Exponentially Small Couplings between Twisted Fields of Orbifold String Theories

    Get PDF
We investigate the natural occurence of exponentially small couplings in effective field theories deduced from higher dimensional models. We calculate the coupling between twisted fields of the Z_3 Abelian orbifold compactification of the heterotic string. Due to the propagation of massive Kaluza-Klein modes between the fixed points of the orbifold, the massless twisted fields located at these singular points become weakly coupled. The resulting small couplings have an exponential dependence on the mass of the intermediate states and the distance between the fixed points.Comment: 21 pages, 4 figure

On manifolds with multiple lens space filings

An irreducible 3--manifold with torus boundary either is a Seifert fibered space or admits at most three lens space fillings according to the Cyclic Surgery Theorem. We examine the sharpness of this theorem by classifying the non-hyperbolic manifolds with more than one lens space filling, classifying the hyperbolic manifolds obtained by filling of the Minimally Twisted 5 Chain complement that have three lens space fillings, showing that the doubly primitive knots in S3S^3 and S1×S2S^1 \times S^2 have no unexpected extra lens space surgery, and showing that the Figure Eight Knot Sister Manifold is the only non-Seifert fibered manifold with a properly embedded essential once-punctured torus and three lens space fillings.Comment: 30 pages, 13 figure

Masking of errors in transmission of VAPC-coded speech

    Get PDF
A subjective evaluation is provided of the bit error sensitivity of the message elements of a Vector Adaptive Predictive (VAPC) speech coder, along with an indication of the amenability of these elements to a popular error masking strategy (cross frame hold over). As expected, a wide range of bit error sensitivity was observed. The most sensitive message components were the short term spectral information and the most significant bits of the pitch and gain indices. The cross frame hold over strategy was found to be useful for pitch and gain information, but it was not beneficial for the spectral information unless severe corruption had occurred

An Investigation of Crash Avoidance in a Complex System

Complex systems can exhibit unexpected large changes, e.g. a crash in a financial market. We examine the large endogenous changes arising within a non-trivial generalization of the Minority Game: the Grand Canonical Minority Game (GCMG). Using a Markov Chain description, we study the many possible paths the system may take. This 'many-worlds' view not only allows us to predict the start and end of a crash in this system, but also to investigate how such a crash may be avoided. We find that the system can be 'immunized' against large changes: by inducing small changes today, much larger changes in the future can be prevented.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures.
