Equipping construction and related engineering students for the market needs in mainland China

It is generally expected that the economic growth in China will persist in the foreseeable future. The economic development of China has given rise to an immense demand for infrastructure and construction facilities. While a number of these projects are complex and large in scale, construction and related engineering professionals who have experience on projects of these kinds should have a good opportunity to provide their services in China. To help promote exporting the services of construction and related engineering professionals, the tertiary education sector and professional institutions have a crucial role to play to equip their students. However, many construction and related engineering programs are tailored for the local markets. Broadening the international exposure of students should become the future direction of construction and related engineering programs. In this paper, the results of a survey conducted with students and professionals in Hong Kong are highlighted. The teaching and learning activities having been built into the construction and related engineering programs are identified. The burst gap is a peripheral temporal code for pitch perception that is shared across audition and touch
When tactile afferents were manipulated to fire in periodic bursts of spikes, we discovered that the perceived pitch corresponded to the inter-burst interval (burst gap) in a spike train, rather than the spike rate or burst periodicity as previously thought. Given that tactile frequency mechanisms have many analogies to audition, and indications that temporal frequency channels are linked across the two modalities, we investigated whether there is burst gap temporal encoding in the auditory system. To link this putative neural code to perception, human subjects (n = 13, 6 females) assessed pitch elicited by trains of temporally-structured acoustic pulses in psychophysical experiments. Each pulse was designed to excite a fixed population of cochlear neurons, precluding place of excitation cues, and to elicit desired temporal spike trains in activated afferents. We tested periodicities up to 150Â Hz using a variety of burst patterns and found striking deviations from periodicity-predicted pitch. Like the tactile system, the duration of the silent gap between successive bursts of neural activity best predicted perceived pitch, emphasising the role of peripheral temporal coding in shaping pitch. This suggests that temporal patterning of stimulus pulses in cochlear implant users might improve pitch perception
Auditory clicks elicit equivalent temporal frequency perception to tactile pulses: A cross-modal psychophysical study
Both hearing and touch are sensitive to the frequency of mechanical oscillations—sound waves and tactile vibrations, respectively. The mounting evidence of parallels in temporal frequency processing between the two sensory systems led us to directly address the question of perceptual frequency equivalence between touch and hearing using stimuli of simple and more complex temporal features. In a cross-modal psychophysical paradigm, subjects compared the perceived frequency of pulsatile mechanical vibrations to that elicited by pulsatile acoustic (click) trains, and vice versa. Non-invasive pulsatile stimulation designed to excite a fixed population of afferents was used to induce desired temporal spike trains at frequencies spanning flutter up to vibratory hum (>50 Hz). The cross-modal perceived frequency for regular test pulse trains of either modality was a close match to the presented stimulus physical frequency up to 100 Hz. We then tested whether the recently discovered “burst gap” temporal code for frequency, that is shared by the two senses, renders an equivalent cross-modal frequency perception. When subjects compared trains comprising pairs of pulses (bursts) in one modality against regular trains in the other, the cross-sensory equivalent perceptual frequency best corresponded to the silent interval between the successive bursts in both auditory and tactile test stimuli. These findings suggest that identical acoustic and vibrotactile pulse trains, regardless of pattern, elicit equivalent frequencies, and imply analogous temporal frequency computation strategies in both modalities. This perceptual correspondence raises the possibility of employing a cross-modal comparison as a robust standard to overcome the prevailing methodological limitations in psychophysical investigations and strongly encourages cross-modal approaches for transmitting sensory information such as translating pitch into a similar pattern of vibration on the skin
Exploring undergraduate students’ usage pattern of mobile apps for education
In recent years, with the general adoption of smartphones with computing power comparable to desktop computers, mobile applications (apps) have experienced a surge in popularity. However, there are few studies conducted about their educational use, especially in Southeast Asia. To close this research gap, this study aims to provide a current overview of mobile apps usage in higher education. Besides exploring the actual use of apps, the technology acceptance model was applied to examine (1) undergraduate students’ perceptions, which involve perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use, towards adopting mobile apps for educational purposes, and (2) their overall attitude toward such adoption. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were used to collect data from 150 undergraduate students in Business, Education, and Engineering in Hong Kong. The results show undergraduate students use mobile apps frequently to engage in learning activities related to their academic studies, with a particularly focus on communication and collaborative working, accessing academic resources, and checking a dictionary. However, the discrepancies in using apps for academic purposes are not significant between the three faculties. Meanwhile, perceived usefulness has a more positive impact on overall attitude compared with the impact of perceived ease of use. The investigation will help tertiary institutions, library service providers, and educators develop and assess strategic planning for education collaborating with mobile apps. This paper could also give app developers some suggestions for app design based on actual usage and students’ information needs.preprin
Effect of clinical and virological parameters on the level of neutralizing antibody against pandemic influenza A virus H1N1 2009
Background. Little is known about the antibody response in natural infection by the novel 2009 influenza A (H1N1) virus and its relationship with clinical and virological parameters. The relative lack of background neutralizing antibody against this novel virus provides a unique opportunity for understanding this issue. Methods. Case patients presenting with influenza-like illness who were positive for the pandemic H1 gene by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction were identified. The serum antibody response was assayed by neutralizing antibody titer (NAT) against the virus in 881 convalescent donors. We retrospectively analyzed clinical parameters and viral load. Results. Ninety percent of the 881 convalescent donors had seroprotective titer of 1:40 or greater. The geometric mean titer of donors with convalescent NAT measured between day 21 and 42 was 1:101.1. Multivariate analysis by ordinal regression showed that pneumonia (odds ratio, 3.39; 95% confidence interval, 1.49-9-7.61; P=.004) and sputum production (odds ratio, 1.75; 95% CI, 1.01-3.01; P=.046) were the 2 independent factors associated with a higher level of convalescent NAT. Being afebrile on influenza presentation was associated with subsequent poor NAT (<1:40) response (P = .04). A positive correlation between the nasopharyngeal viral load on presentation and the convalescent NAT was demonstrated (Spearman correlation r, 0.238; P = .026). Conclusions. About 10% of these convalescent patients do not have a seroprotective NAT and may benefit from vaccination to prevent reinfection. The convalescent NAT correlated well with the initial viral load and was independently associated with severity of the viral illness, including pneumonia. The findings provide both the clinical and virological markers for identifying potential convalescent plasma donors with high serum NAT, which can be used to produce hyperimmune intravenous immunoglobulin in a randomized treatment trial for patients with severe pandemic H1N1 infection. © 2010 by the Infectious Diseases Society of America. Human foot outperforms the hand in mechanical pain discrimination
Tactile discrimination has been extensively studied, but mechanical pain discrimination remains poorly characterised. Here, we measured the capacity for mechanical pain discrimination using a two-alternative forced choice paradigm, with force-calibrated indentation stimuli (Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments) applied to the hand and foot dorsa of healthy human volunteers. In order to characterise the relationship between peripheral nociceptor activity and pain perception, we recorded single-unit activity from myelinated (A) and unmyelinated (C) mechanosensitive nociceptors in the skin using microneurography. At the perceptual level, we found that the foot was better at discriminating noxious forces than the hand, which stands in contrast to that for innocuous force discrimination, where the hand performed better than the foot. This observation of superior mechanical pain discrimination on the foot compared to the hand could not be explained by the responsiveness of individual nociceptors. We found no significant difference in the discrimination performance of either the myelinated or unmyelinated class of nociceptors between skin regions. This suggests the possibility that other factors such as skin biophysics, receptor density or central mechanisms may underlie these regional differences
Wild type and mutant 2009 pandemic influenza A (H1N1) viruses cause more severe disease and higher mortality in pregnant BALB/c mice
Background: Pregnant women infected by the pandemic influenza A (H1N1) 2009 virus had more severe disease and higher mortality but its pathogenesis is still unclear. Principal Findings: We showed that higher mortality, more severe pneumonitis, higher pulmonary viral load, lower peripheral blood T lymphocytes and antibody responses, higher levels of proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines, and worse fetal development occurred in pregnant mice than non-pregnant controls infected by either wild type (clinical isolate) or mouse-adapted mutant virus with D222G substitution in hemagglutinin. These disease-associated changes and the lower respiratory tract involvement were worse in pregnant mice challenged by mutant virus. Though human placental origin JEG-3 cell line could be infected and proinflammatory cytokines or chemokines were elevated in amniotic fluid of some mice, no placental or fetal involvement by virus were detected by culture, real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction or histopathological changes. Dual immunofluorescent staining of viral nucleoprotein and type II alveolar cell marker SP-C protein suggested that the majority of infected alveolar epithelial cells were type II pneumocytes. Conclusion: The adverse effect of this pandemic virus on maternal and fetal outcome is largely related to the severe pulmonary disease and the indirect effect of inflammatory cytokine spillover into the systemic circulation. © 2010 Chan et al.published_or_final_versio
Epidemiology of Acute Myocarditis/Pericarditis in Hong Kong Adolescents Following Comirnaty Vaccination
BACKGROUND: Age-specific incidence of acute myocarditis/pericarditis in adolescents following Comirnaty vaccination in Asia is lacking. This study aimed to study the clinical characteristics and incidence of acute myocarditis/pericarditis among Hong Kong adolescents following Comirnaty vaccination. METHODS: This is a population cohort study in Hong Kong that monitored adverse events following immunization through a pharmacovigilance system for COVID-19 vaccines. All adolescents aged between 12 and 17 years following Comirnaty vaccination were monitored under the COVID-19 vaccine Adverse Event Response and Evaluation Programme. The clinical characteristics and overall incidence of acute myocarditis/pericarditis in adolescents following Comirnaty vaccination were analysed. RESULTS: Between 14 June 2021 and 4 September 2021, 33 Chinese adolescents who developed acute myocarditis/pericarditis following Comirnaty vaccination were identified. 29 (87.88%) were males and 4 (12.12%) were females, with a median age of 15.25 years. 27 (81.82%) and 6 (18.18%) cases developed acute myocarditis/pericarditis after receiving the second and first dose, respectively. All cases are mild and required only conservative management.The overall incidence of acute myocarditis/pericarditis was 18.52 (95% Confidence Interval [CI], 11.67-29.01) per 100,000 persons vaccinated. The incidence after the first and second doses were 3.37 (95%CI 1.12-9.51) and 21.22 (95%CI 13.78-32.28 per 100,000 persons vaccinated, respectively. Among male adolescents, the incidence after the first and second doses were 5.57 (95% CI 2.38-12.53) and 37.32 (95% CI 26.98-51.25) per 100,000 persons vaccinated. CONCLUSIONS: There is a significant increase in the risk of acute myocarditis/pericarditis following Comirnaty vaccination among Chinese male adolescents, especially after the second dose
