and that the Markov chain process associated to P_h converges to a diffusion with infinitesimal generator L. Both P_h and L are selfadjoint (densely) defined on the space L2(H,{\eta}) of square-integrable functions over the (lower) half-space H in R^m, where {\eta} is a stationary measure. This measure's density is either (post-collision) Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution or Knudsen cosine law, and the random processes with infinitesimal generator L respectively correspond to what we call MB diffusion and (generalized) Legendre diffusion. Concrete examples of simple mechanical systems are given and illustrated by numerically simulating the random processes.Comment: 34 pages, 13 figure
