The possibility of substituting the usage of a radioactive a-source to improve the characteristics of the gas surge arrester is considered in this paper. The solution to this problem is sought in the engineering of the characteristics by applying different electrode materials and varying electrode surface topography. Materials that differ in the output work value were examined. The electrode surface topographies were either polished, or with engraved regular spikes, or with polished cavities. The paper is mostly experimental in nature. The experiments were performed under well-controlled laboratory conditions. The measurement uncertainty of the experimental procedure was satisfactory. Experimental results were processed by sophisticated statistical methods of low statistical unreliability. The obtained results show that it is possible to avoid the installation of a radioactive source in the gas surge arresters and how it should be done. In this way, a possible contamination of the natural environment with extremely dangerous alpha - radioactive sources would be avoided

The influence of the GM tube insulation parameters on the GM counter characteristics

The paper presents the results of testing the Geiger-Muller chamber cathode radii on the GM counters characteristics. The influence of the cathode radius is tested on: 1 - the GM counter characteristic; 2 - the length and plateau slope; and 3 - the GM counter chamber lifetime. The influence of small amounts of electronegative gas in the GM chamber working gas on the observed characteristics was also analyzed. The obtained results differ drastically from the results of similar tests presented in previously published papers on similar topics. This result is explained by the fact that the law of similarity for gas emissions was taken into consideration when making the tested tubes (i.e., the mean free path length of the electron was treated as a geometric parameter). In that way, the relevant results for the application of GM counters in practice were obtained. The result obtained with a small percentage of electronegative gas in the three-component mixture of gases noble gas + quenching gas + electronegative gas confirms the positive synergistic effect of the electronegative gas addition. This result contradicts the general view that GM chamber working gas must not contain electronegative gas

Efficient replacement of the radioactive sources in the gas-filled surge arresters construction for the insulation co-ordination at the low voltage level

The possibility of the classical response rate engineering and the long-term deconditioning of the gas-filled surge arresters is considered in this paper. The obtained results are compared with the same results obtained with the gas-filled surge arrester with application of an alpha radioactive source. The work is of an experimental nature. Experiments were performed on the multipurpose gas-filled surge arrester model under well-controlled conditions. The measurement uncertainty of the experimental procedure was less than 8 %. The results were processed by statistical data processing software. To draw impulse characteristics, the law of constancy of surfaces below the impulse voltage in the volt-second area, was used

A Three-electrode gas arrester for low voltage isolation coordination

This work aims is to design, fabricate and test a gas surge arrester with optimum characteristics based on testing the influence of all parameters that affect the characteristics of gas surge arresters for the coordination of low voltage isolation. After extensive research on the surge arrester model and reviewing all available literature, a three-electrode prototype surge arrester was made. The prototype gas used was a mixture of 0.8 He + 0.2 SF6 and the working point was set to the right of Pashen's minimum. Examination of thus constructed prototype and three commercial surge arresters of the same nominal voltage has shown that the surge arrester model was better in every respect. It should be noted that using the developed model, gas arresters with radioactive charging can be discarded, which is important for environmental reasons. The obtained results are very important in power engineering since the operation and control of the operation of power circuits, which are the source of overvoltage which are performed by electronic circuits

Influence Of Radiation On The Stability Of Electrical Filters Characteristics As Components For Overvoltage Protection

The paper represents the results of testing the effect of neutron and gamma radiation of radioactive 60 Co on electrical filters. Neutron and gamma radiation was chosen because of its conductivity. The analysis of the standard structure of the electric filter found that neutron and gamma radiation can affect the value of the capacitance as the most important component of the filter. The presented results are a contribution to the wider research of the radiation resistance of elements for the coordination of insulation at the low-voltage level. The experiments were performed on commercial capacitors that are installed in electric filters. Measurements were made with professional equipment under well-controlled laboratory conditions. The combined measurement uncertainty of the experimental procedure was less than 5 %
