A Novel Bocavirus Associated with Acute Gastroenteritis in Australian Children

Acute gastroenteritis (AGE) is a common illness affecting all age groups worldwide, causing an estimated three million deaths annually. Viruses such as rotavirus, adenovirus, and caliciviruses are a major cause of AGE, but in many patients a causal agent cannot be found despite extensive diagnostic testing. Proposing that novel viruses are the reason for this diagnostic gap, we used molecular screening to investigate a cluster of undiagnosed cases that were part of a larger case control study into the etiology of pediatric AGE. Degenerate oligonucleotide primed (DOP) PCR was used to non-specifically amplify viral DNA from fecal specimens. The amplified DNA was then cloned and sequenced for analysis. A novel virus was detected. Elucidation and analysis of the genome indicates it is a member of the Bocavirus genus of the Parvovirinae, 23% variant at the nucleotide level from its closest formally recognized relative, the Human Bocavirus (HBoV), and similar to the very recently proposed second species of Bocavirus (HBoV2). Fecal samples collected from case control pairs during 2001 for the AGE study were tested with a bocavirus-specific PCR, and HBoV2 (sequence confirmed) was detected in 32 of 186 cases with AGE (prevalence 17.2%) compared with only 15 controls (8.1%). In this same group of children, HBoV2 prevalence was exceeded only by rotavirus (39.2%) and astrovirus (21.5%) and was more prevalent than norovirus genogroup 2 (13.4%) and adenovirus (4.8%). In a univariate analysis of the matched pairs (McNemar's Test), the odds ratio for the association of AGE with HBoV2 infection was 2.6 (95% confidence interval 1.2–5.7); P = 0.007. During the course of this screening, a second novel bocavirus was detected which we have designated HBoV species 3 (HBoV3). The prevalence of HBoV3 was low (2.7%), and it was not associated with AGE. HBoV2 and HBoV3 are newly discovered bocaviruses, of which HBoV2 is the thirdmost-prevalent virus, after rotavirus and astrovirus, associated with pediatric AGE in this study

Verfahren zum Materialabtrag an einem bewegten Werkstueck

A process for the removal of material from a moving workpiece comprises a pulsed, high-energy, mainly focused (44) laser beam (22) which applies a predefined partial area (21) of the moving workpiece (20) with radiation in synchronism with the movement of the workpiece (20). During this operation, the deviation from its nominal value of a physical actual parameter of the workpeice (20), e.g. the unbalance, is detected in real time. The laser beam (22) is then trained in consecutive steps while applying a process gas mainly containing oxygen on this partial area (21) of the workpiece (20) until the physical actual value approaches the nominal value within a predefined tolerance range. Finally, a predefined number of said individual pulses of the laser is applied to the material removal area (60, 61, 62, 63) previously pulsed while feeding an inert gas. Thus, it is possible to obtain large material removal rates, whereby clean turn-down (61), turn-up (62) and edge zones (63) are obtained without ejections in the lateral area (64). By moving the workpiece (20) laterally along the axis of rotation (50), a flat material removal with a defined surface area (60) can be obtaine

(IPM

In a device for the continuous measurement of thickness of a material deposit produced on a bearer material by means of a coating machine, the deposit thickness on the measuring electrode (9) of a reference probe (50) is determined electrically by detecting the alternating current signal on the measuring electrode (9). The measuring electrode (9) is located between two metal housings (1) provided with inlet openings (4, 5) and is applied with opposite alternating currents shifted in phase by 180 degrees, the amplitudes of said alternating currents being adjusted at the start of measurement such that no signal occurs at the measuring electrode (9). The material deposit produced on the measuring electrode (9) located in the vicinity during the coating of a bearer material causes an offset of the electric field in the reference probe (50) and thus a measuring current in the measuring electrode (9) connected to an evaluation circuit

    BREM-STAR and TIGER-STAR: A small satellite concept for thermospheric-ionospheric 3D monitoring

    No full text
The BREM-STAR/TIGER-STAR satellite represents a dedicated low-cost concept for 3D monitoring of the thermosphere/ionosphere (T/I) to be conducted during an overlapping period of the ISS SOLAR mission. The primary goal is to execute precise radiometric measurements of the variable solar and terrestrial extreme ultraviolet/Ultraviolet (EUV) radiation and their impact on the T/I system. In combination with high-frequency measurements of the Earth's magnetic field over a period of two year the interaction of the solar wind with the upper atmospheric region will be investigated. Additional two-fequency GPS measurements allow to derive Total Electron Content (TEC). The TEC values will be correlated with the solar EUV/UV and solar wind inputs to improve the correction algorithms for a broad range of applications in the fields of space communication and navigation. In the frame of the TIGER program the development of more accurate models of the thermosphere/ionosphere shall be supported by this proposed project. The scientific payload and its implications on the satellite system are described
