    Financial Benefits of Florida Generic Orange Juice Marketing

    The benefits to Florida orange growers of generic orange juice advertising are assessed using additive, nonlinear, regional econometric models, measuring the impact of category and brand marketing efforts on category demand while controlling for pricing and various other factors. The study shows that generic marketing efforts increased orange juice category demand by 8.3 percent, resulting in increased orange prices and a benefit-to-cost ratio to Florida growers of 3.5 to 1.     Maintenance of Residential Rental Property: An Empirical Analysis

    The maintenance costs of 137 residential rental properties in northwestern South Carolina are analyzed. The results show that maintenance cost per square foot increases with property age, tenant turnover, certain amenities, and for higher-rent properties. Compared to other property types, apartments exhibit higher maintenance costs per square foot with larger complexes showing lower per square foot maintenance costs than smaller complexes. This cost economy suggests added value to rental housing for larger complexes. Owners of multiple properties are found to pay higher maintenance costs. Finally, there is no observed relationship between absentee ownership and the level of property maintenance.

    Modelling individual variability in cognitive development

    Investigating variability in reasoning tasks can provide insights into key issues in the study of cognitive development. These include the mechanisms that underlie developmental transitions, and the distinction between individual differences and developmental disorders. We explored the mechanistic basis of variability in two connectionist models of cognitive development, a model of the Piagetian balance scale task (McClelland, 1989) and a model of the Piagetian conservation task (Shultz, 1998). For the balance scale task, we began with a simple feed-forward connectionist model and training patterns based on McClelland (1989). We investigated computational parameters, problem encodings, and training environments that contributed to variability in development, both across groups and within individuals. We report on the parameters that affect the complexity of reasoning and the nature of ‘rule’ transitions exhibited by networks learning to reason about balance scale problems. For the conservation task, we took the task structure and problem encoding of Shultz (1998) as our base model. We examined the computational parameters, problem encodings, and training environments that contributed to variability in development, in particular examining the parameters that affected the emergence of abstraction.     A multitrace deformation of ABJM theory

    Motivated by the study of big crunch singularities in asymptotically AdS4AdS_4 spacetimes, we consider a marginal triple trace deformation of ABJM theory. The deformation corresponds to adding a potential which is unbounded below. In a 't Hooft large N limit, the beta function for the triple trace deformation vanishes, which is consistent with the near-boundary behavior of the bulk fields. At the next order in the 1/N expansion, the triple trace couplings exhibit non-trivial running, which we analyze explicitly in the limit of zero 't Hooft coupling, in which the model reduces to an O(N)×O(N)O(N)\times O(N) vector model with large N. In this limit, we establish the existence of a perturbative UV fixed point, and we comment on possible non-perturbative effects. We also show that the bulk analysis leading to big crunch singularities extends to the \Zbar_k orbifold models dual to ABJM theory.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures; v3.
