Designing an Instrument to Assess School-Based Peer-to-Peer Heroin and Opioid Prevention Program Outcomes

This study examines the issue of adolescent heroin and opioid use in New Hampshire and reviews interventions that positively change adolescent knowledge and perception of use. Prior studies indicate that peer-to-peer storytelling formats have a positive impact on adolescent knowledge and perception of substance use. We identified the Communities for Alcohol and Drug-free Youth’s (CADY) Alex’s Story, a school-based peer-to-peer storytelling prevention program addressing adolescent heroin and opioid use. To assist CADY in analyzing the programmatic impact of “Alex’s Story” on students, we designed a survey instrument to assess students’ understanding about substance use and addiction, and perception of harm associated with heroin and opioid use. We propose CADY use the designed instrument as a pre- and post-survey to measure students’ beliefs and perception of harm. It is hypothesized that by doing so, students who view Alex’s Story will have 1) an increased understanding about substance use and addiction, and 2) an increase in perception of harm related to heroin and opioid use when compared to students who do not view Alex’s Story. The implementation process for the survey instrument will be discussed

    Goyescas: A Performer's Guide

Abstract Opera in Spain developed slowly in comparison to its European neighbors in Italy, France, and Germany, whose traditions of opera were present beginning in the seventeenth century. Spain had a long tradition of spoken drama, many of which had robust musical components. The popularity of opera as a genre in other European countries perhaps inspired Spanish composers to create their own unique nationalistic style of opera in the seventeenth century: zarzuela. Zarzuela remained popular through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and eventually composers began to try their hand at writing opera in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. One of the most recognized composers of Spanish opera during this period was Enrique Granados (1867-1916), who wrote the 1915 opera Goyescas. Unlike opera in the standard language canon, there are limited resources available to performers as a guide to Spanish opera and pronunciation. In creating a performer’s guide for Enrique Granados’ opera Goyescas, I hope to offer an additional resource to singers for an opera that has no existing phonetic transcription and one English translation currently available. This guide includes an introduction to the work, which contains information about the composer, librettist, and the artist who inspired the work. It also contains a summary of the opera’s plot and cultural influences that inspired writing the work, such as Goya’s artistic influence, the piano suite it was modeled after, and the majo culture. The most substantial portion of this guide is an original English translation of Fernando Periquet Zuaznábar’s libretto. The translation is accompanied by a word for word International Phonetic Alphabet transcription

The Use of a Scoring System to Guide Thromboprophylaxis in a High-Risk Pregnant Population

    Get PDF
Guidelines for thromboprophylaxis in pregnancy are usually based upon clinical observations and expert opinion. For optimal impact, their use must be attended by consistency in the advice given to women. In this observational study, we evaluated the performance of a scoring system, used as a guide for clinicians administering dalteparin to pregnant women at increased risk of venous thromboembolism. The work included 47 women treated with dalteparin prior to adoption of the scoring system and 58 women treated with dalteparin after its adoption. The indication for thromboprophylaxis was recorded in each case together with details of the regimen employed, obstetric, and haematological outcomes. The main outcome measure was to determine whether consistency improved after adoption of the scoring system. We also recorded the occurrence of any new venous thromboembolism, haemorrhage, the use of regional anaesthesia during labour, evidence of allergy, and thrombocytopenia. We found that use of the scoring system improved the consistency of advice and increased the mean duration of thromboprophylaxis. None of the subjects suffered venous thromboembolism after assessment using the scoring system. There was no increase in obstetric or anaesthetic morbidity when dalteparin was given antenatally period and no evidence of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia

Assessment of child or young person with a possible eating disorder

    Get PDF
Assessing young people with possible eating disorders can be complex for a variety of reasons, including managing confidentiality and risk (for example, a young person not wanting their parent to be involved, or a parent presenting with concerns about their child), the young person or parent not being aware of the severity of the illness, and difficulty in knowing how questions can be sensitively phrased. This Practice Pointer will offer advice on building therapeutic relationships in consultation with a child or young person, and with their parent(s), what information to gather and how to do so sensitively, and how to discuss the role of the parent or carer in treatment. We recommend that it is read alongside the accompanying Clinical Update for detailed notes on examination, investigations, when to refer, and risk. The advice is based on expert experience. We use the female pronoun throughout as eating disorders are more prevalent in females, but it should be noted that they can and do also occur in males
