Brief report: self-compassion, physical health and the mediating role of health-promoting behaviours

    Get PDF
To test the hypothesis that self-compassion predicts better physical health and that this is partially mediated through health-promoting behaviours, 147 adults completed self-report measures of self-compassion, health-promoting behaviours and physical health. Self-compassion and health-promoting behaviours were negatively associated with physical symptom scores. Self-compassion was positively associated with health-promoting behaviours. A bootstrapped mediation model confirmed a significant direct effect of self-compassion on physical health through health-promoting behaviours (R(2) = 0.13, b = -8.98, p = 0.015), which was partially mediated through health-promoting behaviours (R(2) = 0.06, b = -3.16, 95 per cent confidence interval [-6.78, -0.86]). Findings underscore the potential health-promoting benefits of self-compassion.non

EFFICIENCY MEASURES USING THE RAY-HOMOTHETIC FUNCTION: A MULTIPERIOD ANALYSIS

    Get PDF
Recent investigations have provided mixed assessments of farm firm efficiency. This analysis examined the efficiency of a homogeneous sample of central Illinois grain farms over a six-year period. A best-practice frontier was constructed using the ray-homothetic function, which allowed optimal farm output to vary with factor intensity. Efficiency measures were found to increase with temporal aggregation. The ray-homothetic approach was found to attribute high scale inefficiencies to larger sample farms in cases where the factor shares did not vary appreciably across farms. The findings suggest that policy recommendations regarding farm efficiency must be made with care.Agribusiness,

Spatial sound for computer games and virtual reality

    Get PDF
In this chapter, we discuss spatial sound within the context of Virtual Reality and other synthetic environments such as computer games. We review current audio technologies, sound constraints within immersive multi-modal spaces, and future trends. The review process takes into consideration the wide-varying levels of audio sophistication in the gaming and VR industries, ranging from standard stereo output to Head Related Transfer Function implementation. The level of sophistication is determined mostly by hardware/system constraints (such as mobile devices or network limitations), however audio practitioners are developing novel and diverse methods to overcome many of these challenges. No matter what approach is employed, the primary objectives are very similar—the enhancement of the virtual scene and the enrichment of the user experience. We discuss how successful various audio technologies are in achieving these objectives, how they fall short, and how they are aligned to overcome these shortfalls in future implementations

Bursicon, Metamorphosis and Development of Resilin in the Fruit Fly

    Get PDF
Hovering flight is the primary form of locomotion in the numerous and diverse forms of winged insects. A specialized elastic protein, Resilin, contributes to flight mechanics in most described insect orders. Although many studies have inferred functions of Resilin in insect flight, we report the first direct evidence that Resilin is a necessary component in flight mechanics of the fruit fly. We have successfully knocked down Resilin synthesis with RNAi and have generated a new resilin deletion mutant Df(2R)anhedral. By disturbing the formation of the Resilin rich tergopleural tendon, we have shown that Resilin functions in wing control. We also use RNAi based techniques to show that the Bursicon hormonal pathway which governs final stages of metamorphosis in flies does not play a necessary role in Resilin maturation. Bursicon may, via one of its subunits (Burs), play a previously unknown role in eclosion behaviour of D. melanogaster

Permanently Beta: Responsive Organization in the Internet Era

    Get PDF
How has the Internet influenced economic organization? Many approach this question strictly economically by examining the productivity gains from particular technological advances or the roles that dot-coms and other internet-based organizations play in the economy. The authors approach this question differently. They move away from a macro-social analysis and consider the co-evolution of new technologies and organizational forms. In other words, how has the process of technological change in the Internet era influenced the way we organize economic activities? In this paper, they discuss how information technologies foster the emergent design and user-driven design of websites and other online media, as well as products and organizations off-line. We also consider how to mitigate the social costs of these changes

Jointly they edit: examining the impact of community identification on political interaction in Wikipedia

    Get PDF
In their 2005 study, Adamic and Glance coined the memorable phrase "divided they blog", referring to a trend of cyberbalkanization in the political blogosphere, with liberal and conservative blogs tending to link to other blogs with a similar political slant, and not to one another. As political discussion and activity increasingly moves online, the power of framing political discourses is shifting from mass media to social media. Continued examination of political interactions online is critical, and we extend this line of research by examining the activities of political users within the Wikipedia community. First, we examined how users in Wikipedia choose to display (or not to display) their political affiliation. Next, we more closely examined the patterns of cross-party interaction and community participation among those users proclaiming a political affiliation. In contrast to previous analyses of other social media, we did not find strong trends indicating a preference to interact with members of the same political party within the Wikipedia community. Our results indicate that users who proclaim their political affiliation within the community tend to proclaim their identity as a "Wikipedian" even more loudly. It seems that the shared identity of "being Wikipedian" may be strong enough to triumph over other potentially divisive facets of personal identity, such as political affiliation.Comment: 33 pages, 5 figure
