Electrode processes in electrolysis of zirconium at production of plastic zirconium for nuclear energy
The analysis of the conditions for industrial production of zirconium by the electrolysis of a melt of potassium fluorozirconate and potassium chloride in a sealed electrolyzer with a current load of 10 kA was carried out. It is shown that the developed method of preparing the raw material without the use of chlorine, with electrolytic reduction of zirconium provides the production of a metal of nuclear purity, with a hafnium content of less than 0.005 wt.% polyvalent ion electrodes. The current output of zirconium is 55...60%, which may be due to reversible oxidation-reduction on the electrodes of polyvalent ions. The low resistance of the graphite anode is due to both chemical interaction with the released fluorine and chlorine, and its mechanical destruction. Long-range attraction between particles in dusty plasma and partial surface tension of dusty phase boundary
Effective potential of a charged dusty particle moving in homogeneous plasma
has a negative part that provides attraction between similarly charged dusty
particles. A depth of this potential well is great enough to ensure both
stability of crystal structure of dusty plasma and sizable value of surface
tension of a boundary surface of dusty region. The latter depends on the
orientation of the surface relative to the counter-ion flow, namely, it is
maximal and positive for the surface normal to the flow and minimal and
negative for the surface along the flow. For the most cases of dusty plasma in
a gas discharge, a value of the first of them is more than sufficient to ensure
stability of lenticular dusty phase void oriented across the counter-ion flow.Comment: LATEX, REVTEX4, 7 pages, 6 figure
Influence of electrolyte on the zirconium electrolysis process for nuclear power engineering
The work presents the results of a study of the cathode and anode processes of zirconium electrolysis from molten electrolytes K₂ZrF₆–KCl–KF–KI and ZrF₄–KCl–KF. It is shown that the introduction of iodine compounds into the electrolyte prevents the discharge of potassium chloride, reduces the release of chlorine on the anode, the consumption of electricity, reagents and increases the current efficiency and process productivity. The replacement of K₂ZrF₆ obtained by fractional crystallization on ZrF₄ salt with a hafnium content of less than 0.01% obtained after the extraction process reduces the consumption of Zr salt, eliminates the accumulation of KF in the electrolyte, reduces the consumption of hydrofluoric acid and potassium carbonate, and increases the concentration of zirconium in the electrolyte, increases current efficiency and improves powder quality to ASTM hafnium requirements.
The mammalian gene function resource: The International Knockout Mouse Consortium
In 2007, the International Knockout Mouse Consortium (IKMC) made the ambitious promise to generate mutations in virtually every protein-coding gene of the mouse genome in a concerted worldwide action. Now, 5 years later, the IKMC members have developed highthroughput gene trapping and, in particular, gene-targeting pipelines and generated more than 17,400 mutant murine embryonic stem (ES) cell clones and more than 1,700 mutant mouse strains, most of them conditional. A common IKMC web portal (www.knockoutmouse.org) has been established, allowing easy access to this unparalleled biological resource. The IKMC materials considerably enhance functional gene annotation of the mammalian genome and will have a major impact on future biomedical research
The Theory of Brown Dwarfs and Extrasolar Giant Planets
Straddling the traditional realms of the planets and the stars, objects below
the edge of the main sequence have such unique properties, and are being
discovered in such quantities, that one can rightly claim that a new field at
the interface of planetary science and and astronomy is being born. In this
review, we explore the essential elements of the theory of brown dwarfs and
giant planets, as well as of the new spectroscopic classes L and T. To this
end, we describe their evolution, spectra, atmospheric compositions, chemistry,
physics, and nuclear phases and explain the basic systematics of
substellar-mass objects across three orders of magnitude in both mass and age
and a factor of 30 in effective temperature. Moreover, we discuss the
distinctive features of those extrasolar giant planets that are irradiated by a
central primary, in particular their reflection spectra, albedos, and transits.
Aspects of the latest theory of Jupiter and Saturn are also presented.
Throughout, we highlight the effects of condensates, clouds, molecular
abundances, and molecular/atomic opacities in brown dwarf and giant planet
atmospheres and summarize the resulting spectral diagnostics. Where possible,
the theory is put in its current observational context.Comment: 67 pages (including 36 figures), RMP RevTeX LaTeX, accepted for

Investigation of the metrological reliability of manometers
The advantages and disadvantages of manometers with a resilient sensing element. A complete factorial experiment to determine the dependence of the metrological reliability of manometers. To investigate the effect of the level and duration of measured pressure overload full factorial experiment was performed. As the objects of experiment were new faultless manometers of the lower price segment of the most popular producers in Russia — «WIKA» (Germany), «Rosma (Russia) and «Meter» (Russia). Since all investigated manometers have a similar structure, but different materials and sensor gear, the experimental results may indicate a low quality of measuring system materials, used for the lower price category manometers. The methods of manometers protection against overloads
Inductively-coupled dusty plasma
The results of experimental research of behaviour of microparticles in plasma of inductive radiofrequency discharge are presented. The experiments were performed in inert gases with monodisperse and polydisperse particles. The discharge was initiated by radio-frequency power supply at 27 and 100 MHz. There are presented different kinds of dusty particle structures and conditions of their formation
