    The Percolation Signature of the Spin Glass Transition

    Magnetic ordering at low temperature for Ising ferromagnets manifests itself within the associated Fortuin-Kasteleyn (FK) random cluster representation as the occurrence of a single positive density percolating network. In this paper we investigate the percolation signature for Ising spin glass ordering -- both in short-range (EA) and infinite-range (SK) models -- within a two-replica FK representation and also within the different Chayes-Machta-Redner two-replica graphical representation. Based on numerical studies of the ±J\pm J EA model in three dimensions and on rigorous results for the SK model, we conclude that the spin glass transition corresponds to the appearance of {\it two} percolating clusters of {\it unequal} densities.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figure

    Metastable States in Spin Glasses and Disordered Ferromagnets

    We study analytically M-spin-flip stable states in disordered short-ranged Ising models (spin glasses and ferromagnets) in all dimensions and for all M. Our approach is primarily dynamical and is based on the convergence of a zero-temperature dynamical process with flips of lattice animals up to size M and starting from a deep quench, to a metastable limit. The results (rigorous and nonrigorous, in infinite and finite volumes) concern many aspects of metastable states: their numbers, basins of attraction, energy densities, overlaps, remanent magnetizations and relations to thermodynamic states. For example, we show that their overlap distribution is a delta-function at zero. We also define a dynamics for M=infinity, which provides a potential tool for investigating ground state structure.Comment: 34 pages (LaTeX); to appear in Physical Review

    Continuum theory of vacancy-mediated diffusion

    We present and solve a continuum theory of vacancy-mediated diffusion (as evidenced, for example, in the vacancy driven motion of tracers in crystals). Results are obtained for all spatial dimensions, and reveal the strongly non-gaussian nature of the tracer fluctuations. In integer dimensions, our results are in complete agreement with those from previous exact lattice calculations.     Glassiness and constrained dynamics of a short-range non-disordered spin model

    We study the low temperature dynamics of a two dimensional short-range spin system with uniform ferromagnetic interactions, which displays glassiness at low temperatures despite the absence of disorder or frustration. The model has a dual description in terms of free defects subject to dynamical constraints, and is an explicit realization of the ``hierarchically constrained dynamics'' scenario for glassy systems. We give a number of exact results for the statics of the model, and study in detail the dynamical behaviour of one-time and two-time quantities.     Prevention of childhood poisoning in the home: overview of systematic reviews and a systematic review of primary studies

    Unintentional poisoning is a significant child public health problem. This systematic overview of reviews, supplemented with a systematic review of recently published primary studies synthesizes evidence on non-legislative interventions to reduce childhood poisonings in the home with particular reference to interventions that could be implemented by Children's Centres in England or community health or social care services in other high income countries. Thirteen systematic reviews, two meta-analyses and 47 primary studies were identified. The interventions most commonly comprised education, provision of cupboard/drawer locks, and poison control centre (PCC) number stickers. Meta-analyses and primary studies provided evidence that interventions improved poison prevention practices. Twenty eight per cent of studies reporting safe medicine storage (OR from meta-analysis 1.57, 95% CI 1.22–2.02), 23% reporting safe storage of other products (OR from meta-analysis 1.63, 95% CI 1.22–2.17) and 46% reporting availability of PCC numbers (OR from meta-analysis 3.67, 95% CI 1.84–7.33) demonstrated significant effects favouring the intervention group. There was a lack of evidence that interventions reduced poisoning rates. Parents should be provided with poison prevention education, cupboard/drawer locks and emergency contact numbers to use in the event of a poisoning. Further research is required to determine whether improving poison prevention practices reduces poisoning rates

    Ultra-Slow Vacancy-Mediated Tracer Diffusion in Two Dimensions: The Einstein Relation Verified

    We study the dynamics of a charged tracer particle (TP) on a two-dimensional lattice all sites of which except one (a vacancy) are filled with identical neutral, hard-core particles. The particles move randomly by exchanging their positions with the vacancy, subject to the hard-core exclusion. In case when the charged TP experiences a bias due to external electric field E{\bf E}, (which favors its jumps in the preferential direction), we determine exactly the limiting probability distribution of the TP position in terms of appropriate scaling variables and the leading large-N (nn being the discrete time) behavior of the TP mean displacement Xˉn\bar{{\bf X}}_n; the latter is shown to obey an anomalous, logarithmic law Xˉn=α0(E)ln(n)|\bar{{\bf X}}_n| = \alpha_0(|{\bf E}|) \ln(n). On comparing our results with earlier predictions by Brummelhuis and Hilhorst (J. Stat. Phys. {\bf 53}, 249 (1988)) for the TP diffusivity DnD_n in the unbiased case, we infer that the Einstein relation μn=βDn\mu_n = \beta D_n between the TP diffusivity and the mobility μn=limE0(Xˉn/En)\mu_n = \lim_{|{\bf E}| \to 0}(|\bar{{\bf X}}_n|/| {\bf E} |n) holds in the leading in nn order, despite the fact that both DnD_n and μn\mu_n are not constant but vanish as nn \to \infty. We also generalize our approach to the situation with very small but finite vacancy concentration ρ\rho, in which case we find a ballistic-type law Xˉn=πα0(E)ρn|\bar{{\bf X}}_n| = \pi \alpha_0(|{\bf E}|) \rho n. We demonstrate that here, again, both DnD_n and μn\mu_n, calculated in the linear in ρ\rho approximation, do obey the Einstein relation.Comment: 25 pages, one figure, TeX, submitted to J. Stat. Phy

    A Percolation-Theoretic Approach to Spin Glass Phase Transitions

    The magnetically ordered, low temperature phase of Ising ferro- magnets is manifested within the associated Fortuin-Kasteleyn (FK) random cluster representation by the occurrence of a single positive density percolating cluster. In this paper, we review our recent work on the percolation signature for Ising spin glass ordering -- both in the short-range Edwards-Anderson (EA) and infinite-range Sherrington-Kirkpatrick (SK) models -- within a two-replica FK representation and also in the different Chayes-Machta-Redner two-replica graphical representation. Numerical studies of the ±J\pm J EA model in dimension three and rigorous results for the SK model are consistent in supporting the conclusion that the signature of spin-glass order in these models is the existence of a single percolating cluster of maximal density normally coexisting with a second percolating cluster of lower density.Comment: Based on lectures given at the 2007 Paris Summer School "Spin Glasses." 12 pages, 3 figure
