    Error estimation in the histogram Monte Carlo method

    We examine the sources of error in the histogram reweighting method for Monte Carlo data analysis. We demonstrate that, in addition to the standard statistical error which has been studied elsewhere, there are two other sources of error, one arising through correlations in the reweighted samples, and one arising from the finite range of energies sampled by a simulation of finite length. We demonstrate that while the former correction is usually negligible by comparison with statistical fluctuations, the latter may not be, and give criteria for judging the range of validity of histogram extrapolations based on the size of this latter correction.Comment: 7 pages including 3 postscript figures, typeset in LaTeX using the RevTeX macro packag

    Diffusion constant for the repton model of gel electrophoresis

    The repton model is a simple model of the "reptation" motion by which DNA diffuses through a gel during electrophoresis. In this paper we show that the model can be mapped onto a system consisting of two types of particles with hard-sphere interactions diffusing on a one-dimensional lattice. Using this mapping we formulate an efficient Monte Carlo algorithm for the model which allows us to simulate systems more than twice the size of those studied before. Our results confirm scaling hypotheses which have previously been put forward for the model. We also show how the particle version of the model can be used to construct a transfer matrix which allows us to solve exactly for the diffusion constant of small repton systems.     Strong-coupling behaviour in discrete Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equations

    We present a systematic discretization scheme for the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation, which correctly captures the strong-coupling properties of the continuum model. In particular we show that the scheme contains no finite-time singularities in contrast to conventional schemes. The implications of these results to i) previous numerical integration of the KPZ equation, and ii) the non-trivial diversity of universality classes for discrete models of `KPZ-type' are examined. The new scheme makes the strong-coupling physics of the KPZ equation more transparent than the original continuum version and allows the possibility of building new continuum models which may be easier to analyse in the strong-coupling regime.Comment: 21 pages, revtex, 2 figures, submitted to J.     We present an exact solution to an interface model representing the dynamics of a domain wall in a two-phase Ising system.     We investigate the connectedness properties of the set I+(f) of points where the iterates of an entire function f are unbounded. In particular, we show that I+(f) is connected whenever iterates of the minimum modulus of f tend to ∞. For a general transcendental entire function f, we show that I+(f)∪ \{\infty\} is always connected and that, if I+(f) is disconnected, then it has uncountably many components, infinitely many of which are unbounded

    The Universal Cut Function and Type II Metrics

    In analogy with classical electromagnetic theory, where one determines the total charge and both electric and magnetic multipole moments of a source from certain surface integrals of the asymptotic (or far) fields, it has been known for many years - from the work of Hermann Bondi - that energy and momentum of gravitational sources could be determined by similar integrals of the asymptotic Weyl tensor. Recently we observed that there were certain overlooked structures, {defined at future null infinity,} that allowed one to determine (or define) further properties of both electromagnetic and gravitating sources. These structures, families of {complex} `slices' or `cuts' of Penrose's null infinity, are referred to as Universal Cut Functions, (UCF). In particular, one can define from these structures a (complex) center of mass (and center of charge) and its equations of motion - with rather surprising consequences. It appears as if these asymptotic structures contain in their imaginary part, a well defined total spin-angular momentum of the source. We apply these ideas to the type II algebraically special metrics, both twisting and twist-free.Comment: 32 page

    Revisiting the project management knowledge framework: Rebalancing the framework to include transformation projects

    Purpose This paper highlights that extant project management (PM) bodies of knowledge have not fully addressed organisational transformation enabled by information systems projects. The purpose of this paper is to examine the transformation context in the PM disciplines. The authors argue that the execution-oriented PM bodies of knowledge are limited, as they place too much emphasis on the delivery outputs by the supplier rather than the achievement of beneficial outcomes by the project owner. Design/methodology/approach As a conceptual paper, this paper reviews extant PM bodies of knowledge, life cycle models, the context of organisational transformation and benefits realisation, and the distinction between a project owner’s and the project supplier’s capabilities. Findings A new PM knowledge framework is provided as an advanced research frame for future works by enhancing Peter Morris’ Management of Projects framework by employing the conceptual lens of Winch’s Three Domains of Project Organising model. Originality/value The advanced model emphasises the necessity of distinguishing a project owner’s and a supplier’s PM capability and knowledge to achieve successful IS-enabled organisational transformation. Through this effort to resolve the fragmentation and specialisation problems in PM disciplines, the model can be used as a theoretical groundwork for the advancement of PM research
