     Subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) is a devastating neurological insult, and is increasingly understood as a multi-system condition initiated in the central nervous system. Perioperative investigation of patients presenting for aneurysm surgery often includes a routine electrocardiogram (ECG) which frequently reveals an abnormality. We describe a patient who presented with SAH and who was found to have significant Q waves on the ECG suggestive of a trans-mural myocardial infarction, despite a negative medical history for such an event.     Cyber-Psychopathy: Examining the Relationship between Dark E-Personality and Online Misconduct

    Currently, there is a lack of research investigating how the unique structural conditions of cyberspace may influence the expression of ‘dark’ personality and the role of such e-personality in explaining instances of online misconduct. Using a theoretical framework of context-dependent personality, this study seeks to fill a gap in the literature by using self-report survey data to explore whether the internet may decrease, increase, or intensify the expression of psychopathy. Quantitative data analysis in this study shows that when controlling for social context, internet users exhibit higher levels of psychopathy online than offline, which is especially pronounced in male subsamples. Further multivariate models examine the role of this ‘cyber-psychopathy’ in understanding misconduct behaviours on the internet, such as cyber-stalking, trolling, flaming, and digital piracy. Results demonstrate that primary cyber-psychopathy is positively correlated with one’s level of acceptability toward online misconduct behaviours, while both primary and secondary cyber-psychopathy are positively associated with one’s tendency toward engaging in such transgressions. This study serves to highlight the potential impacts of heightened psychopathic personality online, while suggesting practical implications that emphasize the need to foster empathy and close psychological distance between internet users in online communities

    Defining Landscape Resistance Values in Least-Cost Connectivity Models for the Invasive Grey Squirrel: A Comparison of Approaches Using Expert-Opinion and Habitat Suitability Modelling

    Least-cost models are widely used to study the functional connectivity of habitat within a varied landscape matrix. A critical step in the process is identifying resistance values for each land cover based upon the facilitating or impeding impact on species movement. Ideally resistance values would be parameterised with empirical data, but due to a shortage of such information, expert-opinion is often used. However, the use of expert-opinion is seen as subjective, human-centric and unreliable. This study derived resistance values from grey squirrel habitat suitability models (HSM) in order to compare the utility and validity of this approach with more traditional, expert-led methods. Models were built and tested with MaxEnt, using squirrel presence records and a categorical land cover map for Cumbria, UK. Predictions on the likelihood of squirrel occurrence within each land cover type were inverted, providing resistance values which were used to parameterise a leastcost model. The resulting habitat networks were measured and compared to those derived from a least-cost model built with previously collated information from experts. The expert-derived and HSM-inferred least-cost networks differ in precision. The HSM-informed networks were smaller and more fragmented because of the higher resistance values attributed to most habitats. These results are discussed in relation to the applicability of both approaches for conservation and management objectives, providing guidance to researchers and practitioners attempting to apply and interpret a leastcost approach to mapping ecological networks.This project was funded by the Forestry Commission GB and the National School of Forestry at the University of Cumbria.     Using GPS telemetry to validate least-cost modeling of gray squirrel ( Sciurus carolinensis) movement within a fragmented landscape

    In Britain, the population of native red squirrels Sciurus vulgaris has suffered population declines and local extinctions. Interspecific resource competition and disease spread by the invasive gray squirrel Sciurus carolinensis are the main factors behind the decline. Gray squirrels have adapted to the British landscape so efficiently that they are widely distributed. Knowledge on how gray squirrels are using the landscape matrix and being able to predict their movements will aid management. This study is the first to use global positioning system (GPS) collars on wild gray squirrels to accurately record movements and land cover use within the landscape matrix. This data were used to validate Geographical Information System (GIS) least-cost model predictions of movements and provided much needed information on gray squirrel movement pathways and network use. Buffered least-cost paths and least-cost corridors provide predictions of the most probable movements through the landscape and are seen to perform better than the more expansive least-cost networks which include all possible movements. Applying the knowledge and methodologies gained to current gray squirrel expansion areas, such as Scotland and in Italy, will aid in the prediction of potential movement areas and therefore management of the invasive gray squirrel.     Stellar Dynamics at the Galactic Center with an Extremely Large Telescope

    We discuss experiments achievable via monitoring of stellar dynamics near the massive black hole at the Galactic center with a next generation, extremely large telescope (ELT). Given the likely observational capabilities of an ELT and current knowledge of the stellar environment at the Galactic center, we synthesize plausible samples of stellar orbits around the black hole. We use the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method to evaluate the constraints that orbital monitoring places on the matter content near the black hole. Results are expressed as functions of the number N of stars with detectable orbital motions and the astrometric precision dtheta and spectroscopic precision dv at which stellar proper motions and radial velocities are monitored. For N = 100, dtheta = 0.5 mas, and dv = 10 km/s -- a conservative estimate of the capabilities of a 30 meter telescope -- the extended matter distribution enclosed by the orbits will produce measurable deviations from Keplerian motion if >1000 Msun is enclosed within 0.01 pc. The black hole mass and distance to the Galactic center will be measured to better than ~0.1%. Lowest-order relativistic effects, such as the prograde precession, will be detectable if dtheta < 0.5 mas. Higher-order effects, including frame dragging due to black hole spin, requires dtheta < 0.05 mas, or the favorable discovery of a compact, highly eccentric orbit. Finally, we calculate the rate at which monitored stars undergo detectable nearby encounters with background stars. Such encounters probe the mass function of stellar remnants that accumulate near the black hole.     Cross-species EST alignments reveal novel and conserved alternative splicing events in legumes

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Although originally thought to be less frequent in plants than in animals, alternative splicing (AS) is now known to be widespread in plants. Here we report the characteristics of AS in legumes, one of the largest and most important plant families, based on EST alignments to the genome sequences of <it>Medicago truncatula </it>(<it>Mt</it>) and <it>Lotus japonicus </it>(<it>Lj</it>).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Based on cognate EST alignments alone, the observed frequency of alternatively spliced genes is lower in <it>Mt </it>(~10%, 1,107 genes) and <it>Lj </it>(~3%, 92 genes) than in <it>Arabidopsis </it>and rice (both around 20%). However, AS frequencies are comparable in all four species if EST levels are normalized. Intron retention is the most common form of AS in all four plant species (~50%), with slightly lower frequency in legumes compared to <it>Arabidopsis </it>and rice. This differs notably from vertebrates, where exon skipping is most common. To uncover additional AS events, we aligned ESTs from other legume species against the <it>Mt </it>genome sequence. In this way, 248 additional <it>Mt </it>genes were predicted to be alternatively spliced. We also identified 22 AS events completely conserved in two or more plant species.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This study extends the range of plant taxa shown to have high levels of AS, confirms the importance of intron retention in plants, and demonstrates the utility of using ESTs from related species in order to identify novel and conserved AS events. The results also indicate that the frequency of AS in plants is comparable to that observed in mammals. Finally, our results highlight the importance of normalizing EST levels when estimating the frequency of alternative splicing.</p

    Inter-sexual and inter-seasonal differences in the chemical signalling strategies of brown bears

    The brown bear (Ursus arctos) is a species which, due to its solitary, dominance hierarchy social system and large home range, is thought to rely heavily on chemical signals as a means of communication. Through camera traps orientated towards bear ‘rub trees’ over a two-year period, we assessed the proportional contribution of scent marking in different seasons by different age sex classes, and gained insights into the role of chemical signalling in maintaining social structure. We found, during the breeding season (June-July), that both adult males (n=38 P1 year (n=11 P=0.003) scent marked trees significantly more often than expected, whereas lone adult females (n=7) and subadults (n=3) marked less than expected. Outside of the breeding season (August-October), adult males (n=70) marked in an expected proportion, females with cubs (all ages) marked significantly more than expected (n=71 P<0.001), and lone adult females (n=11) and subadults (n=15) marked less than expected. During both the breeding season (n=7 P=0.026) and the fall (n=11 P<0.001), adult females marked trees significantly less than their occurrence on bear trails would expect, as did subadults during the breeding season (n=3 P=0.026) but not during the fall (n=15). Adult males marked at significantly high frequencies both during and outside of the breeding season, potentially to communicate dominance between males. Supported by the low frequency of scent marking by subadults. We observed a total avoidance of bear trails containing active rub trees by females with cubs <1 year during the breeding season, a possible counterstrategy to sexually selected infanticide due to the strong male bias in scent marking during the breeding season.
