Plasma Lens Backgrounds at a Future Linear Collider
A 'plasma lens' might be used to enhance the luminosity of future linear
colliders. However, its utility for this purpose depends largely on the
potential backgrounds that may be induced by the insertion of such a device in
the interaction region of the detector. In this note we identify different
sources of such backgrounds, calculate their event rates from the elementary
interaction processes, and evaluate their effects on the major parts of a
hypothetical Next Linear Collider (NLC) detector. For plasma lens parameters
which give a factor of seven enhancement of the luminosity, and using the NLC
design for beam parameters as a reference, we find that the background yields
are fairly high, and require further study and improvements in detector

Human Genetics of Diabetic Retinopathy: Current Perspectives
Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a most severe microvascular complication which, if left unchecked, can be sight-threatening. With the global prevalence of diabetes being relentlessly projected to rise to 438 million subjects by 2030, DR will undoubtedly pose a major public health concern. Efforts to unravel the human genetics of DR have been undertaken using the candidate gene and linkage approaches, while GWAS efforts are still lacking. Aside from evidence for a few genes including aldose reductase and vascular endothelial growth factor, the genetics of DR remain poorly elucidated. Nevertheless, the promise of impactful scientific discoveries may be realized if concerted and collaborative efforts are mounted to identify the genes for DR. Harnessing new genetic technologies and resources such as the upcoming 1000 Genomes Project will help advance this field of research, and potentially lead to a rich harvest of insights into the biological mechanisms underlying this debilitating complication
Fault-tolerant quantum computation versus Gaussian noise
We study the robustness of a fault-tolerant quantum computer subject to
Gaussian non-Markovian quantum noise, and we show that scalable quantum
computation is possible if the noise power spectrum satisfies an appropriate
"threshold condition." Our condition is less sensitive to very-high-frequency
noise than previously derived threshold conditions for non-Markovian noise.Comment: 30 pages, 6 figure
Enhancing academic performance: The impact of active learning in mathematical economics
This paper explores the impact of active learning in mathematical economics
on students' academic performance (assessment scores). An experimental design
involving foundation students enrolled in the arts and business and management
foundation programmes in a British university located in Malaysia was adopted.
The control group underwent the more traditional lecture method with the
students taking on a passive role of listening to information disseminated by
the instructor. The treatment group, in contrast, was given minimum explanation
with the bulk of learning coming from students actively solving problems
presented in case studies based on real-world events. Results show that the 189
students in the treatment group performed significantly better than the 146

Topological spin excitations of Heisenberg antiferromagnets in two dimensions
In this paper we discuss the construction and the dynamics of vortex-like
topological spin excitations in the Schwinger-boson description of Heisenberg
antiferromagnets in two dimensions. The topological spin excitations are Dirac
fermions (with gap) when spin value is a half-integer. Experimental and

A new species of micro-mangrove crab of the genus Haberma Ng & Schubart, 2002 (Crustacea, Brachyura, Sesarmidae) from Hong Kong
The sesarmid genus Haberma Ng & Schubart, 2002, currently contains two species of small mangrove crabs with the first two pairs of the male ambulatory legs possessing characteristic subchelate dactyli and propodi. A new species, H. tingkok, is here described from Hong Kong. It can be separated from H. nanum Ng & Schubart, 2002 (from Singapore), and H. kamora Rahayu & Ng, 2005 (from Indonesian Papua) by its carapace shape, proportions of the ambulatory legs, and structures of the male pleon and male first gonopod.published_or_final_versio
Chiral symmetry breaking in a uniform external magnetic field II. Symmetry restoration at high temperatures and chemical potentials
Chiral symmetry is dynamically broken in quenched, ladder QED at weak gauge
couplings when an external magnetic field is present. In this paper, we show
that chiral symmetry is restored above a critical chemical potential and the
corresponding phase transition is of first order. In contrast, the chiral
symmetry restoration at high temperatures (and at zero chemical potential) is a
